    With the overwhelming media attention being afforded to the union protests in Wisconsin right now, some may not know that on Wednesday the Ohio state Senate passed a bill that repeals their 1983 collective bargaining law and replaces it with a merit-pay system. The Public Employee Collective Bargaining Law (Senate Bill 5) was passed by a slim vote of 17-16, with six Republicans joining all ten Democrats voting “no.â€

    Any repeal of any collective bargaining rights is an incremental step to abolishing unions. If they try to do it all in one step, they get way more resistance than if they try to do it in baby steps. This is the strategy corporations have used over the decades to destroy worker rights. They section out a small portion of workers and a small portion of rights or benefits. They abolish that and then they move to the next step.

    And merit based pay if very good news also. I'm not bashing all public workers by any means, but they should face job termination the same as the rest of us if they do not do what they are paid to do.

    Public workers already face termination if they do not do what they are paid to do.
