BAYTOWN, Texas -- More than a thousand pounds of marijuana was found in a pickup truck abandoned on a freeway, KPRC Local 2 reported.

Baytown police said two traffic enforcement officers spotted a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck with a Louisiana license plate on the side of Interstate 10 near Sjolander Road at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

The officers stopped to be sure everyone in the vehicle was OK, but no one was inside or near the pickup truck, police said.

Investigators said the officers detected a strong, distinct odor. They looked in the bed of the pickup truck and found it filled with bundles of fresh marijuana, detectives said. More bundles were found in the extended cab, police said.

The truck was towed to the police department, where 46 bundles of marijuana were removed. Each bundle weighed about 25 pounds, officials said.

Police said the street value of the marijuana was estimated to be more than $300,000.

Detectives are working to determine who was driving the pickup truck and why it was abandoned on the side of the road.

Anyone with information is asked to call Baytown Crime Stoppers at 281-427-TIPS.
