4 Essential Prepper Skills you’ll need To Survive Any Disaster
http://ready4itall.org/wp-content/up...ns-300x246.jpg
In the preparedness community, there is a lot of talk about prepper “skills” that will be needed during a SHTF scenario. These topics usually involve things like gardening, firearms knowledge, caring for livestock and many others. These are great skills to learn, especially if you can use them in your daily life and not just in a disaster scenario.
Sometimes though, it’s easy to get swept away into creating this sort of “wish list” of skills. Although these skills are great, things like lock picking and archery aren’t going to make dealing with most disasters much easier. There are however, 4 key skills that will. These skills are already present within all preppers, they’re the reason we ARE preppers. It’s our responsibility as modern survivalists to continue to hone these skills so that when disaster does strike, we’ll be ready for it.
Hoarders are not Preppers – Organization is Life!
Organizational skills are incredibly important for any prepper. Many people living the preparedness lifestyle get the unfair label of “hoarder” attached to them simply because we stockpile many things that aren’t “necessary” in the minds of a lot of “normal” people. While typically the opinions of “normal” people don’t mean a whole lot to me, this is something we should keep in mind when it comes to stockpiling.
It’s a fine line between prepper and hoarder… and organization is how that line is defined. Organizing your supplies is important because not only will a properly organized stockpile make things much simpler during a disaster (when you’ll actually need those supplies) but organization is really the only way you can keep track of how long your preps can last.
Prepping is all about self-sufficiency. We measure self-sufficiency in terms of time. A family of four goes through 12 individual meal servings per day. If your preps have enough supplies to create 360 meals, then you are 30 days self-sufficient on food. If your pantry and preps aren’t properly organized and labeled there’s really no telling how much food you have, which foods you’re using in your food rotation and which foods you need to buy. Here are some helpful checklists and calculators to help you plan and organize your food preps better.

I Led You Here Sir… For I am Spartacus!
It doesn’t matter if you’re facing a personal disaster like a job-loss, or you’re facing down the inevitable hordes of angry mutant biker gangs after life as we know it ceases to exist; Leadership is the only way you’re going to thrive during any disaster. I truly feel that anyone that has started on the path of preparedness and self-sufficiency is a natural-born leader. It took you making an active decision to start prepping. No one made it for you, and you’re definitely not getting any support from the rest of the still-sleeping society around you. YOU had to make that decision and YOU have to be the one to walk down that road. That makes you a leader in my mind, even if you’re only leading yourself.
What a lot of us need to work on though is leading other people. In a disaster scenario, it’s unlikely that you’ll be completely alone. You’ll have family members, friends, neighbors, first responders and a whole population of unprepared people that you’ll have to deal with in some way or another. Taking leadership of your group or even just your family really could be the difference between life and death. You are probably the most prepared to handle the situation properly. This is what you’ve planned for, what you’ve trained for. Take the people with you under your wing and guide them. Do not let hysteria and paranoia take over as these emotions are cancers that can turn a disaster into a nightmare very quickly.
Here is a great pdf document that talks about the proper way to help and lead survivors of a disaster:
Helping Survivors Recover from the Emotional Aftermath of a Disaster
Situational Awareness, or in other words, you can’t bury your head in the sand You’ve probably heard a lot about a term called Situational Awareness. Typically it’s discussed alongside topics like self-defense and tactical training. While these are important skills to be learning to be sure, situational awareness goes much deeper than that. Situational Awareness is actually the reason you became a prepper. Everyone has their own story of how they started with preparedness, but there is one common thread among all of us. We’re aware that there is something wrong with the world. We’re aware that modern systems of support are extremely fragile and that there are literally thousands of situations that could cause any or all of them to fail. We’re aware that most of society is asleep at the wheel, and that if disaster ever does strike, we really only have ourselves to depend on.
Raising your level of situational awareness is critical for preparedness. As mentioned earlier, situational awareness from a self-defense perspective could literally save your life even if a large SHTF disaster never happens. Violent crimes, thefts and accidents don’t usually wait for big disasters to happen. Even outside of the defensive world though, you have to know what’s going on around you; in your daily life, in your neighborhood, in your state, in your country and in your world. All of the events of today could be spark that ignites a serious disaster, whether that’s on a personal, local or global scale.
Here are some great articles about the many levels and areas of situational awareness:
How will you know ahead of time if your company is going belly up?
A practical guide to defensive situational awareness
Using Google Alerts to stay ahead of disasters
Keepin’ it real
There are far too many people in the preparedness community that think the definition of prepping begins and ends with “Doomsday” or TEOTWAWKI. They’re apparently blind to any disaster that doesn’t involve an AR-15 or 752 ways of starting a fire. That’s not prepping… that’s daydreaming. Being realistic is probably one of the most important skills or mindsets a prepper can have.
Here are a few examples of what being a realistic prepper means:
- You don’t put thousands of dollars on credit cards to buy guns and buckets of Mountain House food
- You don’t have fanciful notions about living in “the wild” using your “survival skills” once the S hits the fan
- You don’t make plans to walk hundreds of miles to a remote bugout location when you’re 100 pounds overweight.
- You don’t spend your day trying to convince everyone on Facebook of the latest conspiracy theory
- You don’t forget about your debts because you think they’ll be wiped out when the zombies come
- You don’t think about taking over and crowning yourself king of the local Wal-Mart when disaster strikes.
- You don’t carry 2 ARs, 7 pistols, 49 knives and 3 Super Soakers filled with OC spray as your EDC kit.
Being a prepper is all about being realistic. It’s unrealistic to think that any of us have a crystal ball and know what’s going to happen tomorrow. Despite what people like Alex Jones might say, no one knows. We could face Doomsday tomorrow or we could go on for the rest of our lives without any major disasters. Most likely though, reality will probably fall somewhere in the middle. Planning for any one event is unrealistic, which is why prepping isn’t about planning for Doomsday, it’s simply about planning and being ready to survive without systems of support no matter if that means something as simple as running out of sugar or as dire as facing the end of the world head on.

