Woman Drinks Peach Martini and Ends Up in Emergency Room

COLUMBIA, SC -- DHEC officials are investigating Doc's Gumbo Grille after a woman drank a peach martini there, then went to the Emergency Room bleeding from the mouth.

Doc's owner, Doug Goulsby, tells News19 the incident happened Saturday night, when a dishwasher who didn't speak English handed the bartender a cleaner, instead of the sugar she was looking for to rim the glasses.

Three people initially took a sip of the drinks, including Sandra Couillard, whose sister was the one hospitalized.

"Automatically, it was a burning sensation," Sandra says. "My mouth was burning, my lips started to turn red and swell."

She says her sister, though, had an even stronger reaction. "She stuck her tongue out and she had places on her tongue where the skin was missing and it was bleeding."

Sandra's sister was initially admitted to the intensive care unit at Palmetto Richland in critical condition.

"She took a swallow of it and in the time it went down she said that she just started burning in her mouth and in her stomach and then all of the sudden, she started bleeding in the mouth," says the victim's husband, Bobby Hammond. "It's hard to see something like that, especially when it was definitely uncalled for."

Adds Sandra, "This is something you clean a grill with, not something you drink."

Goulsby says the mix-up was a "horrible accident" caused by a lack of communication. He tells News19 he's very concerned for the victims.

DHEC officials are investigating the case to see if this is exactly what happened.

Someone should tell Mr. Goulsby to quit hiring non-English speakers.
