I just received the following email from my former ultra-liberal rep from Stockton CA. Seemingly she does not know I moved.

Dear Friends,

My constituents at home are asking, "Just why is this rescue plan so important?"

The available credit you and I rely on every day is disappearing. The strain of accomplishing the simple things like applying for college loans, getting a mortgage, purchasing a new car or sustaining small businesses is growing every day the crisis goes unresolved.

At this moment the cost to families is too great to do nothing

The Bush administration asked for a blank check. Congress said no. We have crafted a new, commonsense plan for the American people by bringing relief to working families and keeping an eye toward America’s long-term financial stability.

That is why I have been working to protect your money by insisting on:

* No blank check;

* Strong oversight and regular updates to Congress;

* Recoupment of any losses to the taxpayers;

* An equity stake so taxpayers stand to benefit from their investment;

* A phased-in approach for the money requiring Presidential and Congressional approval;

* A bipartisan board to oversee the acquisition of securities;

* A focus on helping homeowners avoid foreclosure; and

* Keeping taxpayer dollars out of CEOs’ pockets.

The huge cost of this plan should cause anxiety. But there is a very real possibility that taxpayers will see some, if not all of this money returned to the Treasury as the housing market stabilizes and the economy recovers.

In the coming days, weeks and months we must harness our anger and frustration into action. Action to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

For markets to work, regulation is required. Just as we have checks on the levers of power in government, we need checks to those on Wall Street.

During my fourteen years on Wall Street, several years ago, money moved as fast as people could negotiate trades. Now computers move money and information at the speed of light and the current regulations just aren’t working. We must restore sensible and fair oversight to our financial markets—the future of our overall economy depend on it.

Moving forward, I will continue to have an open dialogue with you to fix this system.
