Burn This B*tch Down! White House Says We’ve Made ‘Historical Progress’ on $18 Trillion Debt

By Michael Hausam (10 hours ago) | Editor's Choice, Nation, Politics

Just imagine for a second what it’s like to be Josh Earnest. Your daily task, what you’re instructed to do by your superiors, is to explain that the sky is not actually blue and that the sun actually rises in the West.
In the Wednesday White House press briefing, Earnest was asked about the fact that, as of last week, the outstanding federal debt exceeded $18 trillion ($18,000,000,000,000) for the first time in the nation’s history. About 40% of that happened during Barack Obama’s presidency.
Earnest responded by pretending he was asked a question about the deficit. Then he answered that unasked question.
The money-shots from his non-response response:
The fact is we’ve made substantial, even historic progress in lowering that short-term deficit.
The fact is we’ve now cut the deficit by more than two-thirds — or by two-thirds since the President took office. That’s the fastest sustained rate of deficit reduction since the end of World War II.So we’ve made tremendous progress on this.
The problem is that although he avoided the elephant in the room, the debt; the 900-pound gorilla of the deficit remains, regardless of his assertions.
Here are some graphs to point out the uncomfortable facts that Earnest avoided:

Note one glaringly obvious fact: Obama’s deficits in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 were the four highest years of debt the country had ever had. Period.
Although Earnest may be right about the change since then, the reality is that had spending not decreased, they would’ve continued to set records. That they spent less than the staggering amount they’d previously spent is not something to be particularly proud of, no matter the spin.

Getting back to the question that was asked, this graph shows the increase in public debt, which has increased massively under the President. Debt held by the government – basically a loan issued to itself, guaranteed by taxpayers – is another $7 trillion ($7,000,000,000,000).

Here’s another way of putting it:

While considering a word like “historic,” this is certainly an interesting perspective.
Another important fact to remember is that as long as deficits exist, spending above the revenues received, the debt will continue to increase. No administration budget or forecast suggests a zero deficit, let alone a surplus. Without a surplus, the record-level debt literally breaks a new record every second.
Considering these facts and the job Earnest has, which is basically to be the President’s public defender, one could make a compelling argument that he should be pitied. But not compelling enough. Everyone knows the sky is blue and Josh’s saying it isn’t will never come close to making it so.
