Minus zero: Collier elementary schools make 50 the lowest possible score

NAPLES — Fifty is the new zero — if you are a Collier County elementary school student, that is.

That’s because the Collier County School District is taking a different approach to help kids succeed. In an attempt to help students learn while making it easier for them to succeed, district teachers will issue a score no lower than 50.

Beth Thompson, the district’s executive director for elementary school programs, said the idea is not new in the Collier district. Educators have studied it for years as the district looked to make grading practices more effective.

That's why they want no validictorian in some schools, no competition, school uniforms etc. We can't have anyone feel that they dont' do as well as someone else. We are all the same. We are all just as smart as the next person, we are all just as athletic, we are all equally successful, we are all on the same pay level, we are all the SAME. Sounds like they are falling in line with Comrad Obama.

The problem is you can't escape reality. In real life, there are zeros. The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. They are not doing the students a favor...they are handicapping them.

If you don't show up at work, do you get paid? Of course not!!

If you don't do the required assignment, you didn't do the work and deserve NOTHING......hence the zero. And I've yet run into a situation where a child is not given the opportunity to make up that assignment for full, or partial credit.

A D, on the other hand, is still a passing grade. Why are they giving kids passing grades, instilling in them that you will pass even if you chose not to do what is required of you because you just didn't feel like it?

This has nothing to do with self esteem or hurt feelings for crying out loud. This is about preparing these kids for life and personal responsibility.

Actually the libs are preparing these kids to live in the welfare line. To complain and whine when they don't get what they want. And to expect others to work twice as hard to support their laziness. Falls in line with Obama's redistribution of wealth. Those who suck it up and do regardless of feelings and self esteem who bust their butts for what they have will have to support those curled up in a ball collecting government hand outs.

This is really dumb anyway. So what happens when a kid gets a 50? It will still "hurt his self esteem", it is the lowest score possible, he will still be the dumbest one in the class.

It's like teachers switching from red to purple pens to correct mistakes. Now purple means you missed the answer instead of red.

In the case of the kids going through the school systems nowadays, they will all be getting that 50% and presto.....none of them will be "dumber" than the rest of their classmates with all being equally illiterate.

And I remember that red pen issue as well......couldn't mark the papers in red because it's an "angry color" and all the classmates could see it a mile away causing "embarassment and shame"

What's next.....no awards, ribbons, student of the week/month, no honor roll........ no diplomas because kids who don't graduate might feel bad?
