To heat the oven: Build a fire inside and keep it going for about three hours.[/COLOR]

My husband and I first spied an outdoor bread oven while strolling through our neighborhood. The beautiful brick dome was situated at the end of an overgrown driveway. It was so intriguing that we knocked on the house’s door and met the oven’s owner – a frail Italian granny. She graciously shared her story, which was inseparably intertwined with the oven.
“We came here for the coal mines in the ’20s,” she said, “You couldn’t get good bread here, not like in the old country, so we built this oven. All the neighborhood ladies would get up early to start their bread dough, and I’d be up by 4 to fire the oven. It took five hours to heat that oven, and it was big enough to hold all the loaves. We’d drink tea, gossip and bake our bread. During the summers, some of the men went up to the mountains to herd sheep. I’d go up there to make them bread. I built ovens up there out of clay dirt and baked bread every few days. Those men could eat a lot of bread!”
The woman’s fascinating story motivated us to research outdoor bread ovens, with the goal of building one for ourselves. Clay is readily available at our place and was our material of choice. After some serious research and with help from the best adobe-oven-making book ever, Kiko Denzer’s Build Your Own Earth Oven: A Low-Cost Wood-Fired Mud Oven, we gave it a try. Using Denzer’s thorough, friendly instructions, I built an oven in our yard, several ovens for the local school district and one for a mountain-man rendezvous. This year, my husband and I built the more refined model covered in this article out in our pasture.
This oven only takes about three days to build, start to finish, working a couple of hours a day.
A Fine Foundation
Although you can build them on the ground, we decided to raise our new adobe oven to a convenient working height. For simplicity, we built a foundation for the oven using concrete blocks held together use a construction adhesive such as Liquid Nails©. Since Liquid Nails isn’t technically a load-bearing mortar, you won’t want to build your base more than about three blocks tall. Depending on their size, it will take about 30 concrete blocks to build the foundation’s perimeter walls. Once the adhesive has set, fill the container with rubble (broken pieces of concrete, big rocks, etc.). Top the rubble with gravel and sand, to about 8 inches below the rim. Next, add a 5-inch layer of vermiculite or perlite for insulation. And, finally, top this layer with sand; tamp it level with the top of the blocks (see Figure 1).
Make a bed for fire
You will build your oven’s fires on a layer of firebrick. Place the bricks on the sand and kiss them together, tapping with a rubber mallet to straighten. If they don’t go down perfectly, just pick them up and try again. On our oven, we elected to cover the whole top of the foundation with firebrick.
Domes made of sand
Our base was about 4-feet square, so we used a string and pencil to scribe a 28-inch-diameter circle for the inside of the oven and a 42-inch-diameter circle for the outside. You will want to adjust those values somewhat if your base has different dimensions than ours. Just be sure to leave enough space to allow 7-inch-thick walls on your completed oven (see Figure 2).
Shape a lovely dome with wet sand and be sure that it fits inside the smaller of the two circles. Take your time to make it gorgeous, and spray lightly to keep the sand wet. This shape will create the interior of your oven. Before you go on to the next step, measure the exact height of the dome and make a note of it. You will need this figure later.
Play in the mud
The ideal mud mixture for an adobe oven is 25 percent clay and 75 percent sand. Shovel three measures of sand onto a tarp and add a single measure of clay initially. If your clay consists of a clay/soil mix, add proportionally more to the sand. Mix the materials together thoroughly – we used our bare feet. Periodically pick up the corners of the tarp and roll the adobe to the center and mix again. Continue adding and mixing components until the proportions look and feel right. You should be able to hear the sand “bite” as you roll the mud in your hand. Periodically test the mud by making a golf-ball-sized sphere and dropping it from your waist onto a hard surface. If it breaks apart, the mud is too dry, if it flattens significantly, it is too wet. Add small amounts of water or clay/sand to correct for high or low moisture content.
The first layer
Place brick-sized lumps (approximately 3 inches wide) of adobe around your dome, building up as you go. After completing one row, add another right on top of it. Continue until you have completely covered the sand dome with a 3-inch thick coating of mud (see Figure 3). If the adobe slumps some during the process, use an old knife and slice off the excess adobe on the bottom. Use a short piece of 2-by-4 to “rock” over your adobe to smooth and adjust any distortions in the form.
Let the first adobe layer set overnight. If it stiffens up nicely, you should cut the door before building the second layer. If it is still quite soft, you can wait until the second layer is done to cut the door. If the mud seems too soft and wet, your mix may need more clay. For our oven, we realized our mix was not drying hard and it needed clay, so we pulled the whole thing off and remixed the adobe. It was an easy fix.
The second layer
Mix adobe for the second layer as before, but add some chopped straw to it, to hold it together and help prevent severe cracking. Chop your straw with a weed-whacker in a wheelbarrow or trash barrel and mix the chopped straw into your adobe as you make it. The second layer is built just like the first, up and over. Use the 2-by-4 to rock over the form once more (see Figure 3).
Finishing touch
Mix up some wet, soft adobe, using more clay than sand and very finely chopped straw, which you make by running the weed-whacker longer in the straw in your container. If you have some pretty clay, perhaps red, use it for your plaster. Enjoy spreading it evenly over the entire surface of your oven.
