The CHICKEN REVOLUTION: How poultry saves cows and the planet
01/25/2025 // Kevin Hughes // 220 Views

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...rm-Poultry.jpg
- Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms uses "egg mobiles" – portable chicken coops – to address soil degradation, pest control and nutrient recycling in farming. Chickens follow cattle – breaking down cow manure, reducing fly populations, spreading natural fertilizer and improving soil health.
- Modern agriculture relies on chemical inputs, monocultures and overgrazing, leading to soil erosion, nutrient depletion and environmental harm. Salatin's approach mimics natural grazing patterns to restore ecological balance.
- Chickens not only sanitize pastures by eating fly larvae but also convert insects into high-quality protein, producing nutritionally superior eggs. Polyface Farms' eggs, for example, contain 20 times more folic acid than USDA standards.
- Salatin advocates for decentralized, community-based agriculture over industrialized systems. He emphasizes empowering individuals to grow their own food or support local farms to create sustainable, resilient food systems.
- Salatin encourages small, actionable steps like raising backyard chickens or composting to build a regenerative future. He stresses that individual decisions today will shape the world in decades to come.
In the battle against flies, soil degradation and the challenges of modern agriculture, chickens are emerging as unsung heroes. Organic farming maverick Joel Salatin has pioneered a revolutionary approach to farming that leverages the symbiotic relationship between cows and chickens.
Salatin, the visionary behind Polyface Farms in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, made this possible through his innovative "egg mobiles." These portable chicken coops are not just a quirky farming tool, they're a blueprint for sustainable agriculture that could transform the way people think about food production.
Modern agriculture often relies on chemical inputs, monocultures, and practices that deplete soil health. Cattle ranchers, for instance, frequently overgraze pastures, leading to nutrient-poor soils, weed infestations, and the need for synthetic fertilizers. This cycle of degradation is not only unsustainable but also contributes to environmental issues like soil erosion and water pollution. But Salatin sees a different path—one that mimics nature's patterns.
"If you look at herbivores in nature, they're doing three things: Moving, mobbing and mowing," Salatin explained to the Health Ranger Mike Adams and Todd Pitner during an appearance on "Decentralize TV."
Cows, like their wild counterparts – bison, wildebeest and zebras – thrive when they graze in tight herds, move frequently, and prune grass to stimulate regrowth. When these natural behaviors are disrupted, cattle become a liability rather than an asset.
Enter the chickens
Salatin's solution to the problems of conventional ranching is as ingenious as it is simple: Chickens. Specifically, he deploys – egg mobiles – portable chicken coops that follow cattle herds. Three to four days after cows graze a pasture, the chickens are brought in to scratch through the cow patties.
This process serves multiple purposes. First, chickens break apart the cow patties, eliminating fly larvae and reducing fly populations that torment cattle. Second, they spread the manure across the pasture, turning what would otherwise be concentrated waste into a nutrient-rich fertilizer. This not only improves soil health, but also eliminates the "repugnancy zone" that cows avoid when grazing near their own waste.
Salatin said the chickens are the heroes because they serve as biological sanitizers and fertility engines. But the benefits of this system extend beyond pest control and soil health. As chickens scratch through the pasture, they also feast on grasshoppers, crickets, and other insects, converting them into high-quality protein.
The result? Eggs that are not only delicious but also nutritionally superior. Salatin recounted a nutritional study in which Polyface Farms' eggs were found to contain 1,038 micrograms of folic acid—more than 20 times the U.S. Department of Agriculture's standard for eggs.
'“We're not talking about a 10 percent difference. We're talking about major differences," said Salatin, who describes himself as a "lunatic farmer."
This symbiotic relationship between cows and chickens is a prime example of what Salatin calls "mob stocking herbivorous solar conversion." By mimicking natural grazing patterns and leveraging the unique abilities of different species, farmers can build healthier soils, produce more nutritious food, and reduce their reliance on chemical inputs.
A blueprint for the future
Salatin's methods offer a stark contrast to the industrialized, centralized food systems that dominate modern agriculture. While lab-grown meat and cricket protein have been touted as sustainable alternatives, Salatin is skeptical.
