Missing N.C. inmate, jailer captured in California

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Authorities say they have captured an escaped murder suspect and the female prison guard accused of helping him flee from a North Carolina jail.

Swain County Sheriff Curtis Cochron says 27-year-old Jeffery Czechonna Miles and 32-year-old Anita Kaye Vestal were taken into custody Monday in Vallejo, Calif. The pair disappeared from the Swain County Detention Center in March.

Miles says investigators recovered items in the jail that pointed to the area in California where they were captured.

Miles is one of six people charged with killing two men in their Swain County home in August.

Authorities say Vestal will be charged for helping Miles escape.