Open the door
In North America, traditional ovens tend to have doors that are 63 percent of the height of the oven’s interior, so multiply the height of the dome by 0.63 and cut your door that high, using a large kitchen knife. (Be sure to make it wide enough to allow convenient access.) Remove the sand, using a trowel and your hands. Gently scrape the sand from all the interior surfaces and brush it off the brick floor (see Figure 4).
Close the door
Trace the shape of your oven’s opening on a piece of paper, and cut a piece of wood to fit the shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect but try to get it close. Fashion a handle from a scrap piece of wood or buy one and attach it to the door.
Let it dry
It can take weeks for your oven to dry, but you can speed the process by building small fires to help it along. Some cracking is to be expected during this process and as you use the oven, bit if large cracks develop, fill them with damp clay.
Now, bake some bread!
Light a large fire built with sticks and small pieces of wood inside the oven. When it dies down, build another. Continue this process for about three hours. While it is heating, make your dough.
Any good bread recipe will work in your adobe oven. (See Adobe Bread Recipe for one suggestion.) Use an oil-free recipe for a crispy, European crust. Let the bread rise, punch down, and form into round or long loaves. For the final rising, place loaves on cornmeal-covered cookie sheets.
Remove all the ashes and unburned wood from the oven. Nail or screw a rag to a stick, wet the rag, and “scuffle” out the bricks so they’re clean. Let the oven sit or “soak” for about 10 minutes. Wet an old piece of towel and wrap the door with the towel inside. In a few minutes, remove the door and towel.
Gently place a risen bread loaf on your peel (the shovellike tool for moving bread). Put the peel into the oven and with one sharp jerk forward, slide your bread right onto the hot bricks. Repeat with all your loaves (see Figure 5). Close the door, using the wet towel as a seal. Let bread bake according to your recipe, but pay attention with your nose and intuition to know when it’s done.
You will be tempted to cut into your loaves immediately, but let them sit and cool for 10-15 minutes. Your bread finishes baking as it cools. Now you can cut it or tear it, add butter or other toppings, and enjoy crisp-crusty European bread, fresh and perfumed, from your own adobe oven.
Cooking other foods
You can cook anything in your oven, including meats and vegetables, pies and pizzas. For pizza, prepare your pies to put into the hot oven right after you scuffle out the ashes; don’t soak the oven. For meats and vegetables, put in a covered pot after the soak. Remove the cover the last 15 or 20 minutes. Cook pies in a pie tin, but try to avoid fruit spilling over onto the brick floor. Of course, anything you wish to cook in the oven has to fit through the door.
Maintaining your oven
Cover the oven during rain or snow. If you build an open-sided shed around your oven, it can last for years. If food sticks to the oven floor, you may need to scrape it out once in a while.

long term survival
47. A sturdy, fixed blade hunting knife should always be include. You can find these from Buck, Gerber, SOG, Camillus, Uncle Henry, and many others. I prefer the Camillus Pilot/Survival or Marine Combat knives. These have been made under contract for the US military for about four decades and have stood the test of time. They are also inexpensive ($25 and $35 respectively) so if one is lost or happens to break, you don't get as upset as you would should your Gerber BMF ($240) bite the dust.
48. Many people, myself included, have not been able to master the use of a sharpening stone. But with the use of a sharpening kit, such as those by Lansky, we can bring up a very sharp edge on our knives. Great for use on kitchen cutlery as well.
49. A pocket tool, such as those by Leatherman, Gerber, SOG, et al, are much more versatile than the Swiss Army Knife and their prices are comparable to the more expensive Swiss Army Knives. In the meantime, I will hang on to my SAK until I can afford a Leatherman Super Tool. (I still have a house to run.)
50. 200' to 500' of 550# test Paracord is a great addition to your supplies, especially when the 1/4" nylon cord/rope is too thick or not the right tool for the job.
51. Boiling water may be effective, but it is not the best way to purify water. Boiling removes the oxygen content and causes it to be flat. For EMERGENCY purposes only one can use un-scented household bleach to purify water, but you should use only 1/2 teaspoon per 5 gallons of water (1 tsp should the water be cloudy). The best method is to use HTH dry chlorine (65%), which can be purchased in bulk at stores like WalMart, Target, KMart, etc. (Also a great barter item.) The amount to use is 1/4 teaspoon (0.03 ounce) per 300 gallons for a 0.5 ppm of chlorine.
52. One can also get a complete cookset...cookpots, frying pan, coffee pot, plates, and cups...of good or better quality in the outdoor department of WalMart, Kmart, Target, etc., or a good outdoor supply store that sells camping equipment.
53. One should have two or three pairs of good hiking boots (U.S. issue combat boots are still the best and only cost $60-$80 mail order) in their closet and one dozen pair bootlaces per pair of boots (laces also come in handy for short term temporary uses, too). Should the long-term effect be much longer than anticipated, then the extra boots will be needed. Also a couple pair of good cross-trainers or running shoes would be advisable.
54.You should always have a handful of disposable lighters in addition to matches. They come in quite handy and you don't have to be a smoker to keep them on hand. They are inexpensive and take up very little room.
55. When we packed our food we used food-grade diatomaceous earth for the grains. All grain already has the eggs of insects in it - it's just the natural way. When they hatch out the diatomaceous earth either smothers them because the particles are so tiny or if the larvae is bigger or soft-skinned it dries them up.
