Study: Wi-Fi radiation hurting trees
02:17 PM
A study out of the Netherlands has found that radiation from Wi-Fi networks is harming trees, causing notable variations in growth, and bleeding and fissures in barks, IDG News reports in a story published on PCWorld.com.
The city of Alphen aan den Rijn ordered the study completed by Wageningen University after local officials began finding unexplainable abormalities on trees that couldn't be explained away by a virus or bacterial infection, IDG reports.
In the Netherlands, about 70% of trees in urban areas have been showing these symptoms, as opposed to 10% of urban trees five years ago, according to IDG.
In the study, ash trees placed closest to a Wi-Fi radio developed a "lead-like shine" on their leaves caused by the death of the upper and lower epidermis. This could eventually cause the death of part of the leaves, researchers said.
The researchers are suggesting further study, IDG reports.
