US aircraft carrier-led strike group headed towards Korean Peninsula
By Ryan Browne
Updated 8:48 PM ET, Sat April 8, 2017
(CNN) A US aircraft carrier-led strike group is headed towards the western Pacific Ocean near the Korean Peninsula, a US defense official confirmed to CNN.
The move of the USS Carl Vinson is in response to recent North Korean provocations, the official said.
It is not uncommon for aircraft carriers to operate in that area, and the US regularly deploys military assets, such as aircraft, to the region as a show of force. In fact the Carl Vinson was in South Korea last month for military exercises.
Earlier this week, North Korea launched a Scud extended-range missile, which US officials said exploded in flight. The regime also has recently conducted several missile engine tests as it works to improve its ballistic missile technology.
The Carl Vinson is moving from Singapore towards the peninsula the official said.
Reuters first reported the move of the group.

US deploys navy strike group to Korean peninsula
- 25 minutes ago
- From the sectionAsia
Image copyrightREUTERSImage captionThe Carl Vinson is now heading towards the Korean peninsulaThe US military has ordered a navy strike group to move towards the Korean peninsula, amid growing concerns about North Korea's missile programme.
The Carl Vinson Strike Group comprises an aircraft carrier and other warships.
US Pacific Command described the deployment - now heading towards the western Pacific - as a prudent measure to maintain readiness in the region.
President Trump has said the US is prepared to act alone to deal with the nuclear threat from North Korea.
"The number one threat in the region continues to be North Korea, due to its reckless, irresponsible and destabilising programme of missile tests and pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability," US Pacific Command spokesman Dave Benham said.

The strike group comprises the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, two guided-missile destroyers and a guided-missile cruiser.
As well as massive striking power, the carrier group has the capability to intercept ballistic missiles.
It was originally due to make port calls in Australia but instead has been diverted from Singapore to the west Pacific - where it recently conducted exercises with the South Korean Navy.
North Korea has carried out several nuclear tests and experts predict more could be in the offing as the country moves closer towards developing a nuclear warhead with a big enough range to reach the US.
On Wednesday North Korea test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile from its eastern port of Sinpo into the Sea of Japan.
The test - condemned by Japan and South Korea - came on the eve of a visit by China's President Xi Jinping to the US to meet President Donald Trump.
The two leaders discussed how to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes as the US steps up the pressure on China, a historic ally of Pyongyang, to help reduce tension.
China has however been reluctant to isolate its neighbour, fearing its collapse could spawn a refugee crisis and bring the US military to its doorstep.

How do you solve a problem like North Korea?
Mr Trump said in a recent interview that Washington was ready to act without Beijing's co-operation: "If China is not going to solve North Korea, we will."
The North is banned from any missile or nuclear tests by the UN, though it has repeatedly broken those sanctions.

Last month, North Korea fired four ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan from the Tongchang-ri region, near the border with China.
Japanese PM Shinzo Abe called it a "new stage of threat".

The US Treasury recently slapped sanctions on 11 North Korean business representatives and one company, while US politicians overwhelmingly backed a bill relisting the North as a state sponsor of terror.
North Korea responded by warning that it will retaliate if the international community steps up sanctions, saying the US was forcing the situation "to the brink of war".
China has long been North Korea's closest diplomatic ally and trading partner, but the relationship has become increasingly strained over Pyongyang's refusal to halt nuclear and missile testing.
There are fears that Pyongyang could eventually develop the ability to launch long-range nuclear missiles capable of striking the mainland US.

The UN and NATO is useless and it is always the US that is expected to do something when the cry for help goes out. Any hard decision making they are to slow to decide to many politics and weak leaders involved. Why do we even bother and give them our money every year. Trump is right they should be paying us. No money ..then barter instead of IOU's that never get paid anyway.

This is not good.
Just me, but I think it is just saber rattling on both sides. I think it is designed to keep us from being concerned about the number of illegals that aren't being sent home, maybe the fact we are selling this country - large pieces at a time.
The frightening thing about all this is that one slip could have devastating results.
I'm a little tired of our politicians playing games with this country and the world.

North Korea lashes out at US Navy strike group move

North Korea has said it will defend itself "by powerful force of arms" in response to the US deployment of a Navy strike group to the Korean peninsula.
The foreign ministry, quoted by state news agency KCNA, said the deployment showed "reckless moves for invading" had "reached a serious phase".
The US Pacific Command says it is aimed at maintaining readiness in the region.

"We will hold the US wholly accountable for the catastrophic consequences to be entailed by its outrageous actions," said the foreign ministry statement quoted by KCNA.

"The DPRK is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the US," the statement said.
The US naval deployment showed North Korea had been right to develop nuclear weapons capability for use in self defence or in a pre-emptive strike, the statement added.
North Korea has carried out several nuclear tests and experts predict more could be in the offing as it moves closer towards developing a nuclear warhead that could reach the US.
There have been indications from North Korea that it may test an intercontinental missile, even though it is banned from any tests under UN resolutions.
North Korea says it is provoked by military exercises between the US and South Korea, which it sees as preparation for an invasion.
