DISD schools for Sotomayor, Obama to be considered

Proposals to name DISD schools for Sotomayor, Obama to be considered
    3:30 PM Thu, Aug 06, 2009 | Permalink

On next week's board briefing agenda is a proposal to name new schools in the South Dallas area for President Barack H. Obama and new Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor.

Trustees won't vote on the matter until Aug. 27, but could have discussions on the proposals next Thursday since the items are on the briefing agenda.

The replacement school for Billy Earl Dade Middle Learning Center would be named for Obama. And in a related agenda item up for approval, the library at the Obama school would be named for his wife, Michelle Obama.

The replacement school for O.M. Roberts Elementary School would be named for Sotomayor. But before the naming can be approved, the board will have to rescind its approval for the school to be named after Ray Hunt Sr. For whatever reason, Hunt didn't want the school named for him. The board document says, "This name is now being rescinded at the request of the recipient and the name now submitted to the Board for approval is Sonia Sotomayor."

Sotomayor was confirmed as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice today. Obama is the nation's first black president.

Trustee Ron Price said he recommended the names for the schools, which are in his area.

"I want my kids in my district to be able to go to a school named after somebody they actually know something about," Price said. "These aspiring kids need to have role models that they can see and not only read about."

Ron Price would like to name a DISD campus for the president as well.

Hadn't intended to look at the Dallas Independent School District board's meeting agendas till next week -- (edit), summer break went by in a hurry -- but Tawnell Hobbs gives us an early warning: Trustee Ron Price would like to rename some schools for President Barack Obama and your newest Supreme Court justice, Sonia Sotomayor. Should come up for a vote in, oh, three weeks. Three long weeks.

See for yourself on the district's Web site: O.M. Roberts Elementary was supposed to be named for Ray Hunt Sr., but he took a pass per this briefing document. So, instead, Price went with Sotomayor. Meanwhile, the South Dallas campus that will replace the Billy Earl Dade Middle Learning Center would be named for the president; the library, for Michelle Obama. All I can say is: Thank God there's already a DISD school named for César Chávez.

Precedent for naming school for current president set under Bush 43?

Stockton School Named for George W. Bush Opens Today

    Gannett Co., Inc

Cities are full of schools named Washington, Adams and Jefferson. In Stockton, however, a school has been named for a current president, apparently for the first time ever.

G.W. Bush school is the first to be built with funds from an $80 million bond approved by voters in 2000. The $13 million campus is situated on 12 acres near the Stockton Auto Mall. It will be home to 850 students. ---

It isn't likely students will become familiar with their school's namesake any time soon, at least not in person. Despite repeated invitations, the president has sent word that his schedule does not allow for a visit to the school.

Give me a break! Just when I think DISD couldn't get any worse, they go and do this. First, Obama is a terrible president and hasn't even been in office for a year, and they already are trying to name a school after him? Second, Sotomayor hasn't even taken her seat yet!

Good ole DISD naming schools ONLY based on race, and not merit.

Just curious, are there any school named for the first black supreme court justice Thurgood Marshall? How about the first woman Sandra Day O'Connor?

While I have no problem with schools being named after presidents, president's wives are another matter.
