    Nebraska Focus Campaign

    Nebraska

Mission: Influence the Nebraska Senate Judiciary Committee to pass two bills and a resolution following a public hearing on February 27, 2008. Encourage passage of LB963 a bill that would attempt to stop illegal immigrants in Nebraska from getting benefits, or in-state college tuition, is still languishing in the Judiciary Committee

Task: Call and E-mail all members of the Senate Judiciary Committee members and the remaining Nebraska State Senators

Message Example (craft your own) To the Honorable Senator

Subject line: 287(g) Immigration Enforcement Program

I'm writing / calling to ask Senator ____ to please support LR224. We need the State of Nebraska to enforce immigration laws that they refuse to enforce in DC. Please approve of the resolution to "Encourage law enforcement agencies in Nebraska to enter into a Memoranda of Agreement with the Secretary of Homeland Security to perform immigration law enforcement functions". The 287(g) program will protect the citizens of Nebraska.

Subject line: LB1170 Employers of Illegal Immigrants

I'm writing / calling to ask Senator ____ to please support LB1170. We need the State of Nebraska to enforce immigration laws they refuse to enforce in DC. Please approve the bill, which is similar to the Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2008 that will "Create a cause of action against employers of illegal immigrants". Nebraska must take action with companies that unscrupulously hire illegal aliens, if we are to protect Americans from the negative impacts of crimes like illegal immigration and all of the associated criminal activity.

Subject line: LB963 Public Benefits and Immigration Status

I'm writing / calling to ask Senator ____ to please support LB963. We need the State of Nebraska to enforce immigration laws they refuse to enforce in DC. Please approve the bill, which Require verification of lawful presence in the United States to receive public benefits. Nebraska must prevent aiding and harboring illegal immigrants, with tax revenue that was designed to benefit the lawful residents of Nebraska.

Nebraska has two bills and one resolution that will try to make it out of committee on the 27th of February. One of these proposed bills mimics some provisions of the Oklahoma law and the resolution expresses support by our lawmakers for the 287 g program. The laws encompass creating a cause of action against employers of illegal immigrants and verification of lawful presence in the United States to receive public benefits. We need emails, phone calls and faxes to convince our lawmakers that we adamant about standing against the tide of illegal pandering. We are unshakable in our resolve not to become a sanctuary state!

We must put this information on the front burner, along with the other states that you are showcasing. If you can do this for us and want particulars of the bills, the link below will take you to the Unicameral page to input the bill number and review the specifics.

We are expecting multitudes of illegals to be bused in by supporters as was the case when we debated driver's certificates for illegals. Nebraska is rapidly becoming a defacto sanctuary state. Nebraskans, stand up now before it is too late!!

The first of three bills heard Wednesday by the Legislature’s Judiciary Committee — LB963, which would prohibit state agencies and political subdivisions from providing federal, state or local benefits to undocumented immigrants — brought Heineman and Attorney General Jon Bruning on the proponents’ side and NU President James B. Milliken and Board of Regents Chairman Chuck Hassebrook as opponents.

    * LB1170 would allow the attorney general, a political subdivision or a citizen to sue an employer who knowingly employs or recruits undocumented workers for the costs of providing public services;

    * LR224, would allow law enforcement agencies to enter an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security to enforce immigration laws.

    2009 Session

Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman is again pushing for a requirement that state and local agencies verify residents are here legally before providing them with public benefits.

On Friday, state Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber introduced a bill (LB403) in the Legislature, on Heineman’s behalf. Among the benefits covered in the bill are food assistance, unemployment, public housing, welfare and retirement.

Unlike a similar bill pushed by Heineman last year that was not approved, it would not also repeal a law that allows children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition.

Critics of the bill last year said immigrants already are prohibited under a 1996 federal law from receiving most state benefits.

Debate on illegal immigration bill heats up
Four bills and one resolution addressing illegal immigration are among legislation introduced by state lawmakers earlier this month.

LB34 -- Introduced by Sen. Brad Ashford of Omaha, it would require all employers by 2011 to verify the legal status of employees by using a federal database operated by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration. The checks would be conducted after hiring. Employers found in violation could have their business licenses suspended or revoked. Those who don’t perform the checks also would be barred from state contracts. People making false reports could face misdemeanor charges.

LB95 -- Introduced by Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha, this bill would require companies wanting state tax breaks to promise in writing they hadn’t knowingly employed illegal immigrants in the past five years. If the state found out they had, they would be barred from receiving the incentives and would have to repay the state for tax breaks they had received in the past.

LB335 -- It would require those seeking state tax breaks to show evidence they electronically verified the legal status of all their employees. The bill, introduced by Sen. Mike Friend of Omaha, doesn’t contain language about past activity or possible repercussions.

LB403 -- Introduced by Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber on behalf of Gov. Dave Heineman, it would require state and local agencies verify legal status of anyone trying to collect public benefits. The bill names a host of benefits, including food assistance, unemployment, public housing, welfare and retirement. Unlike a similar bill introduced last year, it does not seek to repeal a law that allows children of illegal immigrants to receive in-state tuition under certain conditions.

LR9 -- Introduced by Sen. Tony Fulton of Lincoln, this resolution is aimed at encouraging all local, county and state law enforcement agencies in the state to enter into agreements with federal authorities to train for and gain authorization to enforce federal immigration law.
