How to Defend Yourself Against Night Vision

It was not that long ago when opponents faced each other in night combat with nothing but moonlight, starlight, and maybe some illumination flares to guide their way. Night vision came into existence nearly a century ago and took most of the following 100 years to become widely available to the public. Today, military-quality night vision devices are relatively inexpensive and readily available on the market.
The military, police forces, and regular citizens alike have night vision capabilities. To be able to avoid detection at night, it is no longer enough to be an expert at blending in with the shadows. You must have the skills to defend against night vision.
How Does Night Vision Work
Light travels in waves with crests and troughs, much like ocean waves. The distance between one crest and the next is called a wavelength. We can see wavelengths of between 380 and 700 nanometers. These are all the colors of the rainbow. Night vision can see between 700 and 1,000 nanometers (near-infrared), with older and cheaper versions only able to see a much smaller portion of that range.
Versions with image intensifiers, like most military-grade devices, can amplify the visible light spectrum also. This is important because night vision does not just amplify faint lights that we would normally be able to see, but also can see a different range of light.

https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...ght-Vision.jpg The near-infrared and visible light ranges are significant products of sun and starlight, which then reflects off the moon. This is the “ambient” light that night vision works with.
The more sophisticated the night vision device, the greater its ability to amplify and clarify the light to provide a better image for the user.
While not a thermal imaging device, night vision is capable of seeing heated sources because heat produces infrared radiation, which becomes visible when the object is hot enough.
Low-heat sources, like the human body, are typically far outside of the visible range, but objects approaching 450 degrees Fahrenheit have enough infrared radiation to become visible.
Incandescent light bulbs also produce light in the near-infrared range because of this. Like a block of metal that a blacksmith has heated up, eventually we can see it glowing. Night vision can see this glow much sooner in the heating process.
How to Avoid Detection
Light
The first and most obvious step to take is to reduce or eliminate your light signature. It is critical to remember that light reflects, so even concentrated light sources, like laser pointers, will cause a room to glow in night vision.

If you must use a light source, use colors at the far ends of the visible light spectrum. Blue/violet, or deep red lights are still visible to night vision, but they are less efficiently amplified, making them less noticeable. Red light is also more difficult for humans to see, making it the ideal choice for discreet lighting.

Even if you have a super muffler on your generator that makes it almost silent, the heat of the exhaust will make the generator glow in night vision. The same goes for vehicle exhausts. This is especially important with any object that produces high heat and also visible light, like a cigarette. Cigarettes can make a room glow very brightly, and the cherry itself looks like a car headlight in night vision. Unlike thermal imagers, night vision makes infrared radiation more noticeable by the light it casts on walls, instead of having to see the actual heat source.
If you must use a light source or smoke, do so in a room that you have purposely fitted to block all light sources, preferably one without windows.
Always remember that light reflects, and you need to cover all escape points from the room for light, including under the door, the spaces around the door frame, vents, and especially windows.
In a SHTF scenario where you must fight armed opponents, be very cautious of your rifle barrel, especially if you are using a suppressor. Suppressors quickly get hot, and like the blacksmiths metal, the suppressors glow will be visible to night vision within only a handful of shots.

Clothing
Reflecting light creates a problem with our clothing as well. Some materials are manufactured to look brighter or use materials that reflect light well, meaning they show up better on night vision. This becomes especially problematic if you use optical brighteners in your laundry.
Military uniforms are manufactured to not have this problem, but many warfighters mistakenly use color boosting laundry detergent that ends up making them glow in night vision. Because these optical brighteners can linger in clothing after many washes, it is important that you have a dedicated SHTF outfit that has never been washed with these detergents and was manufactured to military specs.

