CAMPO – A group of Mexicans preparing to illegally cross the border near Campo was ambushed by armed robbers late Friday, leaving one man dead and three others seriously wounded, Mexican authorities said Saturday.
The three injured men ran across the U.S. border to get help and were found by U.S. Border Patrol agents near the Mountain Empire Recreational Park along state Route 94.

AdvertisementOne had been shot in the leg, a second was shot in the head and a third suffered a broken arm, said Agustin Perez, a spokesman for the Baja California Public Safety Secretariat.
They were taken to local hospitals, including one who was flown to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego. Their conditions were unavailable Saturday.

The gunfire began sometime after 10 p.m. as the group of 10 to 15 men and women gathered at a spot called Rosa de Castilla along a popular smuggling route on the Mexican side of the border, Perez said.

Witnesses told Tecate police that four men tried to rob them, and the group dispersed into the wilderness.

One man was found dead from gunshot wounds, Perez said. No arrests have been made
