Veterans Bring Christian Flag, Plan to Stake Out Memorial

KING, N.C. (WGHP) - A group of Stokes County war veterans plan to stay at the Veterans Memorial 24-hours a day for the next month to assure the Christian flag is being displayed at the site in King.
The group of 10 veterans are protesting after King City Council members voted last week to take down the Christian flag at the Veterans Memorial in Central Park after the city received a letter from the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State on August 11 and a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on August 16 threatening lawsuits if the flag was not taken down.
The vigil protest was organized by Ray Martini, a Vietnam War veteran.
"I refuse to let a few turn around and try to desecrate our intensive fighting and defending America by taking down what the majority love," said Martini. "If you don't like what we've done here, then just don't come."
The decision to remove the flag stems from estimates that it could cost the city as much as $300,000 to fight a possible lawsuit from the ACLU.
"I pay my taxes just like everyone... I believe the memorial should be here and the flag should stand," said Wendy Ingle, a Stokes County resident.
Also this week, a Afghanistan war veteran has also notified King officials they have until Friday to remove a cross on a statue at the memorial. If the cross is not removed, the veteran has said he will contact the ACLU.
An American Legion Post put the monument and cross next to the veteran's memorial on city-owned land. American Legion member Jim Rasmond said his post won't remove the cross.
I attended the first rally in King at the monument and they have been there since with voluteers. And Monday there wil be another rally and Oct the 3rd."When you have knowledge, you have a responsibility to do better"_ Paula Johnson

Amazing how ONE guy can whine a bit and get his way when 99% of the citizens disagree with him and want to keep the Christian flag. I wonder if this 'Afghanistan war vet' converted to the 'religion of peace' while over there?
Also, I wonder if this memorial was built and maintained with PRIVATE money/donations or taxpayer funds.