If you must travel or operate outside, do so in the very early dawn or late dusk when you can see enough, but it is still too bright for most night vision. This will help to minimize the abilities of the night vision devices and normal human vision at the same time. Fully overcast nights are perfect, because night vision will become nearly useless without the ambient light.
Defeat Detection
If all the precautions fail and you have been detected, you need to defeat the capabilities of your opponent’s night vision. This is easier done when you do not have night vision yourself because you do not need to worry about blinding yourself in the process but can work either way.
Night vision, as we know, is designed for very low light environments, so use bright lights to blind your opponents. A bright flashlight pointed in their direction will help illuminate what you see and simultaneously overload the night vision devices because they will have to adjust to the brighter light, making the surrounding light too dark to see into.
The flashlight will naturally become a prime target of their observation, so leave it in place and use the opportunity to move to another location or bugout. If you cannot bugout, attempt to retreat to deeper and darker parts of buildings or forests where ambient light is mostly blocked.
The ability to move and fight at night has long been a hallmark of elite military units. The art of doing it without night vision has largely been lost to time. By understanding the capabilities and limitations of night vision devices, you can maximize your effectiveness while simultaneously reducing the risks of detection. Take the time to survey your gear and see what you need to be effective at night.

Three days might not seem like a long time, but having a 72-hour survival kit can help you survive a disaster.

Food supplies list
When preparing food and snacks for your food kit, try to include a variety of items like nuts, fruits and snacks.
Below is a list of food supplies for your 72-hour survival kit:
- Apple sauce pouches
- Baby food pouches (if needed)
- Baby formula and bottles (if needed)
- Beef jerky/meat sticks
- Canned chicken
- Canned soup (with a pop-top lid)
- Fruit cups
- Granola bars
- Instant coffee
- Peanut butter
- Peanut butter crackers
- Plastic cutlery and paper plates (So you don’t waste drinking water by doing the dishes)
- Powdered coffee creamer
- Shelf-stable milk
- Yogurt raisins

These items will help you maintain proper hygiene after SHTF:
- Baby wipes
- Bug spray
- Diapers
- Feminine supplies
- Hairbrush

- Sunscreen
- Toilet paper
- Toothpaste and brushes
Assorted emergency supplies list
These supplies will help with different survival needs, such as comms and first aid.

A carefully planned survival kit can help you get through most emergencies.
While it can't save you from all survival scenarios, having a kit can improve your chances of surviving dangerous situations. (h/t to TacticalGear.com.)
The ideal survival kit should be properly organized, lightweight and suitable for different environments and situations.
When preparing your kit, consider important factors such as location and common emergencies you might encounter where you live or work. While this list is not comprehensive, many of the tools below are versatile enough for most scenarios.
Cordage
For cordage, you should prep a combination of nylon rope, paracord and thread with high tensile strength. These ropes will be useful for climbing, hauling, sewing and tying needs. (Related: Master these top 5 essential survival knots.)
If you're not sure what kind of paracord to get, look for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) cordage. In terms of raw strength per mm of thickness, UHMWPE is stronger than 550 paracord, nylon and Kevlar cordage. It's also buoyant so it floats on water and is great at resisting abrasion.
Firestarting kit
Store your firestarting tools in a sturdy and waterproof container so you can stay warm, boil water and cook food even after SHTF.
You will need the following items for your firestarting kit:
- Flint and steel or a magnesium striker
- Focusing lens/Fresnel lens
- Waterproof matches
These three items are small and nearly weightless, but they can help you start a fire using different methods.
First aid kit
Keep your survival kit light by choosing only the most necessary medical supplies for your first aid kit. Many medical items can take up a lot of space, and advanced medical equipment won't be useful if you aren't trained to use them properly.
When preparing a first aid kit, include only essential items such as:
- Bandages of assorted sizes for cuts/wounds
- Iodine or rubbing alcohol
- A hemostatic agent
- A suture kit
- A tourniquet
These items usually don't need much training to use effectively during emergencies.
Fishing and hunting supplies
To ensure that you have access to food during a long-term survival scenario, you will need basic fishing and hunting supplies. Include several different gauges of line, hooks, a small net and an assortment of lures and weights in your fishing kit.
For both fishing and hunting, you can include small, sharp knives for dressing, skinning and deboning small animals and fish. If you don't have enough space in your bag, practice with your survival knife.
A multi-tool
A multi-tool will be useful for building and fixing things in emergencies.
Nonperishable and nutrient-dense food/snacks
If there is extra space in your survival bag, you should include a variety of nonperishable and nutrient-dense food and snacks. This ensures that if you have to travel to your bug-out location, you can take breaks and eat your food while figuring out where you can hunt or fish.
Choose calorie-dense snacks with protein and fat that don't spoil easily, such as beef jerky, assorted nuts and peanut butter with crackers. When packing your bag, make sure it doesn't become too heavy or awkward to carry.
A survival knife
A good survival knife is essential for any survival kit. With a sharp knife, you can dress game, defend yourself and create other useful survival tools.
Tinder
With tinder, you can have an easier time starting a fire in a survival situation. Store a handful of cotton or dryer lint in a waterproof bag and keep it in your firestarting kit.
Water bottle/canteen
You need to stay hydrated even after SHTF. While you should learn how to find and purify water from natural sources, you should also have a sturdy water bottle or canteen in your bag.
Waterproof notepad and pencil
Get a waterproof notepad and pencil so you can easily sketch maps or take notes while outdoors and in all kinds of weather.
Water purification tablets
Do not drink untreated surface water because it can make you sick. Water purification tablets are useful and you can purify several gallons of water with a single bottle of tablets.

