The Department of Defense says radiation levels were safe, and were the equivalent to less than a month’s exposure to the same natural radiation you pick up from being near rocks, soil and the sun. Steve does not buy that, “How do you take a ship and place it into a nuclear plume for five plus hours, how do you suck up nuclear contaminated waste into the water filtration system and think for one minute that there’s no health risk to anybody on board.”
With this regime it is all about the lying.......my heart goes out to these men and their families.

    Sea star die-off reaches Florence

Story and Photo by Jack Davis Siuslaw News

Evidence of Sea Star Wasting Syndrome was recently discovered at beaches near Florence, including at Heceta Head viewpoint.
Sea stars, commonly referred to as starfish, have been dying off in alarming numbers along the entire West Coast, from Baja, Mexico, to Alaska. According to reports from the Seattle Aquarium, some parts of Puget Sound and the San Juan Islands have seen population declines of up to 80 percent.

On the Oregon coast, according to CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Fawn Custer, “Last December, we had less than 1 percent of sea star wasting. By May 1, more than 5 percent of sea stars were affected. Now, I would say, in some areas, it is up to 90 percent.”

CoastWatch is an organization that monitors the entire Oregon coast via a network of volunteers. Each volunteer adopts one mile of coastline to walk and observe.

“The three things the CoastWatch volunteers are told to look for,” Custer said, “are tsunami debris, sea star conditions and marine mammals.

“If you go down to the beaches, what you are not seeing is sea stars. In April and May, we were seeing a lot of the disease. Starting in June, we were just not seeing the sea stars we normally see.”

CBC: We all felt we’re doomed from Fukushima, it’s spreading across Pacific, there will be no fish and the sea life will be dead — Professor: As we speak it’s releasing radioisotopes directly into ocean and there’s no end in sight; Reactors are not under control, it’s an ongoing disaster (AUDIO & VIDEO)

Jacques Repussard, Director General of IRSN (Office of radiation protection in France): “It is obvious that for a long time, fishery products from the Pacific Ocean will have to be monitored in a rather large area. Why? Because even if radioactive pollution is concentrated in a small part of the Pacific Ocean, behind is the beginning of the food chain. We are forced to check what’s in the tuna, and fish to derive consumption standards acceptable when in fact we don’t know how to predict. Whereas in the field of agriculture for example, research was done after Chernobyl so we are able to predict.” >> Watch the film here
CBC Radio, ‘On the Coast’, Aug 12, 2014:

    • 0:30 in — Jay Cullen, marine chemist, oceanographer and associate professor at University of Victoria’s School of Earth and Ocean Sciences: Models that actually predict the distributions of ocean currents that are carrying contaminated seawater from the March 2011 disaster, those models suggest that the highest activity of these radionuclides that can present health hazards are due and arriving on our coast now — and that these concentrations will increase over the coming couple of years. So, understanding what those concentrations are and the timing of the arrival of this seawater plume that’s affected is really important for determine impact on the marine environment and also health risks for residents of Canada.
    • 5:15 in — Stephen Quinn, host: When we first heard about the Fukushima disaster there was an immediate response of panic, as there should be of course. But I think we all thought ‘OK we’re doomed, this radioactive wash is going to spread across the Pacific and they’ll be no fish and the sea life will be dead.” That hasn’t happened, is there still a possibility of something like that happening?
    • 5:45 in – Cullen: Well, one thing that we have to keep in mind is that while the release rates of these radioisotopes were the highest and greatest immediately following the disaster — the weeks and months following March 2011 — radioisotopes are still being released to the environment and directly to the Pacific Ocean in particular, at the site as we speak. Now those rates aren’t as great as they were early on in the disaster, but the disaster is ongoing and the Fukushima site — the reactors there are not secure and under control. And so there’s no end really, at this point, that we can predict to the leaking of those isotopes into the environment. And if conditions were to change dramatically at the Fukushima site, and more problems arose where rates increased, the release rates increased to the way they were in 2011, then that’s a cause for concern and that could increase health risks here along the coast in the coming years.

Fukushima Accident — Contamination of the Environment, IRSN (at 7:30 in): The Fukushima accident resulted in the largest release of radioactive substances every observed over a short period of time… The ocean currents disperse the radioactive pollutants away from Japan and towards the coast of the United States. Nevertheless, the area close to the shore of Fukushima is likely to remain polluted… >> Watch the film here

Dr. Jacques Repussard, Director General of France’s Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), May 15, 2014 (emphasis added): To deal with the remaining issue of the contaminated water [Tepco should] limit, or even finalize, the underground leak into the sea of heavily contaminated water. >> Watch the interview here
Tim Deere-Jones, UK-based marine radioactivity consultant (pdf), ‘Fukushima Marine Radioactivity Issues‘, August 2013: The current operating marine environmental monitoring regimes in the relevant sea area are focusing on a very small number of radionuclides, principally caesium, iodine and strontium. These represent less than 10% of the total inventory of nuclides… I can see no justification for refusing to investigate the concentrations of approximately 90% of the radioactive material (all of which are capable of contaminating environmental media and delivering doses of radioactivity to wildlife and human populations)… there can be little doubt that a range of other isotopes including actinides/alpha emitters (probably 4 or 5 isotopes of plutonium, 3 of Uranium, and also Americium and Curium) will also have been released and entered into the marine environment.
Interview with Dr. Gordon Edwards, court-certified nuclear expert, Crystal Kids Radio, Aug. 8, 2014 (at 50:00 in): They have to pump about 400 tons of water [every day] down into the cores of those reactors… They’re going to have to do this for at least 7 or 8 years, maybe longer, maybe 10 years… It can’t be dumped into the ocean, it’s completely unsafe… It’s impossible for them to remove all those hundreds of radioactive materials.
Yet Japan’s Yomuri Shimbun has recently claimed: “Groundwater… is contaminated with radioactive substances released into the air from the plant at the time of the nuclear crisis.”
And according to Tepco: “400 tons of… ‘lightly’ contaminated water leaks into the sea every day.” Which gets repeated by major news outlets like the Japan Times: “400 tons of lightly contaminated water… seeps daily into the Pacific.”