I bake my own bread and grind my own flour. In some of the jars where we didn't use diatomaceous there is an occasional weevil and I grind it up - if folks eat animals then a bug or two shouldn't be a problem.
Diatomaceous earth is full of minerals and is a safe, non-toxic way to treat your food. You don't want to breathe it because the particles are so tiny but then, you don't want to inhale flour, either. It's real cheap, too.
We use 1/4 cup for a 5-gallon bucket of grain. We half-fill the bucket, sprinkle 1/2 the dust on, put the lid on, roll the bucket all around, take the lid off, fill the bucket with more grain to the top, add the rest of the dust, roll it around and you're done. You can do it in smaller batches, too. In gallon jars and then pour it into the bucket.
An added step would be to re-open and add a small piece of dry ice to the top. (I like to put it on a piece of broken pottery to keep it from "burning" the grain.) Let the lid rest on top while the dry ice sublimates into gaseous carbon dioxide and displaces bug-breathable air. Then seal tightly.
ALSO: ..I suggest sealing your bags, boxes etc. to keep from getting damp, then freezing them for 3 days..it kills the eggs. I have done this with everything I buy..it works. I have used rice, flour, etc. that is months old (re-stocking as I use). I'm sure it will work for animal feed as well.
You can also drop a couple of Bay leaves in since most bugs hate. Bay leaves are good to use in almost any food storage situation
Another good storage trick for grains and legumes is to use oxygen absorber packs that can be purchased wherever food storage supplies are sold. No oxygen = no living things, and no oxidation of the contents or the container.
To avoid 6 legged critters, vacuum seal your food (see Tilia Foodsaver) and store in 5 gallon plastic buckets with the snap on lids. Or, store food directly in the 5 gallon buckets and pay to have the buckets nitrogen injected. Costs a couple of bucks a bucket. Either of these methods will kill existing critters and prevent future contamination.
Second to vacuum sealing, you can use zip-lock bags. Fill the bag, lower it into a sink full of water until the water is just to the zip- lock. Seal the bag. Remove and dry the bag off. The water pressure pushes a lot of the extraneous gases (air) out of the bag.
Rats can, but won't gnaw into the 5 gallon buckets unless they have a reason to, like the odor of of something yummy on the other side. Properly sealed, a 5 gallon buckets should be odorless.
Rats require 3 things to survive, food, water and shelter. Remove any one of these three things and the rat population disappears.
I have used boric acid effectively for years to keep away roaches, along with Roach Prufe. The last place I was in had ants before I brought in food. One place I had and didn't prepare very many meals, had neither roaches nor ants, but I brought in weevils from the store, and they ate everything resembling a carbohydrate.
56. MAKING DO: . Stock up on kids clothing from the 2nd hand stores, jeans, sweats, warm winter clothing, and if you can't get to a store for any reason, you should have plain white/beige muslin cloth to make longs skirts & shirts once your regular clothing is gone.....but then we will also need to learn how to make clothing out of sheep's wool and grasses. You can make strong sandals out of tires so keep a few around and learning to work leather is a good idea too. There are great leather catalogs you can send for and check them out. Get a couple of old bikes too. Also get extra tubes & stuff to fix them with. Also pick up a few "fake" furs at the used clothing stores to use for covering. Or get real fur, but probably will cost more. You can get wool blankets at the Am Vets & Goodwill stores.
57. RAISING YOUR OWN CHICKENS: Here's a great idea for your meat chickens. You might want to consider feeding your chickens nothing but sprouted wheat if you don't free-range your birds. However, free-ranged chickens and their eggs are healthier to eat. Buy wheat and soak it in a bucket of water overnight. Drain off the water (give it to the chickens) and let the bucket sit for 3 or 4 days. Rinse the wheat twice a day. Once the little root pokes out it can be fed to the chickens and will have so much more vibrational energy (or spark of life) and nutrition than the unsprouted wheat kernel had.
Chickens fed only on unsprouted wheat will dress out to about 8 to 9 pounds each--this sounds incredible but it's really true. If you are going to raise chickens for meat it would be interesting to try this method. Chickens fed the regular way average 5 to 6 pounds on average.
BASIC LIST OF SUGGESTED ITEMS FOR LONG TERM SURVIVAL
Some people are saying we should prepare for at least 7 days, but the way things go after a hurricane, tornado, floods, loss of electricity and the fact that these disasters will continue and perhaps even get worse in coming years according to trends, one week is not enough. Some have said 7 years, but that seems too long so do what you can. Be sure to use the older stocked goods first and replace them with new. Otherwise you will end up with all old food you might not even want to eat. Always check canned tomatoes for spoilage, as even in the can they can spoil. Most other foods last a long time.
1. Water stored to last at least 5 days, at one gallon per day per person. (If you buy cases of l/2 litres - you can buy enough to last a couple of months) Recently, people are saying that water in plastic is toxic, so store water in glass if possible.
2. A good canteen and basins to catch rainwater. Also have a good supply of water purification tablets or bleach, or plan to boil your water. The surest way to purify water is to boil it for 15 to 20 minutes.
3. Food, per person, for one year:
Wheat - 300 lbs.
Rice - 100 lbs.
Beans, Peas, Lentils, 50 lbs. each
Honey or Sugar - 60 lbs.