The most famous farmer in the world warned that the more people centralize food production the easier it becomes to control with nefarious agendas.Instead, he advocates for decentralized, community-based food systems that empower individuals and families to take control of their own food supply. Whether it's raising backyard chickens, starting a small garden, or sourcing food from local farms, every decision matters. (Related: Sovereign nations must reclaim their food systems and decentralize nutritious food production before populations are exploited and starved to death.)
"Your decisions matter," Salatin said. "The world we have in 40 years will be the manifestation of the decisions we make today. If we want to see a different outcome, we need to start thinking differently, acting differently, and making decisions differently."
The humble chicken may not seem like a revolutionary force, but in the hands of innovators like Salatin, it's proving to be a powerful tool for change. By working with nature rather than against it, farmers can create systems that are not only sustainable but also regenerative systems that heal the land, nourish people, and build resilience in the face of climate change and other challenges.

Brighteon University will be streaming an episode a day of "Off Grid Survival Skills" by Marjory Wildrcraft from Feb. 1-10, and the replay of all 10 episodes on Feb. 11. Register here to learn life-saving skills when SHTF, such as treating infections without antibiotics, how to utilize medicinal plants, how to hunt and so much more.
In Episode 5, slated Feb. 5, Doug Simons shows how to transform discarded truck tires into durable, eco-friendly sandals inspired by indigenous techniques. These "three-point sandals" are not only sustainable but also customizable to fit your feet perfectly. In a world dominated by mass-produced footwear, wilderness survival expert Simons is revolutionizing the way people think about shoes.
The presentation takes viewers on a journey from raw materials to finished product, showcasing the step-by-step process of crafting these unique sandals. Using the sidewalls of old pickup truck tires, Simons demonstrates how to cut, shape and assemble the sandals, emphasizing the importance of precision and safety when working with rubber.
The design of the sandals is rooted in indigenous traditions, particularly from the Tarahumara people of Mexico, known for their long-distance running prowess. Simons highlights the cultural significance of the sandals, which are designed to be snug and minimalist, allowing for natural movement and reducing the risk of tripping — a common issue with bulkier footwear.
Wildcraft and Simons share a practical and eco-friendly skill that you can rely on anytime, anywhere: crafting durable sandals from recycled tires. This not only ensures you always have reliable footwear but also promotes sustainable living, lowering your carbon footprint.
What to expect
Viewers can expect to learn a lot of things from Episode 5 of "Off Grid Survival Skills," including the following:
- How tires are designed to withstand hard conditions, making them an excellent and reliable material for long-lasting footwear.
- How to make your own footwear and how repurposing old tires can offer a budget-friendly alternative to purchasing new shoes.
- How upcycling reduces waste and minimizes environmental impact.
The presentation doesn't just teach a craft — it inspires a mindset. By repurposing discarded materials, Simons and Wildcraft encourage viewers to rethink their consumption habits and embrace a more sustainable, hands-on lifestyle. Viewers will also learn how to customize their sandals with leather footbeds for added comfort and durability.
Simons walks through the process of tracing, cutting and attaching the leather, as well as drilling holes for the straps. He recommends using thick leather thongs for the straps, which he finds more comfortable and long-lasting than synthetic alternatives like parachute cord. The presentation also includes a post-filming update from Wildcraft, who has been wearing her handmade sandals for months. She shares her experience of refining the design with thicker straps, courtesy of the Tarahumara people, and offers tips for breaking in the sandals comfortably.
Off Grid Survival Skills by Marjory Wildcraft Day 5 is a must-watch for anyone interested in sustainable living, DIY projects, or simply learning a new skill. Whether you're a seasoned crafter or a curious beginner, Simons’ tutorial will leave you inspired to turn old tires into something both practical and meaningful.
Tune in to discover how to craft your own eco-friendly sandals and take a step toward a more sustainable future. From cutting rubber to lacing up your finished product, this video is a masterclass in creativity, resourcefulness and respect for the planet.

Hunting on a budget: How to bag your first deer without breaking the bank

https://www.naturalnews.com/wp-conte...fe_hunting.jpg
- Jackson Landers, a hunting instructor and author, emphasizes that hunting doesn't require expensive gear or a rural background. All you need is a rifle, a sharp knife and a cooler on wheels to start ethically and sustainably harvesting your own food.
- Landers advises beginners to use a scoped rifle like a .308 for its balance of power and manageable recoil. He stresses the importance of understanding animal anatomy and aiming for the heart or spine to ensure a quick, ethical kill.