Vinpocetine Boosts Blood Flow to Your Brain
Vinpocetine is widely used in Japan, Hungary, Germany, Poland and Russia for the treatment of cerebrovascular-related pathologies. The human studies indicate that it works best when problems are not too advanced. This is because nutrition works with existing situations to help guide their improvement. It is like wrinkled skin – it is best to start working on the issue before it gets too far along.......

Spices And Herbs Can Offer Safer Relief From Ills Than Pills
October 15, 2013 by Bob Livingston
Most Americans are brainwashed by the medical establishment. They believe that the only relief available to them comes from a pill.
At the first sign of a medical issue they turn to allopathic doctors who are mostly just pill pushers for Big Pharma. But there are dozens of herbs and spices that are recognized as having the ability to naturally set our bodies back aright when the natural functions get out of whack. Here are five:
Lemon balm— This highly versatile herb is useful to help anxiety sufferers, to boost the immune system, help with digestion and relieves cold sores. It also helps soothing teething pain in children. (Don’t use if suffering from hypothyroidism.
Ginger— Ginger tea or ginger ale is excellent at settling distressed stomachs. Ginger boosts the immune system and has antimicrobial and pain-relieving properties. It serves as an expectorant and diaphoretic, which makes it a great source for relieving the symptoms of colds, coughs or fevers. Cooled or cold ginger tea can be applied to burns to help relieve pain.
Tumeric— This spice helps with heart health, digestion, liver function and to fight Alzheimer’s. It can be applied to the skin to treat eczema.
Dandelion— This weed is a superfood that is edible from root to flower. Its sap can be used topically on warts. Its leaves make a great tea or salad. It helps liver health and is a diuretic.
Elder— The plant’s berries (elderberries) make a nice wine and also serve to strengthen the immune system. Some like to make a syrup from the berries to use when cold and flu season arrive.