Getting started with potting soil
A plant’s root system will thrive below the surface if you use quality soil. And when roots thrive, so will your plant.
But what makes potting soil great?
Potting soil needs to be light, with loose, well-draining soil with lots of nutrients.
These will help plants grow strong and produce flowers or fruit. Simply put, the more energy in the soil, the healthier your plants.
While you can save time by purchasing commercial bagged mixes available available at garden centers everywhere, you can also save money and keep your garden organic by making your own potting soil mix.
Knowing how to make potting soil is important if you grow produce for your own consumption or if you sell it for extra income. Making your own potting soil means you know what is in the soil used to grow your fruits and vegetables.
5 Natural ingredients for homemade potting soil
To make potting soil at home, you need five simple ingredients.
According to Jim and Mary from Old World Garden Farms, their five-ingredient potting mix is the most effective out of all the different kinds of mixes that they have tried using at their farm over the last dozen years.
This peatless potting soil mix will help keep your hanging baskets and potted plants thriving all summer.

The ratios of each ingredient are discussed in the next section, along with an exact description of each and how it works to nourish your plants.
You can create the mix in any quantity you need, so you can make enough for only one hanging basket or a lot of baskets. Just make sure you keep the ratio of each ingredient for the recipe the same.
If you are going to mix a lot of potting soil, use a large bowl or bucket, then add each ingredient one at a time into a wheelbarrow at the proper ratios.
This method is easier if you have back issues and can help prevent any pain or strain. A wheelbarrow’s height also makes it easy to mix the soil with your hands, a small trowel, or a shovel.
With a big wheelbarrow, it’s also easy to fill baskets or pots directly with your mix.
When selecting baskets and pots, remember a larger basket or pot will hold water better.
Typical hanging baskets are made of materials like coco fiber, plastic, or wire. They are available in diameters of eight to 24 inches.
Use materials like burlap, coco fiber, plastic, pressed paperboard, or sphagnum moss as liners for wire baskets.
When planting in a hanging basket, you shouldn’t overfill the basket. If it looks sparse during planting, it will eventually fill in as the plants grow bigger.
Usually, a 12″-14″ basket can accommodate three to six plants. A 16″-18″ basket can handle at least five to seven plants.
As you insert each plant into the basket, carefully press down the soil around its base to secure it.
Potting soil mix ratios and ingredients
Mixing potting soil isn’t as precise as baking so it’s fine if you are slightly off with a ratio of one or two ingredients. You just need to make sure that you stay as close as you can to the recipe to get a great mix.
Use the following ratios to make potting soil in the quantity you need:
- 4 Parts pulverized soil or topsoil
- 4 Parts compost
- 1 Part worm castings
- 1 Part perlite
- 1/2 Part spent coffee grounds
Pulverized Soil (4 parts)
A quality potting soil mix starts with pulverized topsoil.
You can buy pulverized topsoil in bulk or in bags and it is usually affordable. Make sure you get pulverized soil.
Pulverized topsoil is super-fine and crumbles easily when held.
Start with a fine soil mix and avoid garden soil, fill dirt, or other kinds of soil that are hard and will not break apart easily in your hand.
If you use soil that is too heavy, a plant’s root system will have a hard time expanding as it grows. Heavy soil also makes it hard for plant roots to absorb moisture or nutrients.
Compost (4 parts)
Compost is essential for great potting soil because it is full of life.
