Wilbur Ross on EU: Objectives of new negotiation have been firmly set

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on the Trump administration's preliminary agreement with the European Union and efforts to reach a trade deal with Mexico and China.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross on Thursday said the Trump administration is turning all of its attention to Mexico to quickly renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

President Trump, in a letter replying to Mexico’s president-elect on Tuesday, called for a speedy deal that would lead to more jobs on both sides of the border. Trump has viewed the free trade pact as a deal that benefits Mexico more than the U.S.

Ross said the administration expects to get something worked out in the next few months.

“The new president [of Mexico] very quickly appointed the team that will do the trade negotiations for him, has made very clear he wants to get a deal done and he did all this without even waiting for his inauguration,” Ross told FOX Business Opens a New Window. ’ Maria Bartiromo on “Mornings with Maria Opens a New Window. .” “He will be inaugurated on the first of December and it looks pretty clear that his goal would be to try to get something resolved between the United States and Mexico prior to even his inauguration.”

There is nothing speedy at this point. Trump has been President for over a 18 months! NAFTA should have been shutdown long ago!

Trump's not going to shut NAFTA down if he can renegotiate it. He always said he would renegotiate first (treaty requires it) but if that failed, then he would give notice of withdrawal. The last I heard in early July is they are about 70% to 80% through it with only 3 sort of big issues left to work out which they thought then would take a couple of months to finish by end of August or early September. There's a new President so it might take a little longer but given the cooperation being shown by the newly-elected President, it looks like both sides want it to be "speedy".

This deal is with OMLA and he doesn't take office until Dec. so more waiting, just to even start negotiating.

Say what you will, but I'm beginning to believe Trump's threat to cancel NAFTA if the agreement could not be renegotiated was an empty threat. Yep, I'm not convinced he ever actually intended on canceling NAFTA. I think it's very possible he just issued the threat thinking it strengthened his negotiating position.

If NAFTA is as bad as Trump proclaimed during his campaign, which it is, he would have started the necessary procedures to end it immediately after moving into office and dealt with Mexico and Canada on individual trade deals.

Yep, I think Trump's blather on ending NAFTA was just that, blather.