- Landers challenges the outdated notion of avoiding does, explaining that hunting does is crucial for managing overpopulated deer herds. Many states even have programs requiring hunters to tag a doe before shooting a buck.
- Landers debunks myths about needing expensive gear like pickup trucks or tree stands. He recommends ground blinds and field butchering to make hunting more manageable, especially for smaller hunters or those hunting farther from roads.
- Landers views hunting as an innate human skill rooted in sustainability and accessibility. He encourages beginners to practice with their weapons, understand the animal, and avoid overcomplicating the process, making hunting an ethical and affordable way to source food.
Think you need a pickup truck, a tree stand and a garage full of gadgets to start hunting? Think again.
During the first episode of "Off Grid Survival Skills" by Marjory Wildcraft, streamed last Feb. 1 on Brighteon University, Jackson Landers, a seasoned hunting instructor and author of "The Beginner's Guide to Hunting Deer for Food," shared practical, budget-friendly tips for aspiring hunters. Landers, who grew up in a vegetarian household and began hunting as an adult, has taught hundreds of beginners—including vegans, grandmothers and chefs—how to ethically and sustainably harvest their own food. His advice? All you really need is a rifle, a sharp knife and a cooler on wheels.
Landers' journey into hunting began with a poignant story about his first deer. After weeks of nursing his paralyzed dog named Simon, Landers took a quick hunt behind his house. He shot a doe at close range, and moments later, Simon miraculously regained the ability to walk. "It was probably about the most positive experience you could have taking your first deer," Landers recalled. This story underscores the deep connection between hunting, food and the natural world.
For beginners, Landers recommends starting with a scoped rifle, such as a .308, which offers a balance of power and manageable recoil. "The most efficient and safe tool for this job is a scoped rifle," he said. He also stresses the importance of shot placement, advising hunters to aim for the heart or spine to ensure a quick, ethical kill. "Understand the anatomy," he urged. "If you can butcher a deer, you can butcher a goat, a sheep or even a pig."
One of the most surprising revelations for many new hunters is the importance of targeting does, not just bucks. "The idea that you shouldn't shoot does is antiquated," Landers explained. With deer populations booming due to the absence of natural predators, many states now encourage hunting does to manage overpopulation. In fact, some states have "earn a buck" programs, requiring hunters to tag a doe before they can shoot a buck.
No need for expensive gear
Landers also debunked the myth that hunting requires expensive gear. "You don't need a pickup truck to hunt whitetails," he said. "If you can butcher in the field, you could hunt out of a Prius." Instead of investing in tree stands—which can cost hundreds of dollars and pose safety risks—he recommends using a ground blind. "All you really need is your rifle, a sharp knife and a license," he said. "There are so many deer out there that the bell curve is large, and there’s a lot of dumb deer on the far end of that curve."
For those concerned about handling a large carcass, Landers suggests field butchering. "Quarter the deer right there," he advised. "You're only packing out what you're actually going to use." This approach not only makes the process more manageable for smaller hunters but also allows for hunting farther from roads, where deer are less pressured.
Landers' philosophy is rooted in accessibility and sustainability. "Hunting is human," he said. "It's something our ancestors did. You don't have to be a dude from a rural background to do it." His advice for beginners? "Understand the animal. Practice with your weapon. And don't overcomplicate it."
Whether you're a seasoned outdoorsman or a complete novice, Landers' insights offer a refreshing perspective on hunting as a practical, ethical and affordable way to put food on the table.

15+ Wild Edibles You Should Can This Spring
by Katherine Paterson
May 5, 2023
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...print-icon.jpg
Spring is the time of year when nature awakens from its winter slumber and offers up a bounty of wild edibles just waiting to be harvested.
Whether you’re an experienced forager or just starting out, there’s no better way to enjoy the season’s offerings than by canning them for later use.
Here are 15+ wild edibles for spring canning that you won’t want to miss.
Important Note: Always be aware and current on canning safety.
Many things cannot be safely canned, for example. Morel mushrooms are highly prized mushrooms that can not be canned as they release toxic hydrozines when cooked. Canning traps this poison, leading to a form of botulism.
Ramps
These wild plants, including wild leeks, are highly sought after. Many people love ramps or wild leeks for their pungent garlic and onion flavor.
