And evidently Sen. Reid will be calling the Senate into special session this weekend if he did not get a final (read "affirmative") vote on H.R. 1388 (the GIVE/SERVE act), which will greatly expand Americorps and lay the groundwork for mandatory nat'l service Friday, Mar. 27. See:

Correction: The Senate passed H.R. 1388 by a vote of 79-19 March 23, 2009. Please see the link above for the Roll Call Vote. A large number of so-called "conservative Republicans" voted for it. My Sen. Hutchison, whose Dallas office aide told me she opposed the bill, was one.
