Top Ind. election official indicted for voter fraud

Update at 4:49 p.m. ET: Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels is calling on his fellow Republican to step down until the charges are resolved, the Associated Press says.

Update at 3:48 p.m. ET: White was indicted on three counts of vote fraud, one count of fraud on a financial institution, one count of theft and two counts of perjury, WRTV reports.

White admitted he used his ex-wife's address in Hamilton County to vote in the May 2010 primary. He called it a simple mistake.

White was charged with theft for accepting a salary while serving on the Fishers Town Council when he shouldn't have because of the residency issue.

Secretary of State Charlie White, a Republican, is accused of intentionally voting in the wrong precinct during the May 2010 primary, a potential felony,our sister paper the Indianapolis Star reports.

White easily defeated his Democratic opponent in November. If convicted, he would have to step down.