Erupting Japan volcanic isle may collapse, create tsunami

    AUGUST 19, 2014

Smoke from an erupting undersea volcano forms a new island off the coast of Nishinoshima (top left), a small uninhabited island, in the southern Ogasawara chain of islands in this November 21, 2013 picture provided by Kyodo. —

Reuters picTOKYO, August 19 — An erupting volcanic island that is expanding off Japan could trigger a tsunami if its freshly formed lava slopes collapse into the sea, scientists said today.

The small, but growing, island appeared last year and quickly engulfed the already-existing island of Nishinoshima, around 1,000 kilometres (620 miles) south of Tokyo. It now covers 1.26 square kilometres (0.5 square miles).

The island’s craters are currently spewing out 200,000 cubic metres (7 million cubic feet) of lava every day — enough to fill 80 Olympic swimming pools — which is accumulating in its east, scientists said.

“If lava continues to mount on the eastern area, part of the island’s slopes could collapse and cause a tsunami,” warned Fukashi Maeno, assistant professor of the Earthquake Research Institute at the University of Tokyo.

He said a rockfall of 12 million cubic metres of lava would generate a one-metre (three feet) tsunami that could travel faster than a bullet train, hitting the island of Chichijima — 130 kilometres away — in around 18 minutes, he said.

Chichijima, home to some 2,000 people, is the largest island in the Ogasawara archipelago, a wild and remote chain that is administratively part of Tokyo.

“The ideal way to monitor and avoid a natural disaster is to set up a new tsunami and earthquake detection system near the island, but it’s impossible for anyone to land on the island in the current situation,” Maeno added.

An official from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which monitors earthquakes and tsunamis, said the agency is watching for any signs of anything untoward.

“We studied the simulation this morning, and we are thinking of consulting with earthquake prediction experts... about the probability of this actually happening, and what kind of measures we would be able to take,” he said.

Japan’s northeast was ravaged by a huge tsunami in March 2011, when a massive undersea earthquake sent a wall of water barrelling into the northeast coast, killing more than 18,000 people and wrecking whole towns. — AFP

Atmospheric transport and deposition of radionuclides released after the Fukushima Dai-chi accident and resulting effective dose, Atmospheric Environment, Sept. 2014 (emphasis added): On 11 March 2011 an earthquake off the Pacific coast of the Fukushima prefecture generated a tsunami that hit Fukushima Dai-ichi and Fukushima Da-ini Nuclear Power Plants. From 12 March a significant amount of radioactive material was released into the atmosphere and dispersed worldwide. [...] The simulation shows that the radioactive plume, consisting of about 200 PBq by adding contributions from 131I, 134Cs, and 137Cs, has been transported over the entire northern hemisphere [...] An early quantitative estimation of the amount of radioactive material discharged in the atmosphere has been provided by Chino et al. (2011) by coupling environmental monitoring data with atmospheric dispersion simulations, then updated by Katata et al. (2012) with a more detailed description of the emission from the morning of 12 March to late night of 14 March. The total amount of radioactivity has been estimated in 12.6 PBq of 134Cs and 137Cs, and 128.2 PBq of 1311. [...] The uncertainty associated with this source term has been estimated by Chino et al. (2011) to be a factor of 5 or greater.

    • As the study notes “uncertainty associated with this source term has been estimated… to be a factor of 5 or greater.” Using only a factor of 5, the result is 63 PBq of 137Cs (5 x 12.6) and 63 PBq of 134Cs (5 x 12.6) released at Fukushima126 PBq total.
    • According to an estimate by the National Academy published in 1995, “35 PBq of Cs-134 and 70 PBq of Cs-137 were released” at Chernobyl — 105 PBq total.

More from Atmospheric transport and deposition of radionuclides released after the Fukushima Dai-chi accident and resulting effective dose, Sept. 2014: Results at the global scale for the total cumulative effective dose and the three different pathways considered are illustrated in Fig. 7 [an excerpt of this is shown here on the right] […] Cumulative dose in North America reached the maximum value of 27 uSv [microsieverts] on the United States west coast with an average value of about 2 uSv over United States, Canada, and Mexico. The average effective dose in Europe results in 0.17 uSv with the highest value of about 1.5 uSv occurring in the Norwegian west coast Countries experiencing effective doses above the average value arc Spain, France, Finland, and the western Russian regions.

    • Dr. Ken Buesseler, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, June 2014: Recently specific numbers from the California Coastal Commission were released in April. What they were doing was taking the peak value in the air in San Francisco and in the water and calculating doses, if someone were to be exposed for an entire year… they came up with a dose of 5 uSv… Not to trivialize and say it’s low… but it’s much higher [in Japan].

Assistant Secretary of Defense Jonathan Woodson, June 19, 2014: Between March 16 and 19, 2011, ships supporting OT [Operation Tomodachi] were directed to remain at least 100 nm [nautical miles] from Fukushima Daiichi and greater than 150 nm from Fukushima Daiichi along a 90 degree arc, or wedge, centered on the direction of wind from Fukushima Daiichi. The standoff distance from Fukushima Daiichi was temporarily increased to 200 nm [230 miles] on March 16, 2011, as a precaution following detection of abnormally high radiation levels above the Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3 containment building by the Japanese military.
