ELGIN -- A man wanted by the military for desertion was among five people arrested early Saturday after police responded to a fight that yielded the seizure of a MAK 10 automatic weapon and "an ample amount of cannabis."

Ivan Rodriguez, 19, of 407 Campus Drive, Elgin, was among those arrested, even though he initially had been treated as a victim in the disturbance. Rodriguez was arrested on a warrant charging him with military desertion.

An Aurora man and three Elgin residents were among those who were arrested. According to police, Jose L. Lopez, 19, of 435 Addison St., Jeremy K. Martin, 20, of 670 Congdon Ave., and Maria M. Aguirre, 18, of 428 Addison St., all are charged with unlawful consumption of alcohol. Police said Robert J. Virola, 21, of Aurora, is charged with contributing to the delinquency of children.

Elgin police responded about 3:43 a.m. Saturday to a report of a fight on the 400 block of Barrett. Police said the fight erupted during a party, and broken beer bottles were being used as weapons. Officers arriving observed numerous people fleeing the scene. One person found at the scene had been cut numerous times in the head and body. He was transported to Provena St. Joseph Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

But police said this individual gave them false information about his identity. Police learned he was Rodriguez and was wanted by U.S. military officials for desertion. Police gang crime investigators found Rodriguez, who had been released from the hospital, later Saturday and he was being held for military authorities.

According to police, several others who fled the Barrett Street party went to an address in the 400 block of Park Street. Officers gained access to that site and found an ample amount of cannabis, U.S. currency, and a MAK 10 automatic weapon. It was at this address that the four were arrested on alcohol-related charges.

Police said possession of the weapon and drugs is being investigated, as is the cause of the altercation and identities of participants. According to police, several of the individuals involved are known street gang members or associates.
