    South Dakota Focus Campaign

    South Dakota

    Adjourned March 17, 2008

Mission: Encourage the passage of House Bill 1121

Task: Call and E-mail all members of the South Dakota House Representatives.

    Message Example (craft your own)

Subject line: HB 1121 Employment of Illegal Aliens

    To the Honorable Representative _____,

I'm writing / calling to ask Representatives ____ to please support HB1121. We need the State of South Dakota to enforce immigration laws that they refuse to enforce in DC. Please approve the bill, which is similar to the Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2008 that will "prohibit the employment of illegal aliens and to provide a penalty therefor. No person may knowingly employ any illegal alien. Any violation of this section is a criminal offense but is punishable only by a fine not to exceed five thousand dollars for each offense." South Dakota must take action against companies that unscrupulously hire illegal aliens, if we are to protect Americans from the negative impacts of crimes like illegal immigration and all of the associated criminal activity.

Today was the final day of session. They've been SO wrapped up with the liquor license issues and educational funding, I don't know how this bill ended up. I'm awaiting updates for the final measures. I was surprised to see there had been a measure that had some viability as I had talked to Gary Hanson's office and no mention was made. It appears that it got out of committee which was a major hurdle for the most part in SD.

If no measures are passed, I plan to keep pressure on the Governor's office.