Good compost contains life-giving nutrients that plants can easily absorb through their root systems to grow strong. Compost also adds structure and holding power to the soil mix. (Related: Keep your garden soil healthy with crop rotation.)
In fact, compost holds as much as 10 times its own weight in water, so it can help keep your plants protected on hot days. Always use compost that is completely aged and not too coarse.
If you don’t make compost for your garden, you can also buy bagged compost.
Worm castings (1 quart)
Gardeners love worm castings because they are also important for potting soil added to hanging baskets and containers.
Worm castings are added to potting mix, and you can also use them as fertilizer for your container plants during the season.
Like compost and perlite, worm castings are lightweight and absorb water. Worm castings are great for potting mixes because they are a natural, slow-release fertilizer.
Even if you purchase a commercial bagged potting soil mix, adding worm castings will make a significant difference in the performance of your hanging plants.
Perlite (1 quart)
Perlite is a natural and organic substance and it helps make and keep the potting soil light and airy.
You need to add perlite to potting soil to help prevent the soil from compacting around plant roots.
Perlite is a pure volcanic glass that is then heated and popped like popcorn. This produces a substance that is very lightweight.
The open pores of perlite help potting soil with water retention and drainage.
Like compost, perlite can hold water several times its own weight. It keeps the finished mix much lighter than if you only use soil and compost.
Lastly, perlite has a pH of 7, which is perfectly neutral. This means it won’t affect your growing mix at all.
Coffee grounds (1/2 quart)
Spent coffee grounds are great for potting soil because they add nitrogen and other trace minerals to the mix.
Spent coffee grounds also help to hold moisture in, which helps stop the plants from drying out too quickly. As a bonus, used coffee grounds are free.
You need to use spent coffee grounds because fresh grounds are acidic. Fresh coffee grounds are more expensive if you use them in a potting soil mix, and using them will create more acidic soil.
Coffee grounds can also be added to the rest of your garden soil and flowerbeds.

(Natural News) According to data, at least 70 percent of American households have pets. Many of these pets are also treated like family so if you’re a prepper, it makes sense to pack a pet preparedness kit or bug-out bag for your four-legged best friend.
Before SHTF, make sure your cat, dog or other pet has supplies in their own preparedness kit. (h/t to PreparednessAdvice.com)
Below are some items you may want to include in a pet emergency kit:
Pet food for at least two weeks, dog bowls
You need at least two weeks’ worth of pet food so you have enough to feed your dog if you are dealing with a long-term SHTF scenario.
Buy folding bowls that are easy to pack. Remember that your dog also needs water to drink.
Leash, harness, carrier and transport case
You don’t want to lose your pet in the panic after SHTF so make sure you have a leash, harness, carrier and transport case for your dog or cat.
Dog shoes/paw protectors, warm clothes
If you live in a state that gets cold, get warm clothes and dog shoes or paw protectors for your pet. This will help protect them from harsh weather conditions or rough terrain.
Extra pet medications
An old dog or a pet with health issues will need at least two weeks to a month’s worth of extra medications. If you’re packing for a trip or an emergency, let your vet know so they can help you stock up on pet meds.
Your pet’s tag or collar should also include notes on what medications they’re on. If you can’t get extra medications for your pets, make a list of vets nearby so you can go to them if you need more after SHTF. (Related: Do you have a first aid kit for your pets?)