Salt - 3 lbs. (Get 6 lbs to be sure) (See below)
Cayenne Pepper - 1 large can
Herbal Seasonings
Dried Milk - 80 lbs.
Peanut Butter - 50 lbs.
Dried Fruit
Canned food, or dried (ready to mix) food
Oatmeal - 50 lbs.
Alfalfa Seeds - 10 lbs.
Sprouts (see below)
Canned Sardines, tuna, salmon
If you have a baby, include formula and baby food. If you have pets, you will want food for them as well. Store food needs in waterproof containers, capable of also protecting against insects and mice. Use Steel garbage cans or plastic 5 gallon buckets. The vacuum sealed method is also very good. If you are storing nuts or oatmeal, they smell and taste bad after a while, so they will need to be rotated. For all storing of food, the rule is: use up the old and replace with the new.
NOTE; I recommend freezing nuts for storage.
4. Manual grain grinder
5. Medicines - Assemble a standard first aid kit, with a comprehensive first aid book. Also include things for headache, upset stomach, congestion, colds, such as Pepto Bismol, aspirin, Tylenol, Excedrin, disinfectants, prescription medicines; and anything else you use regularly. Include vitamins, apple cider vinegar, honey, garlic, sage tea for colds, mint tea, golden seal, brandy (good as medicine), herbal tinctures, hops, catnip (which helps you sleep), herbs for cooking, including dried garlic and onions, cayenne pepper, cumin, basil, and coriander and salt. After you've been eating rice and beans for a few days, they'll need lots of help to make them taste good.
Also learn about herbal medicines and if you have space, grow some of your own - most are perennials and once you get the plant growing, its yours for as long as you take care of it.
See: http://www.earthmountainview.com for suggestions on herbs and growing your own food.
6. Toothbrushes, baking soda or salt to brush with, a good supply of dental floss (which can be used for other things as well) and another items you need for good tooth care.
7. Extra eye glasses
8. For a camp kitchen you need: camp stove with good supply of fuel (in wooded areas, all you need are rocks and a flat tin or grill), pots and pans, plates and bowls (unbreakable) (you can use Army surplus camp kits) cooking utensils, knife, forks, spoon, spatula, biodegradable dish soap, towels, bucket to carry water, dish pan, matches dipped in wax and stored in waterproof containers.
9. A good tent, sleeping bag for each person, extra blankets, sleeping pads, and ground cloth - and another waterproof tarp to cover your camp gear.
10. Clothing - Have clothing for all weather. Include a good warm coat and sweaters, hat for rain or shine, rain gear, a good pair of hiking boots that will take years to wear out, warm winter underwear, wool socks, summer socks (don't wear socks with holes in them as they cause blisters) (learn to darn socks) work gloves, hats, and whatever else you need for warmth and protection.
11. Hunting equipment. Hunting might be necessary for survival in some situations. Be prepared both with equipment and knowledge of how to use the equipment. First choice of a gun is a .22 caliber rifle. You can kill anything up to a deer with it. Purchase 500 rounds of .22 hollow point bullets. If you are not a good marksman, then get a 30-30 or 30-06 and at least 200 shells. A shotgun comes in handy for shooting things flying or running. The bow and arrow is still one of the best weapons. You will have to practice, and of course, you can never run out of shells. If you want to be unseen and unheard by unfriendly people, this would be a good idea.
12. Fishing equipment. - Get basic equipment. Include assorted sized hooks, fish lines, sinkers, etc. Fishing takes time, but if you are moving toward long-term survival, time is something you may have plenty of.
13. Wood stove. Get one with a secondary burn chamber. It uses less wood and creates less pollution. Get one with a flat top for cooking on.
14. Chain saw, extra gas and oil, spark plugs, chain, etc.
15. Bow saw and a tool to set the teeth with, extra blades.
16. Skill saw (for when you have electricity)
17. Axe, hatchet, files.
18. Spitting maul
19. Flashlights with extra batteries and bulbs; candles; propane, kerosene, or Coleman lantern with plenty of fuel, and extra wicks and mantles.
20. A good pocket knife and a sharpening stone.
21. Hammers, assorted nails, assorted screws, wrench set, pliers, wire cutters, screw drivers, pipe wrench, 200 feet of 1/4 inch nylon rope, duct tape.
22. Shovels, spades, hoes, and rakes with strong teeth
23. Charging system - wind, water, or solar - to pump water and provide electricity
24. Backpack - Waterproof. If you are forced to relocate, it may be all that goes with you.
25. Compass.
26. Up-to-date maps of the area you want to live in. This will show you land and water away from human habitation.
27. A 4 wheel drive vehicle with all the proper tools for maintaining it. Extra parts.
28. Tire chains for snow.
29. Radio. Have more than one. electrical and battery operated. Get a crank operated one. (See C. Crane company for this information) You'll want to know what's going on in the outside world.
30. Soap for laundry and bathing. Also learn how to make your own and have those supplies handy.
31. Natural insect repellent.
32. A mirror. You'll want to see yourself, but you can use it for signaling as well.
33. Extra toilet paper. Also keep old newspapers and telephone directories for emergencies. (Hint: if you need to use old newspaper, crinkle it up and straighten it out several times first -- it's much softer!)
