Time to RICO ACORN: RICO Act of 1970

    Time to RICO ACORN

I've never been fond of the RICO Act of 1970.

The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act was supposedly designed to combat organized crime.

But it has been misused widely by politicians to go after political enemies.

Yet, if there were ever a time and target to use its sweeping powers, the time is now and the target is ACORN.

It has been two weeks since the shocking undercover video work of James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles was released to the world. Those videos reveal beyond any shadow of a doubt that ACORN is the very definition of a "corrupt organization." Furthermore, they demonstrated clearly that ACORN officials in several cities are more than willing to get involved in the most heinous kind of criminal activity – up to and including murder and white slavery rings involving the exploitation of helpless underage foreign minors.

Nevertheless, since the astonishing sting operations were made public, no charges have been filed against ACORN, though lawsuits against O'Keefe and Giles have been filed by ACORN.

Last week, Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said any official investigations of ACORN by Congress might distract attention from more important issues – like railroading socialized medicine down the throats of the American people and spending money faster and more recklessly than drunken sailors could ever imagine.

    Gee, I wonder why?

Could it have anything to do with the fact that Reid needs ACORN's fraudulent voter registration program to have a fighting chance for re-election?

Larry Lomax, Nevada's Clark County registrar of voters, reported last year he saw "rampant fraud" in the 2,000 to 3,000 registrations ACORN turned in every week. He said 48 percent of them were "clearly fraudulent."

For instance, ACORN turned in registrations in Nevada last year the entire starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys. ACORN had hired 59 inmates from a work-release program at a nearby prison, some of whom had been convicted of identity theft crimes.

Those votes, of course, were intended to ensure victory for Barack Obama, a former ACORN attorney and community organizer. And now, Harry Reid needs them to stick around the Senate for the rest of his life – as do many other Democrats in Congress facing what is likely to be their toughest challenge since 1994.

It's obvious ACORN has friends in high places.

Nevertheless, it is inexcusable, unconscionable and inconceivable that no serious law enforcement effort has been successful at bringing this organizational plague in our midst to justice.

Is there not one honest U.S. attorney left – one that dares to defy the president?

Is there not one honest and enterprising FBI investigator who can see what the American public sees and bring these criminals to justice?

And where are all those reporters and editors who were scooped by the Giles and O'Keefe? Why are they not bringing pressure to bear on law enforcement and the president?

Last week, I proposed in this space that Obama should be grilled at every appearance he makes and at every press conference on whether he will publicly renounce ACORN. I made that suggestion not because I expect Obama to do the right and decent thing, but because I don't.

It's clear that Barack Obama is tied inextricably to ACORN. It is his birthplace more assuredly than is Honolulu, Hawaii. ACORN incubated Obama's political career. He is a creation of ACORN more than any other organization – including the Democratic Party.

While Obama has issued half-hearted criticism of ACORN based on what the American people have learned about its corruption in the last two weeks, he has failed to call for dismantling it. He has failed to call for defunding it. He has failed to call for prosecution of the crimes we all witnessed.

To date, ACORN has been only a blessing to Obama. He likely would not be in office without it.

But that was then. This is now. The American people didn't know what ACORN was last year. Now they do. If Obama doesn't throw ACORN under the bus, which he won't, then he will have to wear the ACORN badge like an albatross around his neck through 2012.

Would he dare block an investigation into the organization after what has already been revealed?

Will he refuse to condemn an organization that is ready, willing and able to traffic in underage prostitution?

Don't let your government officials duck this one.

Don't let them tell you they have more important and pressing matters on their agenda.

Don't let them get away with the hijacking of our electoral system and the criminalization of our Census.

Don't let them get away with protecting their little brown shirts.
