- Multiple sightings of high-altitude balloons were reported in Colorado, Arizona and Alabama, sparking concerns about foreign surveillance and government secrecy, reminiscent of the 2023 Chinese spy balloon incident.
- Public confusion and distrust grow as social media floods with images and videos of unidentified balloons, some suspected to be Chinese spy platforms, while others are later confirmed as U.S. military tests.
- Civil liberties concerns arise as ACLU warns about domestic surveillance risks, questioning what data is being collected—even if balloons are intended for overseas military use.
- Aerostar balloons identified in some cases, including a steerable balloon over Alabama, tracked at 59,200 feet, raising privacy concerns despite claims of scientific or telecom purposes.
- Echoes of China's 2023 spy balloon resurface, with past reports revealing Beijing's use of U.S. satellite tech for espionage, fueling fears of easily accessible surveillance tools and weak airspace defenses.
Americans are once again looking skyward with unease as unidentified high-altitude balloons drift silently over multiple states, reigniting fears of foreign surveillance and government secrecy. Reports from Colorado, Arizona and Alabama describe white objects hovering far above commercial airspace, eerily reminiscent of the 2023 Chinese spy balloon incident that triggered national alarm before being shot down off the coast of South Carolina.
The sudden reappearance of these enigmatic objects has left citizens questioning who—or what—is watching from above.
Locals have flooded social media with photos and videos of the mysterious balloons, pleading for answers. While some speculate they may be routine research projects, others fear they represent a new wave of foreign espionage. In Tucson, Arizona, multiple sightings this year led to suspicions that one balloon was "a spy camera platform from China transmitting military secrets in fast bursts." However, later reports confirmed at least one belonged to a U.S. military test—raising fresh privacy concerns.
Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst at the American Civil Liberties Union, warned: "It is a technology that should not and constitutionally cannot be applied to the American people. Even testing for eventual overseas use in legitimate combat theaters raises a lot of questions about what kind of data is being collected."
Earlier sightings in June caused unrest when balloons lingered over Tucson and Sierra Vista for more than a week. Social media users attempted—and failed—to track one balloon spotted over Lemmon, Arizona, using flight monitoring apps.
"Not showing on Flightradar24, though, like others have in weeks past," one Reddit user noted. Another added, "I saw it a few minutes ago outside. Usually, they're at 60,000 feet. It must be huge!"
In Boulder, Colorado, residents reported seeing what was later identified as an Aerostar Thunderhead steerable balloon—a device capable of carrying signal-gathering equipment, communications tools or other sensors. Aerostar, a company specializing in high-altitude balloons for scientific, military and telecom applications, confirmed ownership of several objects spotted nationwide.
Similarly, meteorologist James Spann identified a balloon drifting over North Alabama as belonging to Aerostar. He posted on X: "Getting a number of reports of a high-altitude object over North Alabama… looks like it is a balloon (HBAL787). It has been drifting south over NE Alabama this afternoon."
The balloon later moved into Tennessee, hovering at 59,200 feet—far above commercial airliners. Scientists say such balloons are commonly used for atmospheric research, but their sudden visibility and elusive flight patterns continue to unsettle the public.
The shadow of China's spy balloon incident
The renewed sightings evoke memories of February 2023, when a Chinese surveillance balloon traversed the U.S. before being downed by an F-22 fighter jet. A subsequent Newsweek investigation revealed the balloon was equipped with American-made satellite communication modules and sophisticated sensors from at least five U.S. companies—raising concerns about how easily Beijing could exploit commercially available technology for espionage.
According to BrightU.AI's Enoch, a Chinese patent uncovered during the probe showed detailed plans for using U.S. satellite systems to control spy balloons and harvest sensitive data. Military analysts warned that such technology could be purchased online, making it difficult to prevent future intrusions.
The reappearance of high-altitude balloons—whether scientific, military or foreign—has deepened public skepticism about government transparency and national security. With past incidents revealing vulnerabilities in U.S. airspace and the potential misuse of commercial technology, officials face mounting pressure to clarify the nature of these objects before speculation spirals further.
For now, Americans remain vigilant, watching the skies with a mix of curiosity and caution—unsure whether the next balloon overhead is benign or a silent observer in an unseen war of information.

