Mexican Authorities Arrest Israel Mireles

El Dorado, KS (Crime Library) — Authorities in Mexico have arrested 24-year-old Israel Mireles, the prime suspect in the murder of 18-year-old Emily Sander. Federal authorities in the U.S. are now working with Mexican officials to extradite Mireles back to Kansas, to face a capital murder charge for murder, rape and criminal sodomy.

"Right now he is in custody in Mexico and we are working on the extradition for him to come back," Troy Oberley, with the U.S. Marshalls office in Wichita, said during a press conference yesterday.

Mexican authorities received several tips to the suspect's whereabouts and had been monitoring his movements since Dec. 3, but would not take him into custody until they received assurances from the Kansas prosecutor's office that they would not seek the death penalty.

"The promises that had to be made if he was apprehended in Mexico instead of Texas or somewhere in the United States is that we would waive seeking the imposition of the death penalty because of an international agreement with Mexico," Butler County district attorney Jan Satterfield said.

According to Oberly, Mireles's 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend, Victoria Martens, was also located in Mexico but refused to return to Kansas, despite assurances from the prosecutors office that they would not file charges against her.

"It doesn't sound like she wants to return to the U.S. Our main concern was that she was alive and safe," Oberly said.

EL DORADO, Kan. -- A suspect is in custody Wednesday night in the killing of a student turned porn star.

Twenty-four-year-old Israel Mireles is awaiting extradition from Mexico. Authorities say he's the man who plotted and carried out the rape and murder of 18-year-old Emily Sander, whose body was found Nov. 29 in a Kansas motel.

Sander disappeared six days earlier after leaving a bar with a man police identified as Morales.

Sander was a community college student who made headlines because of her secret double life as an Internet porn star named Zoey Zane.

18-year-old Emily Sander was a college student from Kansas who was missing for nearly a week after Thanksgiving weekend. She was last seen leaving a bar in El Dorado, Kansas about 30 miles from Wichita, with a man identified by police as Israel Mireles, 24 years old, authorities said. El Dorado police found evidence of foul play after entering Mireles' hotel room where he was living. A nationwide hunt went on to find Emily. Emily was a beautiful, young spunky girl - 5'3" at 105 pounds. She had shoulder length brown hair and blue eyes that could light up the room. She had just started college and was looking forward to getting her degree so she could move back home to Texas where all her friends and family were. Sadly, Emily's body was found 50 miles East of where she was last seen with Mireles, on Thursday, November 29, 2007 around 2:30pm near Toronto Lake in Kansas. Emily's life ended too soon. Her case was quickly updated to a homicide, and a nationwide manhunt is now under way for Mireles and his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend, who both started on the run just after Emily's disappearance, known to be heading South. Mireles was driving a 2007 Ford Taurus rental car, which turned up Tuesday, November 27 in Texas, just near where he had family. Authorities believe that he is either trying to cross the Texas border to Mexico, or have already crossed the border. He also has family ties in Mexico.

He has nothing to do with our company nor do we know any individual by that name. Now, due to your irresponsible journalism and not checking your facts before sending out this info over the news wire, you have turned this into a PR feeding frenzy for the sole purpose of creating drama to draw in viewers. We want to set the record straight. Emily was a solo nude model whose site went live September 25, 2007. She was exactly that - a solo girl model. As soon as these false facts were released, YOU the media, from your "Porn" story you ran, have sent more traffic to Emily's adult site in 2 hours than the site has received in 2 months - since the site has gone live. We ask all media outlets - please show some class and respect, for once, on a very sad and misfortunate situation, and get back to the main focus now of capturing Israel Mireles.

Arrest in Student-Porn Actress' Death

EL DORADO, Kan. (AP) — A man suspected in the slaying of a college student who led a secret life as an Internet porn performer was arrested in Mexico, authorities said.

Israel Mireles, 24, was arrested Wednesday on a Butler County homicide warrant at a relative's home in Melchor Muzquiz, Mexico, about 70 miles southwest of Eagle Pass, Texas. He was being held there pending extradition, U.S. Deputy Marshal Logan Kline said.

Mireles has been charged with capital murder, rape and aggravated criminal sodomy in the death of 18-year-old Emily Sander, Butler County prosecutor Jan Satterfield said. Investigators believe Sander's killing was planned, she said.

Sander was last seen alive on Nov. 23 when she left an El Dorado bar with a man police identified as Mireles. The disappearance of the Butler Community College student drew nationwide attention after the discovery that she also led a secret life as an Internet pornography model named Zoey Zane.

Her body was found six days later, about 50 miles east of El Dorado, as police traced the route they believed Mireles took to pick up his 16-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Martens, in Baxter Springs.

Kansas authorities received tips about Mireles' whereabouts in Mexico from several sources, and their Mexican counterparts had been monitoring his movements since at least Dec. 3, when he was charged in Butler County, she said.

Mexican authorities held off on arresting Mireles until they were assured of the legitimacy of Kansas prosecutors' case, Satterfield said.

Satterfield said her office had to promise Mexican authorities that it would not seek the death penalty for Mireles. If convicted of capital murder, he would face life in prison without the possibility of parole, she said. The extradition is expected to take about 60 days, Satterfield said.

U.S. Marshal Troy Oberly said Martens, who is eight months pregnant, was found unharmed in the same Mexican city but has refused to return to Kansas, despite an offer by Kansas authorities to assist her return.

Satterfield said prosecutors don't plan to file charges against Martens and cannot compel her to return to the U.S. because there is no arrest warrant for her.

"It doesn't sound like she wants to return to the U.S. Our main concern was that she was alive and safe," Oberly said.

Mireles became the focus of the investigation after police found large quantities of blood in an El Dorado motel room where he had been staying. Authorities have said that a bedspread that was missing from that motel room was found close to Sander's body.

Police have not released details about the cause of Sander's death, but say her Internet activity had no connection to her disappearance.

Mireles was born in Mexico, where he still has relatives, and has been living in the U.S. legally. A rental car he was driving was found Nov. 27 in Texas, where he also has relatives.
