Many emergencies and disasters are unavoidable. And while it's impossible to prepare for all natural disasters and various emergencies, preparing before things go south is the most effective way of dealing with your worries about future survival scenarios.
Even if you're a newcomer to prepping, you can prepare regardless of your budget. Don't feel overwhelmed and check out the tips below to start preparing before SHTF. (h/t to RethinkRural.RaydientPlaces.com)
Make an emergency preparedness plan
Before you buy crates of food supplies or prepping gear, start with your emergency preparedness plan.
An emergency preparedness plan will detail important questions and answers if your family has to deal with a survival situation.
Here are some questions to answer when making your plan:
Who will bug in or bug out?
Obviously, the answer is everyone in your family. But do you have pets?
If so, you also need to stock up on supplies for any pets such as pet food and a pet first aid kit.
How will you communicate?
In most survival scenarios, cell phone towers can become overwhelmed by high call and text volumes. While preparing, you should make sure you don't always count on them. Get walkie-talkies or teach the family how to use a ham radio.
Communication is crucial when facing a survival situation if you want to make sure that your family is safe.
Where will you meet?
Choose a safe meeting spot that everyone can get to after SHTF.
If you think other family members might be in a location far from home if they are stuck in an emergency, choose different locations in different directions. This ensures that if location A is unsafe, the group can meet in location B instead.
Stockpile enough food and water for your family
Next, make plans for your survival stockpile of food and water. If you are worried about going over your budget for daily needs, whenever you buy groceries get a couple of cans of non-perishable food items and one or two gallons of water.
And don't waste money on things no one likes. Only store what you eat, then eat what you store to avoid food spoilage and wasting money.
The amount of food and water that you need for your stockpile will vary based on your family size, so adjust your calculations accordingly.
If you're not sure where to start, here are some things to stock up on:
- Baby food pouches and jars (If you have a young baby or toddler)
- Bags of rice
- Beans and lentils
- Canned soups
- Canned fruits and vegetables
- Canned meats
- Condiments
- Cooking oils
- Formula or powdered milk (If you have a young baby or toddler)
- Freeze-dried fruits and vegetables
- Honey
- Nut butter (Such as peanut or almond butter)
- Oatmeal
- Snack and protein bars
Learn useful survival skills
You also need to develop survival skills so you can survive even if you lose your gear when disaster strikes.
Because there are just as many skills as emergencies to prepare for, you can choose the most useful ones such as:
- Bushcraft
- Cooking from scratch
- Firestarting
- Fishing
- Foraging
- Home gardening
- Hunting
- Woodcraft
Prepare bug-out bags for your family
Some emergencies may be so severe that the only thing you can do is evacuate or bug out and leave your home. If you think this may happen in the future, prepare a bug-out bag (BOB).
Usually, a BOB contains items that will help you survive an emergency or disaster for at least 72 hours. (Related: Creating a bug-out plan: Essential steps for emergency evacuation.)
Preparing your bag ahead of time will save you time and effort when SHTF. Store the BOBs in a safe and easy-to-access location.
When preparing your BOB, include basic items such as:
- Food and snacks
- Extra clothing
- First aid kit and medicines
- Hygiene kit
- Lights
- Shelter
- Water

