EL PASO -- Students from military families who are in grades 5-12 are being encouraged to participate in a city program that celebrates the cultural diversity in the area.

To take part in the program, military children are asked to submit essays that highlight the traditions of their family accompanied by a photograph or artwork. Twenty-five submissions will be chosen to participate in an exhibit that runs through April and May at the El Paso Museum of History.

"A lot of our diversity comes from Fort Bliss and so we want to honor that diversity and those contributions to our community," said Dawn Thurmond, a cultural programs specialist for the city's Museum and Cultural Affairs Department.

Thurmond said native El Pasoans can learn a lot from the experiences and heritage of military children.

March 13 is the deadline for submissions in the program, which is funded by a grant from the Southern Poverty Law Center.

An application that contains questions for the essay is available by contacting Dawn Thurmond at 541-4280 or via email at thurmondd1@elpasotexas.gov.

Ahhhh to be one of those students! Here is my essay:

Diversity has the same root as the word divide
A house divided can not stand
We, the children of those putting their lives on the line for this country are being encouraged to aid the enemy in its defeat. We should not be a chunky stew of diversity, but remain the melting pot that takes all that is the best of all of the people on the planet, melts them down and creates an AMERICAN!
You should not ask those of us who sacrifice so much to divide our country further so that evil can conquer her.

THIS IS NOT A CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION!!!

cayla99 - I would give your essay first place. You should send it to the SPLC and the El Paso Museum of History.

Texas2Step included links in post above. It appears you have to call or e-mail to get an application. It would be funny to submit it.

The Southern Poverty Lie Center is a political group and should be kept away from Children.

It is equally inappropriate for the SPLC, ADL, NRA, Democratic or Republican Parties to approach children with their political agendas.

Good point, W. How do they get away with this stuff? Who does one complain to?

I flew into El Paso last year and quite frankly, I do not see much that was worth "celebrating." In fact, i'm curious as to what their definition of "diversity" is. I didn't hear a word of English being spoken in the El Paso airport.

Maybe I just landed in El Paso on an off night....