Ramps can be canned in a pickling solution to create a flavorful addition to any meal.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-2.jpg Caning: Easily create pickled ramps using ramps, water, white vinegar, sugar, salt, bay leaves and mustard seeds.
Begin by cleaning the ramps well, trimming the roots and tops. Pack the trimmed ramps into a 1-quart jar, and cover with the combined ingredients before sealing the jar.
Related: The Most Dangerous Plant Look-Alikes
Allow the ramps to soak in the brine for at least 2 weeks before eating. However, adequately sealed, pickled ramps can last a long time in storage.
Fiddleheads
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-17.jpg These young fern fronds are a springtime delicacy and can be canned in various ways.
Canning: One easy recipe for canning fiddleheads is to boil vinegar, sugar, and salt, pour the mixture over the fiddleheads, seal the jar, and process for 10 minutes.
Wild garlic
One of the most popular items to forage is wild garlic. The bulbs of this plant can be canned in vinegar-based brine to add a unique flavor to your dishes.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-19.jpg Canning: While you can use wild garlic to create sauces and pesto, add it to soups, or use it in cooking, the easiest canning solution is to create a wild garlic paste.
Using only fine salt and oil, you chop the leaves before placing them in a processor to create a mash.
Next, add salt and oil until it becomes a paste. Garlic paste can be safely stored in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 6 months or can be kept longer if properly sealed with a canner.
Dandelion Greens
These bitter greens are found in abundance. While they are usually viewed as pesky weeds, dandelion greens can be dried, frozen, or canned in a simple vinegar-based brine.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-3.jpg Canning: To make 7 canned quarts, you will need approximately 28 lbs. of dandelion greens. Ensuring they are thoroughly washed, steam the greens.
Fill jars with loose leaves, adding a small amount of salt to each jar. Cover the leaves with boiling water, leaving 1 inch of headspace.
⇒ What Happens If You Dry Willow Leaves
Process in your canner for 70-90 minutes, depending on jar size. Some people use vinegar, add honey, or even use crush chili peppers. There are many recipes online to make a variety of flavorful creations.
Stinging Nettle
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-5.jpg Stinging nettle is a nutritious plant that can be canned in a water bath canner and used to make a tasty and healthy addition to soups and stews.
Canning: Fresh nettle is super easy to preserve with canning. All you need is stinging nettle, salt, mineral water and canning jars.
Add 1 tsp of salt to each jar and fill to the rim with mineral water—process for 10 minutes and store in a cool, dark place.
Wild Asparagus
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...Spring-4-1.jpg This springtime favorite can be canned in a water bath canner to preserve its delicate flavor for later use.
Canning: Fill canning jars with trimmed wild asparagus and boiling water – leaving 1 inch of headspace and allowing them to soak for 3-5 minutes. You can add salt or any other desired flavors.
Process the jars in your canner at 10 lbs. pressure for 30-40 minutes.
Elderflowers
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-6.jpg These fragrant flowers are often used in jellies and jams.
However, elderflowers can be canned in a simple syrup solution to make a delicious and refreshing summer drink.
Canning: Pickling elder flowers is simple.
Bring 1-2 cups of white vinegar, 1-2 cups water, and 100-150 g of sugar to a boil. Pour the mixture over 10+ elderflower heads and allow it to cool. Seal and store this mixture for a few months or extend storage time using a canner.
Wild Strawberries
If you are overrun with wild strawberries, there are many ways to store them for later use. These small, delicious berries can be used in jam, frozen, or dehydrated.
Related: How To Make The Long-Lasting Native American’s Wojapi Sauce
Although wild strawberry jam is good, these delightful treats can also be canned through water bath canning or stored in simple syrup. Canned wild strawberries will last 18 months or longer, depending on the process.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-7.jpg Canning: Use 2 cups of water and 3 ½ cups of sugar to create a sweet syrup. Begin by coating the strawberries in sugar, ensuring all the berries are well-coated.
Allow the strawberries to rest for 5-6 hours by covering them and placing them in the fridge.
Transfer the now syrup-covered strawberries to a large pot and heat over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Scoop the hot strawberries and syrup into your prepared jars, leaving ½ inch of headspace. Transfer the filled jars to a water bath canner. The jars need to process for at least 10 minutes. Check your seals and store them with a label and the date.
