Battle for GOP future right wing CIR supporters turn up heat

Battle for the GOP’s Future: Conservative CIR Supporters Turn Up the Heat

Despite all of the news coming out of Arizona and Republicans hoping to score political points with the harshest anti-immigrant bill in the country, other conservatives from around the country are beginning to step up to show that comprehensive immigration reform is in fact the right thing to do for their party and their country. The stakes in their fight against politicians like Russell Pearce and Tom Tancredo are high: will the Republican Party shut out the nation's fastest-growing voter bloc by demagoguing immigrants, or welcome it by supporting comprehensive reform?

Last week, over 150 conservative and Evangelical grassroots leaders gathered on a conference call to discuss how to get the GOP to choose the latter. Moderator and political strategist Juan Hernandez

and evangelical pastors explained on the call that reform fits conservative and Christian values; as Rev. Jim Tolle, who preaches to tens of thousands at the Church on the Way in Los Angeles, said (via the Salem News):

"We must not forget that Jesus himself was an immigrant, along with Joseph and Mary."

As Dallas Morning News columnist William McKenzie points out in encouraging the GOP to reach out to Latino Evangelicals, "strong family connections and dedication to hard work" are core conservative values -- and ones that lead straight to support for immigration reform. As Rev. Sam Rodriguez, president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, said on last week's call, you can't support "family values" if you defend an immigration system that splits families apart. So participants on the call plan to turn up the heat -- with another call at the end of April and a major event in Washington in May to get Republicans in Congress to put their votes where their values are.

Meanwhile, Hispanic Republicans in Arizona -- recently betrayed by their colleagues in the State Legislature, who passed the criminalization and racial-profiling bill SB 1070 by a near-party-line vote -- have issued a letter asking Governor Jan Brewer to veto the bill and support federal immigration reform. The group ¡Somos Republicans!, whose stated goal is "to increase the Latino Republican voting block by 100% within two years," writes:

"this bill goes against the core Republican and Conservative ideals and principles of being pro-family, fiscally responsible, and supportive of the 'sanctity of life' and for limited government. With one bill, the legislature has managed to go against the core and foundation of our ideals and beliefs and everything our Party stands for.

"As Republicans, we have a deep respect and love for our family. This bill threatens to separate and break families apart. The majority of undocumented immigrants have children that are U.S. Citizens. This bill, as written, could make it illegal for a U.S. Citizen child to even drive their parents to church."

In closing, they ask Gov. Brewer:

"If you do end up supporting this bill, then we respectfully request that you leave the Republican Party."

Strong words -- and it remains to be seen whether Brewer will heed them or not. Either way, it's clear that the battle for the soul of the Republican Party isn't over, and the supporters of immigration reform seem to be as determined as their opponents.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets.

Why dont YOU get out of the republican party? Gov Brewer is a hero for standing up for all American citizens. 80% of Americans are FED UP with all of the illegal aliens that have been allowed to stay in our country. We arent talking about a few families who snuck in to make a better life for themselves. We are talking about 30-50 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS who take jobs, use fradulant ids, rape, rob, molest, drive drunk, murder, and leech off our government and our citizens. They are smug and disrespect our laws. Just look at the way they DEMAND AMNESTY as though they are entitled to it.

Juan Hernandez was Juan McCains Latino/immigration campaign adviser, I don't know why Hayworth doesn't start making this point he could easily breeze to a win.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Shameless Piece of Propaganda, June 1, 2007
By Ron Monks "RCM" (SF Bay Area) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)

This review is from: New American Pioneers: Why Are We Afraid of Mexican Immigrants? (Paperback)

The author is a paid propagandist for Mexico..what more needs to be said about his credibility. He has several objectives. One is that Latinos who become US citizens will think of themselves as Mexicans first...as he does. His second goal, is to reclaim the lands transferred via the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Gadsden Purchase because by today's standards, the price to was too low. Russians say the same thing about Catherine's sale of Alaska. The difference is the the Mexican Congress ratified both transactions. The Russians did not. Yet there is no movement in Russia comparable to the Reconquista or Astlan movement that many, no most Mexicans subscribe to. "We didn't cross the border, the border crossed us." is the war cry these enemies of America chant.

Mr Hernandez is dishonest. He quotes statistics showing that foreign-born residents are less likely to commit crime. True! But as Hernandez knows, that statistic in only true because legal immigrants are screened before they enter so those will criminal backgrounds are barred. But Hernandez puts illegal aliens in the same category as those fine people who proudly call themselves immigrants. He, for good reason, borrows the good reputation of legal immigrants to hide the high rate of criminal activity of illegal aliens..especially those from Latin America. Let's remember that an true immigrant moves to another country in accordance with that country's laws. Anyone else cannot lay claim to the title. One who enters a country wihout consent breaks the law. If they try to get a job, that's also against the law and if they present false documents to defraud an employer that is a serious crime and it is repeated each day that the person works. Anyone who, as Hernandez does, put such bad actors in the category of immigrant is dishonest and propagandist. Besides the race card (is there any more racist group than "El Conciio de la Raza") Hernandez also plays the guilt/sympathy card..referring often to the poverty in Latin American and these miserable conditions of it's inhabitants (owing to the corruption of the goverment who pays his salary).

Don't be deceived by Hernandez's phoney sob story. Try living in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ukraine, China, North Korea, Moldova, Belarus...(I could go on)...most of the world's countries are much poorer than Mexico.

The backstory about Hernandez is political power for himself and his cronies in the DF.. He dreams of the day Mexicans will be the majority in the United States and when that day comes, the rest of us will find that our sympathies for poor Latinos and our accomodation of their refusal to assimilate, have only sowed the seeds of another Hugo Chavez style take-over on American soil.
Hernandez cannot accomplish his mission without pacifying non-latinos lest we oppose the invasion. And, he cannot pacify us unless he puts on his pattented smile and lies about the facts and true Mexican intentions. Therefore, he writes this piece of rubbish. Don't buy it...neither the book nor the smile.

    1.0 out of 5 stars bias at it's best, December 26, 2006
By BCT (Clarksville, TN) - See all my reviews

Juan Hernandez is slick and writes well... While he may be knowledgable about the issues his view is biased. He can't see past race long enough to realized that this isn't about race. It is about national security, economics, enforcing our laws and reinforcing our sovreignty. So Juan... tell us again how we only have to follow the laws we agree with... and one more time to help me understand how that makes us a better country?

This is one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. It was not well thought out or researched at all. A am an American of Mexican decent so I read it with with a very open mind. Senor Hernandez is in la-la land. He does not have a clue. Nothing he says makes a lick of sense.
