Three states in play for today's primaries

    10:55 AM

Happy Election Day. Voters in Indiana, North Carolina and Ohio are heading to the polls today for a handful of primary contests -- the first in a series of important races that will make the month of May one of the most interesting for political news in the 2010 cycle.

In Indiana, there's a Republican primary on for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Evan Bayh. Former Sen. Dan Coats is seeking his old seat, fending off challenges from former Rep. John Hostettler and state Sen. Marlin Stutzman. Also, Republican Reps. Mark Souder and Dan Burton are facing primary challenges today.

Moving east, it is the Democrats who battling it out for the seat being vacated by retiring Ohio Republican George Voinovich. Polls over the past few weeks show Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher with a big lead over Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner in that race.

There are six Democrats running in a primary today to challenge Republican Sen. Richard Burr in November. Polls show no clear favorite but suggest that Secretary of State Elaine Marshall and former state lawmaker Cal Cunningham are top contenders. If no candidates receives 40% of the vote, a runoff will be scheduled for June 22.

Polls close at 6 p.m. in Indiana and at 7:30 p.m. in Ohio and North Carolina.