34. Female needs - (Use cloth pads you can wash)
35. Baby diapers. (Use cloth you can wash) Older kids can go bare bottom when necessary. Indians used moss and grass when necessary.
36. A basic sewing kit (needles and threads)
37. Safety pins
38. Swiss Army knife
39. Bobby pins (you can work wonder with these)
40. Pencils and paper
41. Musical instruments (harmonica, flute, guitar) to lift the spirit
42. Crazy glue
43. Patch kit
In the survival sense, think warm clothing, think fleece.
Those fleece throws (the single blankets) are great gifts, roll up nice and compact and are very useful as blankets, capes, padding for sleeping on the ground, tablecloths or even hung up on a leanto to break the wind.
By the time everyone adds their ideas to your list we will all need a U-haul on the back of that 4 wheel drive vehicle. Hey not a bad idea to learn how to build your own trailer, all you need is a spare axle, couple of wheels, a hitch and some wood. Peace - Marguerite
44. Lots of good books to read.
45. .22 ammunition - amount stored should be 5000 rounds, not 500. It is small, inexpensive, and can be used as barter material if need be.
46. .30-30/.30-06 - other calibers to seriously consider are the .308, .270, .243, .223, and 7.62x39. Many people, myself included can't handle the recoil of a .30-06 (and I don't like .30-30). There are more rifles chambered in the calibers I mentioned than I can list, and all are good. It all depends on what you can afford. The amount of ammo one should store should be a minimum 1000 rounds, not 200.

Prepping tips: Stockpiling non-perishable foods and water
07/30/2024 // HRS Editors // 1.4K Views

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...rs-Baskets.jpg
Even if you're not a prepper, you should think about stocking up on emergency foods for different survival scenarios. This is important because fueling your body with nutritious foods and staying hydrated during a crisis can differ from your regular diet during "normal" times.Below are some suggestions on what you should have in your survival stockpile before disaster strikes. (h/t to RealSimple.com)
Consider the nutritional value of the food you're buying
If the emergency is disease-related, such as during the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) in 2020, you and your family need to eat nutritious foods that will help support your overall health. And because you'll have a limited supply in your emergency preparedness kit or survival stockpile at home, the higher-quality foods you eat the better.
Barry Swanson, professor emeritus of food science at Washington State University, has advised that you will need calories during "a disaster or an emergency."
Swanson added that your diet should also include foods rich in nutrients and fiber because they will help "keep your diet normal." (Related: Survival essentials: Best budget-friendly foods for prepping.)
But that doesn't mean you can only eat bland foods when SHTF. Plan ahead and make a list of non-perishable items that you can use to make healthy, tasty meals during emergencies.
Below are some items for your survival stockpile:
Bottled water
You should drink enough water every day to stay hydrated. Ensure that you have at least a three-day supply of clean drinking water, and remember that you need at least one gallon per person daily.
If you are normally active, you can prevent dehydration by drinking at least a half gallon of water each day. You can use the other half gallon for cooking and washing.
Don't forget to stock up on clean water for your pets and livestock.
Canned fish
Canned food such as chicken, tuna, turkey or salmon will usually last at least two years in the pantry. Canned fish is also a great source of essential protein.
If you're stocking up on canned food, make sure you have a manual can opener and an extra one for emergencies.
Canned fruits and vegetables
While fresh produce is great for a balanced diet, canned fruits and vegetables are a great alternative when dealing with survival scenarios.
They can provide you with essential nutrients, making them an ideal hurricane food or natural disaster option.
Alternatively, you can stock up on freeze-dried fruits and vegetables if you want to add more variety to your stockpile. Compared to canned options, freeze-dried fruits and vegetables can last for several years in your stockpile if stored properly.
Nuts and trail mixes
Nuts and trail mixes are high-energy foods. They're also a convenient and healthy snack for different emergencies like a hurricane or tornado.
Buy vacuum-packed containers, which prevent the nuts from oxidizing and losing their freshness over time.
Peanut butter
Comforting and a great source of energy, peanut butter is full of "good" fats and protein. Unless the jar indicates otherwise, you don't have to refrigerate peanut butter after opening.
Where to buy supplies for your food stockpile before SHTF
The Health Ranger Store is committed to helping you prepare for any emergency, especially if you want to start a food stockpile for your family.
That’s why we’re proud to introduce a variety of lab-verified products, such as fair trade coffee and freeze-dried fruits and vegetables.
Freeze-dried instant coffee is made of tiny granules of brewed coffee extract that has been carefully chilled until frozen at specific temperatures, broken down into small fragments and finally dried under vacuum conditions. The tiny coffee granules left behind by this process can then easily be rehydrated by adding water.
This makes instant coffee the best way to store coffee and continue to get your coffee fix during a SHTF scenario.
The Health Ranger Store is thrilled to bring you our specialty Fair Trade coffee in a convenient and easy-to-prepare format.
With a much longer shelf life than regular coffee, Health Ranger Select Fair Trade Organic Freeze-Dried Instant Coffee delivers a bold and exquisite flavor of medium roast coffee that you can enjoy immediately. Just add hot water, stir and your instant coffee is ready to drink.
We also want to help you experience the full nutritional benefits of organic apples, which is why we're bringing you freeze-dried, organic, diced apples in long-term storable #10 cans.
