SHEFFIELD will become the destination of choice for Mexican students wanting to study in the UK after more details emerged of a major trade deal.

The agreement between the University of Sheffield, the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre near Rotherham and Toluca University in Mexico will also help cutting edge research firms in South Yorkshire break into the multi-billion pound Mexican car industry.

Mexico is one of the top 10 car manufacturing countries in the world, producing more than two million vehicles for Ford, VW, GM, Nissan, Honda and Chrysler.

Under the deal, witnessed by Hallam MP and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Sheffield University and the AMRC will benefit from a flow of fee-paying foreign students, access to lucrative new markets in the Mexican car industry and from paid consultancy work.

The AMRC is also expected to receive new private sector investment because of its industrial partnership with Mexico, which is likely to create new jobs at the centre.

Mexico’s industry will benefit from the manufacturing research and consultancy carried out at the AMRC and from the highly-trained engineering graduates who then return to the country from Sheffield.

Speaking to The Star, Mr Clegg said: “The benefits of this type of partnership with the world’s emerging economies will be seen in the jobs created and the businesses started across the country.

“Sheffield University is leading Britain’s manufacturing revival across the globe and is making a crucial contribution to re-balancing the economy.
