Welfare mothers to be forced to work

    Jonathan Oliver, Political Editor

ALMOST all benefit claimants will be forced either to look for a job or prepare for work if they want to continue to receive state handouts, under a shake-up of the welfare state.

Single mothers of children as young as one and people registered unfit for work will be compelled to go on training courses and work experience or risk cuts to their benefits.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, James Purnell, the work and pensions secretary, said: “Virtually everyone will be doing something in return for their benefits.â€

So, with outsourceing our jobs, illegal aliens taking our jobs and all of the layoffs that are occurring, just where do they think they will get a job. When I was off work for a year and a half I couldn't even get a job thru an agency. They needed you to have been working in the last 6 months. What a joke. They should have done this years ago.

    This is a British article.

If you want welfare in Texas, you have to go to job training/work and can only receive help for 2 years and if you have more children, your benefits do not increase and you are required to go after dead beat parents.

This is what they are looking to do in the UK. We already did this, back in 1997.

Lifetime welfare is a thing of the past in America. People have to work, and there is a lifetime cap on full benefits (about two years).

I have a niece who has three children and a husband who is in and out of jail. When he is out of jail, he doesn't work. She receives food stamps, free medical care for her three children, free school breakfast and lunches and I have an idea that her rent is subsidized also and at the same time he is living with her. I always thought that the state checked to see if a man was living in a house that was receiving food stamps etc. But I guess they don't. She works as a clerk at a 7-11. She files her income tax at the end of January every year using the earned income tax credit. I believe that if an individual receives help from the state as she does, their tax records should be flagged and any refund they receive should be sent to the state that is supporting them. Last year they bought a 42" flat screen TV with the tax refund.

It is possible to game the system by, among other things, not counting some people as belonging to the household. No, they don't raid to check for men in the house, like they used to.

Free lunches and breakfasts at school is a different program than welfare, and the schools like it because the more free lunch kids they have, the more other stuff they (the schools) qualify for. Also, in my state, they want to have as many kids as possible in attendence on the day of the count, which determines their Per Pupil Operating Revenue calculation (the state money they get), so they want enrollment to be high.

The fact that your niece's hubby is a perennial jailbird may be what made them throw up their hands - those folks have a hard time finding work even in boom times.

Welfare traditionally means cash assistance to families. It may also be cash plus food stamps. There are dozens of other assistance programs, each with its own guidlines.

Section 8 housing assistance is a separate program from welfare. I once applied to be a Section 8 landloard, and was told to notify them if I saw signs of any extra people living in the house (i.e. a man).

I'd report it to the section 8 folks. They are the ones that seemed the most interested.