Health Ranger Select Freeze-Dried Organic Diced Apples are made from fresh, high-quality apples that are grown under strict organic standards without the use of synthetic pesticides.
Our freeze-dried apple pieces are non-GMO, certified Kosher and organic and are thoroughly lab-tested for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbes. Eat them as a snack, sprinkle them onto cereals or rehydrate them by soaking them in water.
We also offer Freeze Dried Organic Peas that are non-GMO and grown in the U.S. under strict organic standards. The freeze-drying method preserves taste, texture and nutrients better than any other food preservation method invented.
You can trust that Freeze Dried Organic Peas from the Health Ranger Store are thoroughly lab-tested for glyphosate, heavy metals and microbes. They are also vegan, gluten-free, laboratory-verified and China-free.

The Most Effective Amish Home Remedies You Haven’t Heard About
by Katherine Paterson
July 1, 2022
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...print-icon.jpg
Our faith tends to lie in conventional medicine, with many of us making a quick dash to the pharmacy at the first sign of discomfort. However, this was not always the case.
People have relied on natural remedies to cure their ailments throughout history, and many still do today. The Amish provide an excellent example of how natural products, such as plants and herbs, can be used to heal ailments.
While not always opposed to conventional medicine, the Amish prefer natural medicine, and for generations, they have relied on natural products to treat health conditions.
We can learn many interesting and helpful home remedies from the Amish, some of which you may not have heard before.
Many of these treatments are still used and are even the foundation on which conventional medicine is built. Here are some Amish remedies that can help you heal without seeing a doctor or visiting a pharmacy, as there may come a time when this is impossible.
Potatoes Can Cure Headaches
A bad headache can ruin even the best of days. People everywhere suffer from headaches. While some headaches come on slowly, others attack without warning.
There is a strange old remedy that many people use to treat headaches, and all you need is a few potatoes.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...eard-About.jpg From consuming potato juice to placing potato slices on your face, potatoes have been used for centuries to treat headaches and migraines in almost every culture.
This practice is still common among the Amish population today and is one of the remedies that many swear by.
The juice of potatoes will provide a substantial amount of potassium, which is thought to be effective in fighting headache pain. However, since drinking potato juice is not a pleasant experience, many will not be willing to try it.
Related: How To Can Potatoes for Long Term Preservation
Instead, you can eat a baked potato to quickly absorb much-needed potassium. Alternatively, you could place a few slices on your face and near your temples.
Homemade Cough Syrup
Horehound is a member of the mint family. It has many benefits, especially in respiratory support and cough relief. Horehound will also aid in good digestion, support immunity, and ease inflammation, among other things.
Horehound syrup has been used to treat coughs for hundreds of years.
Ingredients:
- 1 oz. fresh or dried horehound leaves
- 1 pint of boiling water
- 3 cups of honey
Directions:
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...rd-About-2.jpg Bring water to a boil. Add horehound leaves and reduce heat. Let the mixture steep for 10 minutes.
Strain the liquid and measure, adding twice the amount of honey, and mix well. Pour the mixture into a sterilized glass container. Cover and store it in a cool dark place.
Have a teaspoon of horehound syrup four times a day until the cough subsides.
Homemade Decongestant
There is nothing better than a decongestant to break up the guck in your chest and relieve sinus pain when you are sick. You can make a decongestant at home, saving money and avoiding dangerous additives.
Ingredients:
- 2 tsp. dried or chopped peppermint leaves
- 1 tsp. rosemary
- 1 tsp. thyme
- 1-quart water
Directions:
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...rd-About-3.jpg In a saucepan, combine rosemary, peppermint, and thyme with water, and bring to a boil.
Turn off the heat, and cover the pot. Let the mixture steep and simmer for 10 minutes.
Draping a towel over your head, lean over the pot. With your eyes closed and head covered, breathe in the vapors.
Breathe slowly and deeply for five minutes to loosen phlegm and decongest your chest. Repeat as needed.
White Willow Bark Amish Fever Fighting Tea
White willow bark tea is an old Amish recipe that has been used for centuries to fight fever, reduce inflammation, relieve headache and ease arthritis pain.
While people used to chew willow bark for relief, they soon discovered that using the willow bark to create a tea was equally effective and worked much faster.
White willow bark contains salicin, similar to aspirin, and helps treat pain associated with inflammation or reduce fever. Note that if you have been told to abstain from aspirin, this recipe is not for you.
Ingredients:
- 1-2 tbsp white willow bark
- 1 cup water
- honey to taste
Directions:
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...rd-About-4.jpg Place the willow bark and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
Once a rolling boil is achieved, cover the pot and allow it to simmer for 10 minutes.
Turn off the heat but leave the pot in place covered and allow it to steep for 30 minutes.
Remove the pot cover, strain the liquid, and add honey to taste. Willow bark is known to be bitter, and you may require a fair amount of honey to achieve the flavor you desire.
Consume up to 4 cups of willow bark tea daily and be patient as you wait for relief. The best part of willow bark tea is that the effects, while slow to start, will last a fair amount of time.
An Old Amish Sore Throat Secret
This old Amish life hack is more of a quaint tea concoction that has been passed down through generations.
All you need to create this old Amish recipe is some black currant jam or jelly. While black currants are very healthy, they are often difficult to find. The shrub of black currants is known to carry a fungus that kills pine trees, and because of this, they cannot be purchased in most garden stores.
