Tucson Deputy Sheriff Shot at During Pursuit, 1 Dead

Brian J. Pedersen Arizona Daily Star | Posted: Friday, July 9, 2010 6:45 am

Pima County Sheriff's deputy was shot at early Friday while pursuing a vehicle that failed to yield for a traffic stop and eventually crashed, killing one person, authorities said.

The deputy was attempting to stop a white 4-door vehicle for a speeding violation about 2:15 a.m. near North Campbell Avenue and East Roger Road when someone inside the vehicle started shooting at the deputy, Sheriff's Department spokesman Dep. Jason Ogan said.

The patrol car was hit three times but Dep. Randall Nice was not hit, Ogan said.

The deputy chased the vehicle west on Prince Road, and when the vehicle turned left to go south on North Fairview Avenue the driver lost control and crashed into a utility pole, Ogan said.

One person inside the vehicle was killed while the other ran from the scene but was caught a short time later by a Sheriff's K-9 unit with assistance from a Tucson Police Department helicopter, Ogan said.

Nice, a five-year veteran who was working a DUI patrol when he attempted to make the traffic stop, did not fire his weapon, Ogan said.

Deputies are continuing their investigation to determine why the suspects did not stop. Their names have not been released.

It is probably due to the usual causes; stolen vehicle, DUI, illegals drugs in vehicle, illegal immigrant, warrant out for them, or no valid driver's license and/or no insurance. We have hit and runs here all the time and some involve serious injury or death. It almost always boils down to one of the reasons mentioned above.

    Glad the officer is ok.

See no reference to illegal immigration so moving to Other Topics. If anyone finds it does involve illegals please let us know and we can move back to News. We know the media often leave out that little bit of info.
