Parallel government in Mexico sworn in
    Posted on : Tue, 21 Nov 2006 10:30:00 GMT | Author : Bharat Rathode

MEXICO CITY: Mexico is in political turmoil. The five-month-old standoff between the president-elect and the person losing the election, took a turn for the worse Tuesday as the defeated leftist candidate, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, took oath as president before several thousands of his cheering supporters.

He declared, "I take the oath to fulfill the Constitution of the Republic as the legitimate president of Mexico," as he donned the "presidential sash," and addressed his followers. Several of these people had traveled hundreds of miles, braving bitter cold to reach the capital's central plaza, or Zocalo.

Mexico has an incumbent president, Vicente Fox. The country has already elected his successor and fellow party member, conservative Felipe Calderon, who is due to be sworn in on 1 December.

Lopez Obrador, 53, a former mayor of Mexico City, alleges that fraud and dirty campaign tactics facilitated the election of Calderon. He and his supporters have vowed to prevent Calderon from taking the oath of office.

Lopez Obrador earlier set up a parallel government Monday which has a six-man, six-woman team of cabinet ministers.

Lopez Obrador had lost the election by a minute 0.6 percentage point margin in the elections. He said his parallel government would hold street protests through the next six years. There will be a cabinet functioning from the capital, which will work with donations from supporters.

President Fox said in a speech Monday the electoral process is the path that will help Mexicans in preserving a peaceful, orderly, civilized and pluralistic public and political life.

The rally and demonstrations in the capital follows a wave of political turmoil in the country, including three explosions in the capital and the continuing uncertainty prevailing in the city of Oaxaca where demonstrations are continuing for the last five months calling for the resignation of the state's governor. Federal police, which were sent to the city at the instance of president Fox, could not bring the situation back to normal. A coalition of five groups organizing the protests in Oaxaca had taken responsibility for the bombings and vowed to attack the country's 40 most-important businesses unless the federal police leave the city.

Members of Calderon's National Action Party described Monday's ceremony as a desperate act by a fringe radical.

These people are totally off-the-wall NUTS...FRUITCAKES.....and people are actually entertaining the idea of putting these dipwads in a North American Union! Combining Canada, US, and Mexico is like JD Rockefeller and J. Paul Getty teaming up with "Freddy the Freeloader"! The reason nobody believes this NAU story is that nobody can possibly believe that anybody can be SO STUPID as to merge with a cesspool of corruption like Mexico!

You are absolutely right Mountaindog. If they do rush for the border, maybe we can finally put the military on the border with arms. We will build that fence immediately.