As snug as a bug in a rug with tarps
http://www.tarpaflex.com/blog/wp-con...aedc6f7d_z.jpgPhoto credit: Ole Reidar Johansen / Flickr / CC BY-NC
You meet a better class of person on a hiking trip. Have you ever noticed how polite people are when you bump into them in the countryside? People are likely to kick sand in your face on the beach. Or you will find yourself shoulder to shoulder with some tattooed lager lout. The countryside or mountain trek, however, is invariably more civilized; the hiker who wants to connect to nature is usually a more intellectually inquisitive, eco-conscious and all-round erudite person.
The fall is a great time for hiking. The air is fresher and, once the leaves turn golden, you can find yourself in some of the most glorious orange forests. One of the most memorable fall walks I ever took was through South Wales to see Richard Burton’s birthplace in Pontrhydyfen. The winding valley road between Port Talbot and Pontrydyfen must be one of the most beautiful stretches in Britain. The landscape was so impressive that it was tempting to camp in the area overnight.
Some see fall as the season of decay but it’s really nature’s way of refreshing your senses after a stifling summer. So are you now aching for a great fall hike? All you need to do is get prepared for your trip. Most hikers automatically gravitate towards tents – part of a traditional backpack on such trips. Unfortunately, that’s why many campers find their backpacks are so heavy. Hence a typical hike through the forest usually involves multiple stops to take a breather.
Small is beautiful
http://www.tarpaflex.com/blog/wp-con...9a72e7a0_z.jpgAndy Howell / Flickr / CC BY-NC
You would do better to choose tarp for your countryside trek. It’s smaller and lightweight than your standard tent and ideal for forest camping because you can use trees and fallen logs to pitch it. Admittedly, setting up a tarp in the mountains is harder because it’s windy and exposed. There you will need extra pegging points and trekking poles or long sticks.
A tarp can shield you from your average storm as long as you pitch it low and small to minimize the rain. The only exception is during extremely testing weather conditions when, for example, a storm risks blowing you off a mountainside. Otherwise, you will be surprised at the excellent sanctuaries such tarps can provide you. Testimonials on the internet claim that a good tarp can survive a 30-minute hailstorm, and also howling winds upwards of 40 mph!
Connecting to nature
Seuss. / Flickr / CC BY-NC-ND
A tarp gives you great views because the material is fairly transparent and makes you feel more connected to the scenery around you. Also, a tarp’s open design enables you to get more ventilation inside. Condensation can be a serious problem in some tents to the extent that it can “rain” inside even on a clear night. So what are the potential hazards of a tarp cover? Insects can invade through the open sides but a simple solution is to hang mosquito netting from the crest of the tarp.
In order to get really comfortable, it’s also a good idea to carry some kind of ground cloth to lie on overnight to help you stay dry. It’s also important to feel safe under a tarp. The best way is to pitch the edges of your tarp flush with the ground so that nothing can creep up on you. You can also make a good fire near a tarp, essential during bad weather. Expensive nylon tents, on the other hand, do not react well to flying sparks and don’t concentrate the heat of a fire. If you happen to burn a hole in a cheap tarp all you have to do is patch it up with duct tape.
A good tarp can be set up in no time at all and will afford you comfort as well as the best view of your surroundings. All you need to do is find the best quality tarps for sale out there. And then you can hit the trail.

Map: Where You Don’t Want to Be When It Hits the Fan
When it hits the fan America’s population centers will explode in violence, looting, and total breakdown of law and order.
It’s a theory put forth by numerous survival and relocation specialists, and one that makes complete sense if you consider what happens in a truly serious collapse-like scenario.
http://worldtruth.tv/wp-content/uplo...images-16.jpeg
Survival Blog founder James Rawles calls them the golden horde:
Because of the urbanization of the U.S. population, if the entire eastern or western power grid goes down for more than a week, the cities will rapidly become unlivable. I foresee that there will be an almost unstoppable chain of events:
Power -> water -> food distribution -> law and order -> arson fires -> full scale looting
In his recent documentary Strategic Relocation, retreat expert Joel Skousen echoes Rawles’ warnings:
The number one threat that I concentrate on. It’s not terrorism, it’s not natural disaster, it’s not even government or war.
The major threat is population density.
Because every crisis that threatens, even a local crisis, can turn exponential because of close proximity to people who cannot help themselves. Even good people panic in a crisis…
So, where should you be when it happens?
To find the answer, let’s consider where we shouldn’t be.
Recent U.S. census data indicates that out of the 3000 counties in the United States, fully 50% of the population lives in just 146.
If you want to have any chance of surviving a wide-spread catastrophic event by avoiding the hordes that will be searching for critical resources in its aftermath, then check out the following map to get a visual reference of the areas you want to stay away from.
http://worldtruth.tv/wp-content/uplo...ion-map-11.png
When considering your retreat locations or emergency evacuation routes, be familiar with the population densities of the area you’re headed to, as well as those counties in your immediate vicinity.
In his book Patriots, James Rawles specifically points out that Highway 80, running through California, will be one of the busiest evacuation routes in the country as millions of people pour out of major cities to flee disaster or in search of food.
So, no matter where you are located, consider your proximity to high traffic thoroughfares going in and out of the city. During Hurricane Rita, which hit Houston several years ago, every major pipeline out of the city was jammed for hundreds of miles.
Interstate 45 from Houston to Dallas was bumper to bumper traffic. Normally a 4 hour trip, those who didn’t evacuate in time were stuck on the highway without food, gas, sanitation, or potable water for upwards of 15 hours.
This is why Joel Skousen suggests that those looking for strategic retreat locations or homes outside of major cities consider highway proximity. Be at least 5 – 7 miles away from any major thoroughfare, which is generally outside the range people want to venture off familiar roads, and far enough away to make any ‘walkers’ too tired to attempt the trip without ample clean water and food.
If you have no choice but to be in a major metro area during a serious emergency situation, consider strategies that can help you remain sustainable in the city even in the midst of panic.
