Tyson gives S.A. Food Bank more than 15 tons of chicken

Express-News Tyson Foods Inc. donated more than 31,000 pounds of chicken Wednesday to the San Antonio Food Bank, its first major donation to a Texas hunger relief organization as a result of a partnership with the League of United Latin American Citizens and America's Second Harvest.
Eric Cooper, the food bank's executive director, called it "a significant donation in our world."

This center of the plate product is the most highly demanded product and the least supplied," Cooper said. "So this donation from Tyson is like gold."

The donation was made in advance of LULAC's 2008 National Women's Conference, to be held Friday and Saturday at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa.

Tyson, as part of the partnership formed last year, pledged to distribute 1 million pounds of chicken during the next three years to combat hunger relief in Latino communities throughout the country, said Javier Ortiz, the company's multicultural communications and community relations manager.

Ortiz said an initial donation of more than 35,000 pounds of chicken was made to the Chicago Food Depository at the time the partnership was announced. Chicago was chosen as the initial recipient because it was the site of LULAC's annual convention in 2007.

The Chicago Food Depository is also a member of America's Second Harvest.

"What a better way to start than have this donation here in San Antonio," Ortiz said.

Nearly 70 percent of those who receive assistance through the San Antonio Food Bank are Latinos. Nationwide, about 17 percent of people getting help from America's Second Harvest are Hispanic, according to the 2007 Hunger Almanac.

Rosa Rosales, national LULAC president, said the donated protein will provide 120,000 meals to families in San Antonio and South Texas.

"I know the food service bank will do a great job in its distribution centers in making sure that people will get these meals," Rosales said.

Cooper said he expected all of the donated chicken would be distributed to the food bank's member agencies, such as shelters and soup kitchens, by Friday.

"This is just the beginning," Rosales said. "We're looking forward to having a total of 1 million pounds be distributed across the country to help end hunger. ... A good quality of life can only be achieved when you have food in your stomach."

Besides its food donations, Tyson has agreed to help produce an in-depth study of the extent and root causes of hunger among Latinos as part of its partnership with LULAC and America's Second Harvest.

the question to ask i guess is how many pounds does Tyson provide our poor US Citizens and legal immigrants, blacks, whites, Hispanics and others as compared to what the so-called latino community is receiving.

How does one differenciate between a bribe and a donation?

Besides its food donations, Tyson has agreed to help produce an in-depth study of the extent and root causes of hunger among Latinos as part of its partnership with LULAC and America's Second Harvest.
Conducting the study to determine if Tyson should raise it wages? ......doubtful.

The study will be invalid unless the data is broken down into citizens, legal immigrants and illegal immigrants.
    1. Why does this just focus on Latinos--why not the poor?
    2. Will it consider businesses exploiting workers?
    3. Will it consider businesses hiring illegal immigrants?
    4. Will it consider the education level of the individuals?
    5. Will it consider businesses who pay 'in cash' and no taxes or benefits?
    6. Will it break down the classifications of English and non-English speaking individuals?
    7. Will it study poverty levels of those without documents, those who have stolen idenities, those with legal documents, and citizens?
    8. Will it consider health status of the individuals and those with and without health insurance?
    9. Will it consider numbers of those receiving U.S. assistant programs and the numbers who do not.
    10. Will it consider martial status and family size?

There are may factors to take into consideration to produce a valid study.

How about an "in-depth study of the extent and root causes of hunger among Americans" since illegal aliens have arrived here and started taking jobs from Americans and "hand-outs" from churches that Americans used to worship at before churches started "favoring and pandering" to illegal aliens?
