Octuplets mom had option to selectively abort

BELLFLOWER - The woman who gave birth to octuplets this week rejected an option to abort some of the fetuses, one of her physicians said Thursday. The mother also released a statement saying she was "ecstatic."

The woman, whose identity remains a secret, was already pregnant when she came to Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Medical Center, where the eight babies were born Monday, said Dr. Harold Henry, chief of maternal and fetal medicine.

"Our patient was counseled about her options for the pregnancy," Henry told a news conference. "The options were to continue pregnancy or to selectively abort. The patient chose to continue the pregnancy."

No information on how the octuplets were conceived has been released, but uninvolved experts believe the mother was most likely on fertility treatment.

Dr. Karen Maples, chief of the department of obstetrics and gynecology, read a statement she said were the mother's own words and was signed "The Family."

"We understand that you are all curious about the arrival of the octuplets and we appreciate your respect for our family's privacy. Please know, in our own time, we will share additional details about this miraculous experience," it said.

"The babies continue to grow strong everyday and make good progress. My family and I are ecstatic about all of their arrivals. Needless to say the eighth was a surprise to us all, but a blessing as well," the statement said.

Dr. Mandhir Gupta said seven of the babies were breathing room air without assistance. One, Baby G, was still receiving oxygen through a tube in his nose.

Seven of the infants were being tube-fed donated breast milk. Baby E, a boy, was expected to begin feedings on Friday.

All babies continued to receive an intravenous nutritional combination.