Did you know that you can save your dog with pet CPR? Before disaster strikes, learn how to do pet CPR properly.
You also have to prepare a pet first aid kit with items you need to provide emergency medical aid for your pet if there’s an accident. The kit will include similar items in a first aid kit for humans, like antiseptic cream and bandages for treating wounds.
But your pet first aid kit should also come with additional items that are pet-specific, such as:
- Anti-worm medications
- Flea and tick control items
- Flea combs and tick tweezers
- No chew bandage
Pet bed, toys and blankets
Like humans, pets will need comfort during a stressful disaster scenario. If you are bugging out to a safe location, bring their bed, toys and blankets so they can feel at home.
Pack some of their old toys and items so you don’t take away their current toys.
Poop bags or kitty litter
When SHTF, you still need to keep things clean and sanitary to prevent sickness among your family and pets. Bring poop bags and kitty litter for pets so your campsite stays clean.
Recent printed pet photos
If things get too chaotic, you might lose your pet when SHTF. This is why you need recently printed pet photos so it’s easier to look for them and ask people if anyone has seen them in the area.
The printed photos of your pet should also include any identifying marks, like unusual fur coloration or scars.
Copies of pet medical records
If you need to temporarily leave your pet at a shelter, you will need updated copies of your pet’s medical records.
Copy of feeding schedules and any behavioral issues
If you have to ask a family member or friend to keep an eye on your pet for a couple of days, give them a printed, detailed care schedule and notes to help them take care of your pet.
Pet microchip information
Microchip information is important and there are a lot of databases out there. Check who your animal is registered with and if your pet doesn’t have a microchip yet, get them one before SHTF so you can find them easily.
Print out the microchip information and put a tag on your pet’s collar saying they’re microchipped.
Regular vet/emergency vet contact information
Get the contact information of your regular vet and an emergency vet.
If your pet gets injured, friends, family members or boarding shelters can quickly check who to contact. Make sure emergency contacts also know that they’re your emergency contacts so they can expect a call if something happens.
List of other emergency contact numbers
If something happens to you, your pet documents should also include a list of family, friends, shelters and boarding centers that could take your pet in an emergency.
You also need an updated list of shelters that take pets so you don’t waste time calling around.

Alternatively, you can make it at home.One pound of activated charcoal costs $12 to $15 at the grocery, while making your own costs less than $1 per pound. You can make your charcoal to activate, but the extreme temperatures it takes to burn hardwood down to charcoal make it very time-consuming and energy-intensive. Instead, it's better to buy and use a 20 lb. bag of hardwood charcoal.
Supplies you need to make activate charcoal
Here are the items you will need to activate charcoal at home.
Calcium chloride/Pickle Crisp
If you're making a lot of activated charcoal, it's more economical to buy calcium chloride in larger tubs. Alternatively, you can use the Ball Pickle Crisp sold at grocery stores, but it might be more expensive. If you don't have calcium chloride, you can use lemon juice as an alternative.
Charcoal
You can use your preferred brand of hardwood charcoal briquettes. You will need pure hardwood charcoal, so don't get charcoal that has been soaked in lighter fluid or has other additives.
Glass jar
If you don't have a glass jar, use a non-aluminum mixing pot with a solid lid or a regular canning jar. This is important because mixing the calcium chloride causes a reaction that releases heat, and aluminum is a reactive metal. You will also need eye protection such as safety goggles; cheesecloth or white sheet; cookie sheet or flat pan; water and measuring cup; and storage container for the finished activated charcoal
Activating the charcoal
Follow the steps below to activate charcoal.
- Get your charcoal and powder it. Do this by smashing it carefully with a hammer or using a mortar and pestle. Transfer the powdered charcoal to a glass or stainless steel bowl.
- Make a 25 percent solution of calcium chloride with water. Note that one hundred grams of calcium chloride should be dissolved in 300 mL of water. This equals 3.5 ounces of calcium chloride and 1.3 cups of water in ounces.
- Make a paste by carefully adding the calcium chloride solution to the powdered charcoal. Stir until you have a spreadable paste. Drain any leftover solution.
- Let the mixture dry in the bowl for 24 hours.
- Spread the dried material on a clean white sheet or several pieces of cheesecloth. Don’t use materials with detergents or scents.
- Rinse the dried material with clean water and catch all the water that goes through. Filter this water through a coffee filter to recover the carbon you would otherwise lose.
- Put the coffee filter on a cookie sheet with the rest of the activated charcoal.
- Bake the rinsed charcoal at 250 F for 30 minutes or until all moisture is gone.
- Once done, cool and break apart the charcoal. Store it in an airtight and waterproof jar.