The common cold and the flu have been around for a long time. Today, people use preventative measures as well as over-the-counter remedies to stay healthy, but what did our ancestors do before pharmacies and modern medicines were commonplace?
One of the most commonly used flu and cold remedies was elderberries. In fact, it’s still used in medicines today. You can buy elderberry-based cough syrups, which have been proven to reduce the severity of the common cold or flu, in your local pharmacy.
How Can Elderberries Help?
Elderberries (Sambucus nigra), which are native to a few parts of Europe and the US, come from a flower bush that produces small, black/purple fruits, similar to mulberries. They taste something like a strong blackberry.
Please note that the leaves of elderberry bushes can be poisonous, so don’t eat them or use them for tea. Elderberries need to be cooked prior to use or they can cause intense vomiting and diarrhea.
This highly prized… premium purple powder… belongs in your “just in case” medicine cabinet.
Numerous studies back up claims that the elderberry contains anti-viral compounds, which prevent you from becoming infected in the first place – and shorten the duration and severity of the illness when you do get sick.
Grow Your Own
Order an elderberry bush from a reputable nursery and be certain you are getting Sambucus nigra.
One of the great things about elderberry bushes is that they are very easy to grow. They tolerate poor soil and very wet soil. However, one thing that elderberry bushes love is water. If you have hot, dry summers, you will need to give these little beauties water on a weekly basis.
If you want to plant more than one, put them about 3 feet apart, in rows about 12 feet apart. You should plant at least two bushes (for cross-pollination). For best results, do nothing to the plants for the first two years. Do not prune them and do not remove the berries. Just let them be their own wild selves for a short time, and then you can prune them and use the berries as you wish. Prune in the early spring and remove dead branches.
They will just give a few berries their very first year, but by the second year, you will have plenty. Berries ripen somewhere between the middle of August and the middle of September, which gives you just enough time to mix up some elderberry syrup!
Elderberries Have Roughly 5 Times As Many Anthocyanins As Blueberries!
How to Make Your Own Elderberry Syrup
Of course, people use elderberries for things other than cold medicine. There are recipes for elderberry wine, elderberry “marshmallows” and even elderberry pie. Today, however, we are going to look at a quick and easy way to make elderberry syrup.
There are probably as many recipes for this syrup as there are for meatloaf. This one is very basic and simple, but gets the job done. Tastes pretty good, too!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of dried elderberries or 1.5 cups of fresh berries
- 5 cups of water
- 2 tablespoons of ginger
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon of clove powder
- 1 cup of honey
- 16-ounce glass container with lid (Mason jars are a good choice)
Instructions:
- In a medium-sized pot, add all ingredients except for the honey
- Bring to a boil, and then cover.
- Reduce heat to simmer
- Allow to simmer for at least 45 minutes or until the liquid is reduced to about half
- Remove from heat and allow to cool until lukewarm
- Mash the berries a bit, and then strain from pot into a bowl
- Add honey and mix well
- Pour into container of your choice
A standard dose is 1 teaspoon for children 12 and under every 3 to 4 hours. Adults can take 1 tablespoon every 3 to 4 hours.
Some people recommend giving children 1 teaspoon each day (and adults 1 tablespoon) during the flu season for preventative measures, but this is a matter of choice, as there are no studies showing this will prevent you from catching a cold or flu. That being said, it certainly wouldn’t hurt anything if you decided to try it!
This syrup is best when stored in the refrigerator and will last for several months. You can also freeze it in ice cube trays, and then seal them in plastic bags for later use. Elderberries also can be frozen if you want to make fresh batches during the winter months.

Do you have enough food supplies in your stockpile? If you're unsure, start prepping now so you have enough food for your family when SHTF and it's time to bug in.

What to stock up on before SHTF
Here are some survival foods you need in your survival cache if things go south.
Note that the storage foods on this list meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Require no special tools, such as a wheat grinder.
- Only requires cooking.
- Contains essential nutrients or are calorically dense
- With a 25- to 30-year storage life.
- Are difficult, or almost impossible, to produce on your homestead.
Package your food supplies in containers appropriate for long-term storage such as #10 cans, or Mylar bags inside of sturdy plastic buckets.
Lastly, don't forget to stock up on enough clean drinking water for the whole family. You have enough for drinking, cooking, cleaning and maintaining proper hygiene.
Grains
Grains will provide essential nutrients and calories while your family follows a survival diet.
Additionally, stocking up on different grains will diversify the nutrients in your diet. Remember that some grains are easier to prepare than others.
Many grains can be soaked, cooked and eaten without grinding into flour. If you own a grain mill, your menu potential can now include bread and tortillas.
Some grains, such as barley, corn, rye, spelt and wheat, can also be sprouted to increase nutrition and make them edible even without cooking.
Oats are one of the world’s most widely known superfoods. Having a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast can help you feel full longer, which is a great asset when food is, unfortunately, being rationed during a survival scenario.
Rolled oats are also easy to prepare and can be eaten without cooking by soaking in water or milk and some fruits overnight. (Related: Survival essentials: Best budget-friendly foods for prepping.)
Beans and legumes
Dry beans and legumes are crucial to follow a balanced survival diet.
Beans contain complex carbohydrates, fiber and protein, making them a powerhouse of nutrients.
Combine beans with a grain like rice so they can provide your body with all the essential amino acids and form a complete protein. Beans are easy to prepare and require only soaking and cooking, along with a dash of salt to make them edible.
Like grains, sprouting beans increases some nutrients. A study on the effects of sprouting kidney beans showed that there was an increase in vitamin C of 81.56 percent, niacin 13.47 percent, riboflavin 11.2 percent, thiamin 6.63 percent, vitamin B6 2.02 percent, protein 1.7 percent and folate 1.4 percent.
Stockpile different beans to diversify the diet and the nutrients in your survival meal plan. Aside from being a good source of calories, fiber and protein, each type of bean has unique vitamins and minerals.
For example, black beans are rich in folate (vitamin B9), manganese, magnesium, thiamine (vitamin B1) and iron. Meanwhile, chickpeas are full of folate (vitamin B9), manganese, copper and iron.
Lentils cook quickly and are a natural source of copper, folate (vitamin B9), manganese and thiamine (vitamin B1).
If you're undecided about how much beans to stockpile, some preppers recommend storing at least 60 to 75 pounds of beans per person per year.
One #10 can of beans weighs about five pounds, and the average adult would require 12 to 15 #10 cans of beans for one year.
Dehydrated and freeze-dried vegetables
Having a variety of vegetables is ideal, but stocking up on dehydrated and freeze-dried vegetables means you have one less thing to worry about because they will last longer than fresh produce.