Thankfully, you can find pre-made black currant jams and jellies that will work for this recipe. When purchasing the jam, ensure you buy black currant and not red.
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon of black currant jam or jelly
- the juice of half a lemon
- 1 pint of water
- sugar or honey to taste.
Directions:
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...rd-About-6.jpg Mix all ingredients together in a medium saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a simmer and reduce the heat. Stirring occasionally, keep the mixture at a low simmer for approximately 10 minutes. Pour the mixture into a cup and drink it while it is hot.
This black currant tea can be consumed several times a day as needed until you feel better.
Amish All-Purpose Tonic
This old Amish recipe has been passed down through many generations and is still used by many to treat common colds and flu.
The recipe requires some work and planning, and many Amish people will create this mixture before the start of flu season to have on hand.
Ingredients:
- a sterilized jar with a tight-fitting lid
- ½ cup fresh horseradish, peeled and chopped
- 10 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
- 1 white onion, diced
- ½ cup ginger root; fresh, peeled, and chopped
- 2 fresh jalapenos, sliced (use gloves when handling)
- 2 lemons, sliced thin (no need to peel, but wash well)
- 2 tablespoons of dried rosemary
- 1 tablespoon of turmeric
- ¼ tsp. cayenne pepper
- apple cider vinegar
- honey to taste
Directions:
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...rd-About-7.jpg Add all ingredients to the jar, except the vinegar and honey. Add enough apple cider vinegar to cover the mixture and tighten the lid.
Related: Making Raw Apple Cider Vinegar at Home
Store the mixture in a cool, dark place.
Visiting the jar once or twice a day to shake the mixture, allow it to blend and steep for at least one month.
After a month, strain out the liquid. Ensure you press and squish the mix to extract all of the valuable liquid. Add as much honey as you wish to make the mixture palatable. Store the mix in a sealed container.
Amish Plasters
Common in Amish circles, plasters are quick and easy to prepare. They are mainly used to help recover from colds and flu or promote decongestion caused by a cold but may also ease other ailments.
Since plasters are so easy to make, they have been a long-time favorite among Amish people.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...rd-About-8.jpg
For example, to create a garlic plaster, you mince several garlic cloves and add olive oil to form a thick paste.
Wrap this paste on a square of flannel or cotton.
Make sure it is not oozing out the sides of the fabric, and place it on your chest.
Cover the wrapped material with hot water bottles or a warm blanket, and keep it on for 15-20 minutes.
Mustard plasters can be used when you suffer from stubborn chest congestion. To prepare, combine 1 tablespoon of mustard with ¼ cup of flour and add just enough warm water to create a thick paste.
Place the paste in the center of a large piece of fabric and wrap it tightly, making sure none of the plaster can contact the skin as it can cause burns. Place the tightly wrapped plaster on the chest and let it sit for 15 minutes. Repeat as needed.
More Amish Secrets
The Amish have so many fascinating and natural ways to treat ailments that it would be impossible to list them all. However, there are a few more that are worth mentioning.
Painkiller: To ease pain anywhere in the body, take powdered poke root and roast ¼ cup. Add enough water to create a thick paste from the material and apply it to the bottom of the feet.
Insomnia: Ease insomnia by mixing 1 teaspoon of gelatin in a cup of cold water. Let it sit for 5 minutes and add hot water, stirring until dissolved. Use 2 teaspoons in a glass of milk or water after dinner to help induce sleep.
Corns and bunions: Place onion slices on your feet and wrap them in bandages overnight to treat corns and bunions. There is also a remedy that says to use onions and old bread soaked in strong vinegar.
Vinegar is used for many things in Amish communities, including foot odors. According to some Amish folk, placing your feet in ½ cup of vinegar and water a few times a week will kill odor and bacteria. Some say to add a teabag as well.
Toothache: To ease the pain of a toothache, place a piece of cotton soaked in vanilla on the sore tooth.
Ease a stomach bug: Mix 2 tablespoons vinegar and ½ teaspoon salt in a quart of water. Drink as much of this liquid as possible in one day to ward off stomach bugs.
That is all the Amish remedies I can share this time, but there are many more to find and try. Knowing how to treat ailments naturally is a great practice and beneficial skill. I would love to hear some of the old remedies you have used or heard, even if they are not Amish.

Survival dental care: Keeping your teeth clean and healthy when SHTF
07/31/2024 // HRS Editors // 400 Views
Tags: dental care, dental health, emergency preparedness, emergency stockpile, Gear, goodhealth, homesteading, how-to, hygiene, Hygiene supplies, natural health, off grid, oral care, oral health, oral hygiene, preparedness, prepper, prepping, SHTF, Stockpile, survival, survival gear, survival stockpile, tips
https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...n-Brushing.jpg
Maintaining proper oral health even after SHTF is important because it helps keep your teeth and gums healthy and your breath fresh.
For emergencies, you can clean your teeth with toothpaste substitutes such as baking soda or even coconut oil. (h/t to SurvivalJack.com)
Here are some options if you don't have an extra supply of toothbrushes and toothpaste for the whole family when SHTF:
- Wash your hands thoroughly, but don't dry them.
- Use a wet finger to rub across your teeth and gums on one side.
