Thousands of Social Security Checks Missing

Thousands of Social Security Checks Missing

    Updated: April 8, 2008 12:23 PM PDT

Up to 2,000 Social Security recipients, possibly more, are affected in the Las Vegas area and up in Elko.

"We want to emphasize the importance of direct deposit," said Rita Meier with the Social Security Administration.

Officials are investigating with the U.S. Postal Service to see what happened to all of those checks.

A major problem has left thousands without their Social Security checks. People are showing up in large numbers at Social Security offices in southern Nevada wondering where their check is.

There's no answer as to where those checks are, that's still a mystery. They were supposed to be mailed out last week and received April 3. In the meantime, Social Security officials have been inundated with folks wanting to know where their check is.

Up to 2,000 Social Security recipients, possibly more, are affected in the Las Vegas area and up in Elko. The Social Security Administration offices in Henderson and North Las Vegas were particularly busy with extremely long lines.

If you didn't receive your check, you're asked to come by a Social Security office to fill out the paperwork to get your monthly check. Social Security officials say there's a lesson to be learned from all of this.

"We want to emphasize the importance of direct deposit. If everyone had direct deposit, this would not have happened. The money would have been in the bank already. And this is a perfect example why an individual should have direct deposit set up," said Rita Meier with the Social Security Administration.

Officials are investigating with the U.S. Postal Service to see what happened to all of those checks. If you are waiting on your check, you may also call the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.

It'll be at least ten days to get the new check. However, if there is a dire need, like rent that's due or medications, the SSA will cut a new check for you on the spot, depending on your circumstances.

All those social security numbers could now be available for id thieves. How are these people protected against that?

They aren't, but hey, it is for a good cause, honest, hardworking people who just want a better life, and your social security check.
