The Targeting Of Political Dissent By The IRS Represents A Clear And Present Danger To The American Republic

    May 20, 2014

There seems to be a belief among some true believers on the Left that the executive branch is pretty much sewn up for the foreseeable future. Ms. Clinton will waltz in on the heels Mr. Obama and take over the expansion of the state, the expansion of the “progressive” state, in 3 years time. Though Congress my not be owned by the Dems, the White House the progressives are positive will be for a long time, and so the tools of the executive branch should be employed in a partisan and purely political way.
Of these tools the IRS is perhaps the most powerful. (Within the borders of the United States.) The power to tax, as Daniel Webster said, is the power to destroy. And it was destruction which was on the mind of high level partisans and at the Internal Revenue Service between 2010 and 2012. Some within areas of the executive branch, and it appears within Congress, saw the Tea Party as a threat. As such they unleashed the tax dogs.
This was a supremely arrogant, and frankly stupid thing to do. By doing this the Dems created a terrible precedent. Their secure belief that the IRS will be in their hands forever clouded their understanding of one very key political truth, that payback is a bitch.
Right now the bet is the IRS scandal will blow over and that the establishment GOP may even quietly approve of the IRS targeting of the Tea Party. There is no one under more threat from the Tea Party than the GOP establishment. Indeed veteran pollster Pat Cadell even said explicitly in February that he thought that GOP leadership is perfectly fine with the insurgent groups being targeted by the IRS.

By so obviously politicizing the IRS the administration has opened a new and dangerous front in American politics. The targeting on a wide scale of political dissent, particularly of those who are enamored with the Constitution of all things shows how far we have fallen as a Republic.
There is no spinning what happened. The IRS scandal is a shameful chapter in the history of this country, and it just invites viciousness from those who were targeted. The Republicans whether establishment or otherwise will likely be tempted to even the score and then some.
Like so many things in our culture the bar has been lowered yet again.
It’s pretty hard to be a “Shining City on the Hill” when we are mired in the muck of banana republic politics.
    (From The National Review)
The most important question that must be answered in this matter does not involve the misbehavior of IRS officials and Democratic officeholders, though those are important. Nor is it the question of free speech, vital and fundamental as that is. The question here is nothing less than the legitimacy of the United States government. When law-enforcement agencies and federal regulators with extraordinary coercive powers are subordinated to political interests rather than their official obligations — to the Party rather than to the law — then the law itself becomes meaningless, and the delicate constitutional order we have enjoyed for more than two centuries is reduced to a brutal might-makes-right proposition. Elected officials and public servants of both parties take an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States and to faithfully discharge the duties of their office. That oath is now being tested. The IRS investigation is no mere partisan scandal, but a moral challenge for the men and women who compose the government of this country. Whether they are sufficient to meet that challenge is far from obvious, but the evidence so far is not encouraging.