House Defense Panel to Hold Hearing for ‘Real Answers’ Over Chinese Balloon: Sen. Jon Tester

The Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee will hold a hearing to get answers surrounding the suspected Chinese spy balloon that floated over the United States.
Sen. Jon Tester (D-Mont.), chair of the Senate defense subcommittee, announced on Friday that Biden administration officials will have to answer questions about the balloon, which was first detected in the sky over his home state.
“Montanans value their freedom and privacy and I’ll always fight to defend both,” Tester said in a statement. “China’s actions are a clear threat to those values and to America’s national security, and I’m demanding answers from the Biden Administration.”
“I will be pulling people before my committee to get real answers on how this happened, and how we can prevent it from ever happening again.”
An exact date for the hearing has yet to be scheduled.
Republican Response
The other Montana Senator, Republican Steve Daines, has voiced strong disapproval against the Biden administration’s handling of the Chinese balloon, calling it a show of “weakness and indecision” that has “empowered and emboldened our enemies.”
“I believe that Montana truly got a firsthand look at the Biden administration’s weakness on foreign policy this week,” Daines said during a press conference on Friday. “It is a tremendous embarrassment for the United States of America. Montanans and all the American people deserve answers from the Pentagon and from this administration on what happened and what is being done to ensure this never happens again.”
The aircraft, flying at about 60,000 feet, was described to be the size of three buses with the ability to maneuver. According to Pentagon, it flew from China, then to the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, and through northwest Canada into the area of Billings, Montana.
Equipped with a “large payload underneath the surveillance component,” the balloon had already traveled over sensitive military sites before it was spotted by local residents. Montana is home to one of America’s three nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base.
Defense Secretary Confirms Destruction
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Saturday confirmed that the balloon has been destroyed, telling reporters that President Joe Biden gave his authorization Wednesday to shoot it down “as soon as the mission could be accomplished without undue risk to American lives under the balloon’s path.”
The balloon was being used by Beijing “in an attempt to surveil strategic sites in the continental United States,” he noted.
After “careful analysis,” Austin said, military commanders decided to not shoot down the balloon over land “due to the size and altitude of the balloon and its surveillance payload,” which would pose an “undue risk to people across a wide area.” Instead, they waited to carry out the attack until the balloon was safely over the Atlantic water.
The ill-timed balloon incident is expected to further strain the already tense relationship between Washington and Beijing. Just hours before Secretary of State Antony Blinken was set to embark his visit to China, he said he would have to indefinitely postpone the high-stakes trip.
“In light of China’s unacceptable action, I am postponing my planned travel this weekend in China,” Blinken said Friday, noting that his department has decided that “conditions were not conducive for a constructive visit at this time” after discussing the matter with other Biden administration officials and with members of Congress.

Chinese Spy Balloon Collected No Intelligence, Milley Now Says
MONDAY, SEP 18, 2023 - 09:10 PM
Authored by Kyle Anzalone via AntiWar.com,
In February, a Chinese balloon floated over the US, prompting politicians on both sides of the aisle to claim Beijing was threatening Americans. The event led American officials to cancel high-level meetings with their Chinese diplomats. Seven months later, Gen. Mark Milley said the balloon never collected intelligence.
Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, told “CBS News Sunday Morning” the US intelligence community does not believe the craft collected intelligence but still maintained it was a “spy balloon.” America’s top general said, “The intelligence community, their assessment – and it’s a high-confidence assessment – [is] that there was no intelligence collection by that balloon.” Milley continued, “I would say it was a spy balloon that we know with a high degree of certainty got no intelligence, and didn’t transmit any intelligence back to China.”

Source: US Department of DefenseIn Early February, a large balloon was spotted in the northern US. The craft was immediately claimed to be a spy craft by American officials. Secretary of State Antony Blinken slammed Beijing’s decision to fly the balloon over the US as “both unacceptable and irresponsible.” America’s top diplomat then canceled a meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister.
On Sunday, Milley, who is retiring later this month, explained that the Chinese balloon ended up over the US due to unexpected weather. “Those winds are very high,” the general said. “The particular motor on that aircraft can’t go against those winds at that altitude.”
From the start, Beijing has contested Washington’s claims that the craft was intended for surveillance, insisting it was merely a weather balloon for scientific purposes. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Washington’s response to the balloon damaged bilateral relations. “This is a clear overreaction that seriously contravenes the spirit of international law and customary international practice,” he explained. “What the US did has had a grave impact on the efforts and progress made by China and the US in stabilizing bilateral relations.”
Still, politicians told Americans the balloon was a threat. Senator Lindsey Graham claimed Beijing was “up to no good.” “I don’t know crap about balloons, but I got common sense that if the Chinese got a balloon with three tractor trailers hitched to it, they’re up to no good,” the senator stated. “And why would you let them go to South Carolina? This makes no sense, it doesn’t pass the smell test, and this is dangerous.”
Democrat Sen. Jon Tester called the balloon “a clear threat.” While Democrat Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi “Indeed, this incident demonstrates that the CCP threat is not confined to distant shores — it is here at home and we must act to counter this threat.”