Bushcraft is the knowledge and practice of using almost entirely non-man made resources to survive and thrive in a natural environment.
While bushcraft almost always does involve the use of human-made tools (such as knives or hatchets), these tools are used to help the bushcrafter utilize non-man made resources.
For example, someone who truly practices bushcraft may use a knife or hatchet to help them build a shelter out of poles, sticks, and tree boughs gathered from their environment instead of using a tent or a tarp for their shelter instead.
Contrary to what many people think, bushcraft and survival are not necessarily the same thing, although they can overlap. For example, bushcraft skills can be immensely valuable to somebody in a survival situation, but just because somebody is practicing bushcraft in the woods doesn’t mean that they are in a survival situation. Conversely, people who find themselves in a survival situation may have no knowledge of bushcraft skills.
In other words, a person who specializes in bushcraft is more self-reliant than a traditional ‘survivalist,’ but they still rely on certain tools. However, these tools may very well disappear and go out of stock in the stores the next time a major crisis hits.
Let’s say that a major disaster on a scale even greater than the previous pandemic hit. As before, people flock to the stores in a frenzy and purchase as much supplies and necessities as fast as they can.
In a matter of days, the store shelves are stripped clean. While food, toilet paper, and personal hygiene items may go first, it won’t take long for tools favored by bushcraft practitioners to get bought up too.
Compass

In their everyday lives, people typically know their sense of direction via compass apps on their smartphones. But what will happen in a grid down disaster or EMP attack where we can no longer use our phones?
That’s right: people will be forced to use actual compasses instead of their smartphone apps, and that’s why it won’t take long for them to fly off the shelves.
Hatchets
One of the most important tools for someone who practices bushcraft (behind only the knife), is the hatchet.

Knives

Knives are also items that are heavily valued by virtually everybody for their versatility in everyday lives. People use knives to prepare food in the kitchen, for outdoor projects, and just as general handy tools to have for random everyday items.

Forced to take the suffering child home and manage their fever, we began to realize that doctors didn’t hold the golden key to the medicine cabinet. It turns out we have just as much power as the doctor when it comes to preventative medicine and even healing. Sometimes, we have even more power!
Through a combination of digging out lost skills and the radical availability of raw materials, people have begun to stock their own medicine cabinets. Even easy to buy OTC meds are being replaced by safer natural methods of dealing with pain, infection and healing in general. You might think this kind of work belongs in a lab, but you’d be mistaken. In fact, we are going to go over some of the medicines you should know how to make at home.

Tools Of The Trade
Capsules
Many homemade medicines for internal use can be produced and made in capsule form. These capsules are readily available, and are great ways to transport things like essential oils.

Once the mixture is completely cool it will be ready to use. You can add things like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and other spices to your syrup as well.

Willow Pain Reliever Fever Reducer
Containing the active ingredient of aspirin – salicylic acid – willow bark is a legitimate pain reliever and fever reducer.
Not only is the salicylic acid in there; its also pretty easy to get out. Willow bark should certainly be a means of pain relief that you create at home.
- The bark from younger branches will have more salicylic acid than bark from the trunk.
- Start by stripping some bark off these small branches.
- Gather yourself a nice bundle of bark that is about 3 inches in diameter when gathered together, loosely packed.
- The best practice is to let the bark dry out a bit. If you need the medicine now you can make it immediately, but it will produce more if its allowed to dry out.
- Add 1 tablespoon of bark for every 1 cup of water.
- Add the bark to boiling water and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Allow to cool, and drink with some food as the acid can be a stomach irritant
Fire Cider
Fire cider is a powerful mixture of raw apple cider, honey, lemon, chilis and a whole bunch of mean roots like onion, garlic, horseradish and maybe even some turmeric for good measure.

Immune Boosting Tea
While its hard to find an immune boosting medicine on the market, you can buy things like Emergen C or Airborne to help boost immunity. However, you are probably a short distance away from the plants you need to make a quick immune boosting tea.
When it comes to immunity Vitamin C is king. We used to think that oranges were the holy grail of natural Vitamin C. The truth is a single orange only contains about 70 mg of Vitamin C. To really get the most out of this Vitamin you want to take about 1,000 mg a day! More if you are sick.
A better source is pine needle tea. A variety of pines can be used for this tea, and you need only pick the youngest needles, wash them thoroughly, then boil 1 tsp if chopped needles in a cup of water for 20 minutes. Strain and you are ready to drink.
Unlike an orange, a cup of this pine needle tea contains nearly 350mg of Vitamin C and can be had several times a day.