- Rinse your finger thoroughly and repeat the second step on the other side of your teeth. Gargle with clean water.
- When you're done, wash your hands thoroughly.
Toothpaste substitutes for emergencies
Before disaster strikes, you should stock up on oral care products such as toothsalt with neem oil or fluoride-free toothpaste and extra toothbrushes.
But if you are looking for other options, here are some toothpaste substitutes to try:
Activated charcoal
Remember that activated charcoal is not the same as charcoal for your barbecue grill.
Activated charcoal is made from materials such as coconut shells or wood that have been burned at very high temperatures (1,110 and 1,650 F) and processed further to create a charcoal powder.
You should also note that activated charcoal is not recommended for crowns or veneers because it can permanently stain the surface.
In a survival situation, a toothbrush is more important than toothpaste so you can use a frayed twig alone (via the dry brushing method) without charcoal.
When making your own toothbrush from a twig, you need to mash or cut a clean, soft stick to mimic a toothbrush.
- Find a flexible twig such as pine, spruce or willow.
- Whittle away the bark, and square off one end of the stick.
- Make five to six cuts 1/4-inch deep into the end.
- Turn the stick 90 degrees, and make five to six more cuts.
- Hammer, crush or chew the "bristles" to soften them.
- Carefully brush each tooth with a downward sweeping motion.
- If you have clean water, gargle after "brushing."
Baking soda
To clean your teeth with baking soda, place a small amount on your toothbrush and brush your teeth. Rinse with water.
Alternatively, you can dissolve the baking soda in water and dip your toothbrush in the mixture and start brushing. This method works well with a chewing stick.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil is a good substitute for toothpaste.
Just dip your toothbrush in coconut oil and brush. (Related: Prepper oral health: How to clean your teeth and prevent cavities when SHTF.)
Sea salt
Sea salt has cleansing properties but it can be too abrasive if you brush with plain salt.

Having a home garden is a great idea if you want your family to have access to fresh, healthy and organic fruits and vegetables. To ensure healthy crops, try surprising but efficient ways to use household items that can supercharge your garden, such as making DIY fertilizer. (h/t to MindfulOfTheHome.com)
Try the suggestions below to ensure that your home garden thrives without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers.
Non-toxic soil boosters
Boosting soil health is crucial if you want to unlock the full potential of a sustainable home garden.
Soil does most of the heavy lifting in a garden because it directly influences plant health and growth. This is why you should learn how to nurture and enrich garden soil.
If you're a beginner, you can boost soil fertility by incorporating compost.
Compost is a "nutrient-rich organic matter" that helps improve soil structure. Compost also helps boost water retention and beneficial microbial activity.
To make compost at home, you can collect kitchen scraps, yard waste and other organic materials. Composting is also a good way to reduce food waste.
As a bonus, composting gives you access to an essential soil amendment that can help boost your organic home garden’s productivity.
You can also try vermicompost or worm castings. This potent soil booster is a good source of essential nutrients, beneficial microorganisms and enzymes that boost soil health and plant growth.
Adding vermicompost to garden beds or potted plants in an indoor container garden can also boost nutrient availability and plant resilience.
Aside from compost and worm castings, you can enrich garden soil with natural amendments such as blood meal, bone meal and fish emulsion for an extra nutrient boost.
- As the name implies, blood meal is derived from dried animal blood. It is rich in nitrogen, which stimulates leafy growth.
- Bone meal is full of phosphorus which boosts root development and overall plant health.
- Fish emulsion comes from decomposed fish. It is full of trace minerals and amino acids that support plant health and boost their natural defenses against pests and diseases.
DIY fertilizers
DIY fertilizers are a cost-effective and eco-friendly way to keep your garden healthy. When you produce your own fertilizer, you control the ingredients and eliminate any harmful chemicals or synthetic additives.
Banana peels are a great option because they are full of potassium. Chop up banana peels and bury them around the base of plants that need a boost of potassium.
As banana peels decompose, the nutrients will slowly release into the soil and support plant health. (Related: Home gardening basics: 11 Fast-growing vegetables you can harvest in 2 months or less.)
You can also use coffee grounds as DIY fertilizer because they are rich in nitrogen. When you're done brewing your coffee, don't throw away the grounds.
Scatter the coffee grounds around your plants or add them to your compost pile. The grounds will break down over time and enrich the soil with nitrogen.
Eggshells are also great for your DIY fertilizers because they are rich in calcium. Use eggshells to help prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes and provide essential nutrients to other plants that need calcium.
Crush eggshells into small pieces and sprinkle them in the soil around plants or add them to compost. The eggshells will decompose and slowly release calcium into the soil.
Natural pest repellents
Pests can wreak havoc in your garden. Fortunately, you can use effective and natural remedies available to get rid of pests.
One common and potent natural pest repellent is neem oil. The oil is derived from the neem tree seeds.
Neem oil is organic and biodegradable and it is used as a deterrent against various pests like aphids, mites, and whiteflies. Dilute neem oil in water, then spray it on plants to create a protective barrier.
Garlic is also a potent natural repellent. Mix crushed garlic cloves with water and spray it on plants to repel common pests such as aphids, snails and spider mites.
Garlic is effective because it contains sulfur compounds that repel insects.
You can also ensure the success of your home garden by using quality seeds and supplies.