Senator Ted Cruz described the balloon as a threat and attacked President Joe Biden for not shooting down the craft over the US. “He allowed a full week for the Chinese to conduct spying operations over the United States, over sensitive military installations, exposing not just photographs but the potential of intercepted communications.” He added, “[Shooting down the balloon] is absolutely what the president should have done. Unfortunately, he didn’t do that until a week after it entered US airspace.”
Biden ordered the military to shoot down the balloon after it had passed over the US and it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. In the weeks after the Chinese craft crossed American skies, Biden ordered the military to shoot down three additional balloons. The Pentagon later admitted that all three craft were civilian-launched weather and hobby balloons.

Satellite images show China is rapidly expanding SPY BASES in Cuba

China appears to be expanding its spy bases in Cuba. The Washington, D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) first revealed this development in a July 2 report, accompanied by satellite images taken in March and April. The think tank pointed out that four military facilities in the island – Bejucal, El Salao, Wajay and Calabazar – have had upgrades. It showed current construction at Bejucal, Wajay and Calabazar, along with work on the earlier unreported El Salao site.
According to CSIS, Bejucal is the largest of the four facilities. It first came to eminence during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the base was utilized to store nuclear weapons for the Soviet Union.
More recently, it has earned importance as a major signals intelligence monitoring station, suspected to be tracking electronic communications for China. For this purpose, Bejucal has been improved to better monitor and communicate with satellites which is useful to China's military and space program. Aside from these upgrades, a fresh electronic antenna enclosure has been installed in facility.
The Wajay and Calabazar locations, both located near the Cuban capital Havana, have seen development as well. CSIS analysts mentioned evidence of a growing and developing mission, as well as the installation of antenna, radar dishes and other equipment that could assist those using it to monitor satellites.
El Salao, the latest site, can intercept communications from Guantanamo Bay. While it appears to be still under construction, its proximity to the naval base near the city of Santiago de Cuba could be a matter of concern for Washington.
"Without access to classified materials, pinpointing the specific targets of these assets is nearly impossible," the report stated. "Nonetheless, the growth of space-monitoring equipment at sites like Bejucal and Calabazar is notable given that Cuba lacks its own satellites or space program."
Beijing, Havana deny CSIS allegations of espionage
Beijing and Havana agreed to a close defense and intelligence cooperation in 2022, with the treaty involving a joint military training facility and a spy base on Cuba. The four facilities cited in the CSIS report appear to be the result of that accord, with the upgrades ostensibly helping China with its espionage endeavors in the United States. (Related: China has had a spy base in Cuba for decades, retired army counterintelligence agent says.)
The U.S. Office of the Director of National Intelligence refused to comment on the think tank's July 2 report, and the Cuban government likewise dismissed it. The Chinese government also dismissed the report's findings, dismissing it as "nothing but slander."
"The U.S. side has reportedly hyped up China's establishment of spy bases or conducting surveillance activities in Cuba," said Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in Washington, in an email. "The U.S. should immediately stop its malicious smearing of China. The U.S. is no doubt the leading power in terms of eavesdropping and does not even spare its allies.
The CSIS' revelations nevertheless follow a report last year by the Wall Street Journal about China paying Cuba billions of dollars to establish a spy facility. American officials later said that while China had upgraded its intelligence facilities in Cuba in 2019, Washington's response had stopped Beijing from attaining its goals.
"We're confident that we can continue to meet our security commitments," Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, U.S. Department of Defense press secretary, told members of the media during a July 2 press briefing.
"We know that the People's Republic of China is going to continue to try to enhance its presence in Cuba, and we will continue to keep working to disrupt that. We're continuing to monitor this closely, taking steps to counter it."
