Senate Confirms Locke as Commerce Secretary

Senate Confirms Locke as Commerce Secretary

    Tuesday, March 24, 2009
    By Matthew Daly, Associated Press

Washington (AP) - The Senate has confirmed former Washington Gov. Gary Locke as commerce secretary.

The 59-year-old Locke was the nation's first Chinese-American governor. He has promised to focus on job creation and to closely oversee the 2010 census.

Some Republican lawmakers have been critical of Obama administration comments indicating that the White House might seek greater control over the census.

Locke is President Barack Obama's third pick to run the Commerce Department. His first two nominees withdrew.

The Commerce Department has broad responsibilities, including the census, many aspects of international trade, oceans policy and weather forecasts. It is also overseeing the nation's transition to digital TV.

So the guy has some Chinese ethnicity in his background. But with a name like Gary Locke, he is an American, so why even bring that up?

The 59-year-old Locke was the nation's first Chinese-American governor.
He was born in Seattle as a "third generation American" according to his bio, never lived in China nor held Chinese citizenship. How could he be Chinese-American?

Just like I saw the press recently called the head of the DC school system who was born in the USA "Korean-American".

    What is with these reporters?

They don't call me German-American or Irish-American or even Native American even thought that is my ancestory.

Ditto! I am fourth generation American and my ancestors came from Germany, Ireland, England, and I am also part Choctaw! When I'm asked I always say I'm American and why would I be a hyphenated anything?

I don't have any English ancestory, which comes in handy when the brown supremacists call me "Anglo". I tell them "I'm not a stinking Anglo, I am Irish!" Of course actually I have nothing against the English but it throws them off balance since these racists call all white people "Anglo".
