The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer Spruance will be commissioned in Key West, Florida on October 1. — US Navy
The guided-missile destroyer Spruance is en route to Key West, Florida, where the 510-foot warship will be commissioned before it heads to its homeport of San Diego, says the Navy. Commissioning is set for October 1st, and the ship will leave for the West Coast two days later. Spruance, the 61st Burke-class destroyer, is named after Admiral Raymond A. Spruance, the famed World War II naval commander who oversaw such pivotal fights as the battles for Midway and the Philippine Sea.
San Diego is already home to 15 Burke destroyers, including Benfold, Decatur, Gridley, Halsey, Kidd, Howard, John Paul Jones, Higgins, Milius, Pinckney, Preble, Sampson, Sterett, Stockdale, and William P. Lawrence.
