    We support the following bills

Four bills and one resolution addressing illegal immigration are among legislation introduced by state lawmakers earlier this month.

LB34 -- Introduced by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha, it would require all employers by 2011 to verify the legal status of employees by using a federal database operated by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. The checks would be conducted after hiring. Employers found in violation could have their business licenses suspended or revoked. Those who don’t perform the checks also would be barred from state contracts. People making false reports could face misdemeanor charges.

    Introduced By: Ashford

    February 11, 2009 Notice of hearing for February 18, 2009 443
January 12, 2009 Referred to Judiciary Committee 76
    January 08, 2009 Date of introduction 45

LB95 -- Introduced by Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha, this bill would require companies wanting state tax breaks to promise in writing they hadn’t knowingly employed illegal immigrants in the past five years. If the state found out they had, they would be barred from receiving the incentives and would have to repay the state for tax breaks they had received in the past.

LB335 -- It would require those seeking state tax breaks to show evidence they electronically verified the legal status of all their employees. The bill, introduced by Sen. Mike Friend of Omaha, doesn’t contain language about past activity or possible repercussions.

    LB403
-- Introduced by Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber on behalf of Gov. Dave Heineman, it would require state and local agencies verify legal status of anyone trying to collect public benefits. The bill names a host of benefits, including food assistance, unemployment, public housing, welfare and retirement. Unlike a similar bill introduced last year, it does not seek to repeal a law that allows children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition under certain conditions.

Does that mean no more dirty sweatsuits in the unicameral? :P Oh happy day, he only "served" what, 30 years or so? I still remember when he fought a speeding ticket because the Unicameral was in session and it is against the law to "arrest" a member of the unicameral while it was in session. THERE IS HOPE FOR NEBRASKA ! NOW THIS IS CHANGE I CAN BELIEVE IN!!

As of February 23, it is looking like LB 335 will be rolled into LB 403.

Illegal immigration bill advances in legislature

(2/25/2009) By James Wilcox - Nebraska lawmakers advance a compromise illegal immigration bill. Left out of the legislation is an amendment that would stop children of illegal immigrants from getting in–state college tuition rates. That measure will get a public hearing.

The bill advanced Wednesday requires public employers and contractors to check the legal status of new employees.

It also requires state and local agencies to verify the legal status of anyone trying to get public benefits like food stamps.

Senator Charlie Janssen of Fremont withdrew his amendment that would overturn a current law allowing children of illegal immigrants to pay the lower in–state college tuition rates.

Speaker Mike Flood said the amendment needs a public hearing.

Janseen said he will reintroduce it on the next round of bill debate.

Susan Smith from NAG sends us an update on the progress in Nebraska

Hello Everyone - Thank you for keeping Alipac updated on the immigration bills in Nebraska.

Okay, here's what happened yesterday with Nebraska's Immigration bills. Fremont Senator Janssen put up an Amendment to repeal the In-State Tuition and Sen White put up one to charge employers ALL costs associated with an illegal alien if caught working for that employer. Both are excellent amendments but it started a fire storm in the Unicameral. Sen Ashford threatened to kill the bill unless Janssen and White withdrew their amendments. Ashford also threatened to add amendments to increase interpreters and lawyer fees for illegal alien women of domestic violence plus a host of other recommendations he originally made. Between Sen Ashford's threats and the chamber of commerce and labor unions calling the senators - Janssen and White withdrew their amendments (and will introduce them next year) and the watered down bills LB 403 and AM413 will go to the floor for a full vote. Likely they will pass. According to some senators someone from the Governor's office is requesting the loopholes be put into these bills.....Well, let's face it, the Republicans want to keep their donors happy (businesses and labor unions) and the Democrats want to make their future voters happy. In the meantime the Americans who are paying the price for illegal immigration are being kicked around like a soccer ball. No one knows if the In state Tuition amendment was done to kill the bill totally or if it was a genuine attempt to get attached to the main bill. I'm proud of Nebraskans, we've been treated badly for the past three years and instead of giving up, we've persevered and I believe it's the only reason we stopped our state from becoming a Gateway State for illegal immigration as the Illegal Alien support groups had designated it to be. Fremont citizens were strong armed and threatened with their jobs if they got involved in their immigration city ordinance/petition. It's been a rough road, but with term limits, thankfully we were able to get rid of most of the left-wing liberal senators. We'll keep fighting. Good luck to everyone. Susan
