Textile Company May Shut Down All Plants In Three States

Now someone tell me how we can hoave a low unemployment rate with Americans losing jobs left and right due to CAFTA, NAFTA, etc.?
I do not believe the numbers. It goes against all logic. Avondale Mills has been in Alabama for years on end.

Textile Company May Shut Down All Plants In Three States

GRANNITEVILLE, S.C. -- Officials at Avondale Mills, still reeling from a train wreck and chlorine spill last year at a South Carolina factory, said the textile company may shut down all of its plants in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.

Avondale Mills has 4,000 employees and 18 manufacturing plants in the three states, including six plants in Alabama -- three in Sylacauga and mills in Pell City, Alexander City and Rockford.

Officials said the closure of all the plants could come as early as July 25.

Stephen Felker Jr., the manager of corporate development for the company, said the Avondale Mills continues to look into a possible sale or restructuring.

Felker said the company's finances are suffering from effects of international trade and the aftermath of the train wreck in January 2005 that killed nine people, including six Avondale Mills employees in Graniteville, S.C.

That plant that got shut down because of the train wreck did cost them money, but you would have thought they could have moved operations to help cut their losses. In addition, most companies have are insured to cover the losses.

This is NAFATA and CAFTA at its best. Be sure to thank your elected leaders for this.

Unemployment numbers are based on the number of people who are getting unemployment, not on how many people are actually working. So if their benefits run out, then they are removed as being unemployed even if they are still looking work.
