First graders at Carroll Elementary recently experienced the thrill of arriving at Ellis Island in America. Ellis Island Day concludes the first grader’s United States unit.

Each student studied their own family history and prepared a visual aid and an oral report to share with their class. After studying how their own family made it to America, it was fun for the students to arrive at Ellis Island and catch their first glimpse of the Statue of Liberty.

The students dressed in clothing typical of an immigrant in the late 1800s and each carried a small bundle from home with a few meaningful items for the trip. When they arrived at Ellis Island, they were met by an immigration officer.

The first grade immigrants had their passports stamped and then went through nine checkpoint stations including a dental check, eyesight check, wellness check and a literacy and fitness test. After being admitted to America, the students were all smiles as they waived the American flag and said the Pledge of Allegiance with pride.