Clean water is something that many people, especially non-preppers, take for granted. When dealing with an emergency, you will have one less thing to worry about if you know that you have access to clean drinking water, so it's essential to learn how to find, store and purify water for your stockpile.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends storing at least one gallon of water per person and pet, per day, for a minimum of three days. However, preppers know that you might need more than that when SHTF.
A more reasonable recommendation is that you store enough water for at least two weeks. That means if you are prepping for two people, you would need 28 gallons. This much water should cover your basic needs for drinking, food preparation and hygiene. (Related: HRS solutions: Must-have survival drinks for your pantry.)
DIY water storage
To save money on water storage, you can start your stockpile by filling thoroughly washed plastic or glass containers with tap water and sealing them tightly.
Follow these steps to store water for emergency use:
- Thoroughly clean plastic bottles and jugs with dishwashing soap and water. Rinse them well to get rid of any residual soap.
- Sanitize the containers by adding a solution of one teaspoon of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to one quart of water. Make sure that the bleach you are using is fresh.
- Swish the sanitizing solution in the containers to cover all interior surfaces. Sanitize the lids and caps as well.
- After sanitizing the containers and caps, thoroughly rinse out the bleach solution with clean water.
- Wear latex or nitrile gloves to maintain sanitation and avoid contaminating the caps by touching the inside of them with your fingers. Fill all sanitized containers to the top with tap water.
- Add two drops of non-scented liquid household chlorine bleach to the water, then tightly close the containers using the original caps.
- Label the outside of the bottles with the date using a permanent marker.
- Store the containers in a cool, dark place.
As a precaution, rotate your water supply every six months to a year. Dump the water, re-sanitize the jugs and start the process all over. If you have the space, mark the jugs as "non-potable" and save the water for non-drinking emergency purposes.

Even if you're not a prepper, you should think about stocking up on emergency foods for different survival scenarios. This is important because fueling your body with nutritious foods and staying hydrated during a crisis can differ from your regular diet during "normal" times.Below are some suggestions on what you should have in your survival stockpile before disaster strikes. Consider the nutritional value of the food you're buying
If the emergency is disease-related, such as during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, you and your family need to eat nutritious foods that will help support your overall health. And because you'll have a limited supply in your emergency preparedness kit or survival stockpile at home, the higher-quality foods you eat the better.
Barry Swanson, professor emeritus of food science at Washington State University, has advised that you will need calories during "a disaster or an emergency."
Swanson added that your diet should also include foods rich in nutrients and fiber because they will help "keep your diet normal." (Related: Survival essentials: Best budget-friendly foods for prepping.)
But that doesn't mean you can only eat bland foods when SHTF. Plan ahead and make a list of non-perishable items that you can use to make healthy, tasty meals during emergencies.
Below are some items for your survival stockpile:
Bottled water
You should drink enough water every day to stay hydrated. Ensure that you have at least a three-day supply of clean drinking water, and remember that you need at least one gallon per person daily.
If you are normally active, you can prevent dehydration by drinking at least a half gallon of water each day. You can use the other half gallon for cooking and washing.
Don't forget to stock up on clean water for your pets and livestock.
Canned fish
Canned food such as chicken, tuna, turkey or salmon will usually last at least two years in the pantry. Canned fish is also a great source of essential protein.
If you're stocking up on canned food, make sure you have a manual can opener and an extra one for emergencies.
Canned fruits and vegetables
While fresh produce is great for a balanced diet, canned fruits and vegetables are a great alternative when dealing with survival scenarios.
They can provide you with essential nutrients, making them an ideal hurricane food or natural disaster option.
Alternatively, you can stock up on freeze-dried fruits and vegetables if you want to add more variety to your stockpile. Compared to canned options, freeze-dried fruits and vegetables can last for several years in your stockpile if stored properly.
Nuts and trail mixes
Nuts and trail mixes are high-energy foods. They're also a convenient and healthy snack for different emergencies like a hurricane or tornado.
Buy vacuum-packed containers, which prevent the nuts from oxidizing and losing their freshness over time.
Peanut butter
Comforting and a great source of energy, peanut butter is full of "good" fats and protein. Unless the jar indicates otherwise, you don't have to refrigerate peanut butter after opening.
