CATEMACO, Mexico: March is the season of the witch at this lakeside town near the Gulf of Mexico, where visitors descend from across Mexico and beyond for spiritual cleansings.
Starting on the first Friday in March, Catemaco's annual Witches Convention offers black magic rituals performed by dozens of local witch doctors or "brujos."
Among them is Pedro Gueixpal, known as "The Power of the Tiger," who says he is a seventh-generation male witch, or warlock.
Under the glow of a giant burning star, Gueixpal circles his customer, thrashing leaves and spitting liquid and chanting words of encouragement.
Gueixpal holds an annual cleaning in the early hours of the first Friday, where for about US$100 (65), his customers can rid themselves of evil spirits and bad auras or arm themselves with spiritual protection.
People also gather along the banks of Lake Catemaco, where witches celebrate a "misa negra," or Black Mass.
At an animal sacrifice, one woman covers her daughter's eyes and lifts up a video recorder capturing the moment when a witch thrusts a dagger into a goat, held down by assistants.