Blackberries, Serviceberries, Wild Plums, Cherries, Blueberries
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-8.jpg All these juicy berries can be canned in a water bath canner to make jams, jellies, and syrups.
Canning: Similar to the process for wild strawberries, you can also use a water bath canner to preserve blackberries. You can follow the steps explained in the canning instructions for strawberries.
Rose Hips
These vitamin C-packed fruits can be dried for storage, turned into jelly, or canned in a simple syrup solution to make a tasty and nutritious tea.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...s-Spring-9.jpg Canning: Chop the wild rose petals by hand or using a food processor. Add the petals to a pot with 4 cups of water and bring to a simmer for 20 minutes.
Drain the liquid into a storage container using a fine mesh strainer. The liquid should be clear. If the liquid is not clear, strain it again.
Related: My Grandma’s Method of Canning Eggplant
Pour the liquid back into the pot and add 4 cups of sugar and the remaining 4 cups of water. Simmer until all the sugar is dissolved.
Add your rose hip syrup to jars, leaving a ½ inch headspace. Add the lids, and place the jars in your canner and process for 10 minutes.
Red Clover Blossoms
So sweet and powerful, Red clover blossom flowers can be canned in a simple syrup solution to make tea or used to create clover-blossom jelly.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-10.jpg Canning: Begin by removing all the stem parts from the blossom and washing them. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil, turn off the element, and add the flowers.
Cover and let soak for 45 mins. Stir and let sit overnight. Strain the liquid back into the pot and compost the red clover blossoms.
Heat 4 cups of your blossom infusion liquid, 4 cups of sugar, approximately ¼ cups of lemon juice, and a pouch of powdered pectin until all the sugar dissolves, stirring often.
You want to heat the mixture to 220 degrees to allow proper setting. Fill your canning jars, leaving ¼ inch headspace—process for 10 minutes.
Wild Violets
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-11.jpg One way to preserve wild violets is by canning them in a simple syrup solution. This technique creates a tasty addition to a wide range of desserts and sweet treats.
Canning: You can use the directions above to create a violet jelly or turn these fragrant flowers into tea.
Wild Carrots
These flavorful greens can be canned in a simple vinegar-based brine to add a unique flavor to salads and other dishes.
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-12.jpg Canning: Whether wild or store-bought, cut the carrots into the desired size and place them into canning jars. Cover the carrots with boiling water and 1 tsp of salt, leaving 1 inch of headspace.
Close the jars, wipe the rim, and place them in your canner to process for 25-30 minutes, letting them cool when finished.
Purslane
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-13.jpg This nutritious plant grows in abundance in many gardens. It can be canned in a simple brine to make a flavorful addition to salads and other dishes.
Canning: You can safely can wild greens with a pressure canner. You start by washing the greens well, then blanch them.
Pack the greens into jars, leaving 1 inch of headspace. Fill the jars with boiling water. Wipe the rims, attach the lids, and add to the canner to process for 1-1 ½ hours, depending on the jar size.
Wild Mustard Greens
https://www.askaprepper.com/wp-conte...-Spring-14.jpg These flavorful greens can be canned in a simple vinegar-based brine to add a unique flavor to salads and other dishes.
Canning: Wash the greens thoroughly. Drain the water and cut through stems and midribs. Blanch your greens 1-pound at a time, followed up by steaming them for 3-5 minutes.
Place your canning jars in hot water while cleaning and blanching your greens, removing them only when you are ready to use them. Add ½ tsp. salt for each pint or 1 tsp. for quarts, along with loosely-packed greens.
Add boiling water with 1-inch headspace—process pints for 70 mins at 10 lbs pressure and quarts for 90 mins at 11 lbs. Let your jars cool for 12-24 hours.

Beyond antibiotics: How to build immunity and prevent infections with food and herbs

- During the fourth episode of "Off Grid Survival Skills," master herbalist Doug Simons told viewers that high-quality, nutrient-dense foods are the cornerstone of robust health and immunity. He critiqued reliance on pharmaceuticals, advocating instead for a diet rich in natural, whole foods to prevent illness and promote long-term wellness.
- Simons introduced the concept of "boundary medicines" — herbs like garlic, oregano and chaparral that work harmoniously with the body to create a balanced defense against harmful microbes.
- Highlighting the effectiveness of natural remedies, Simons demonstrated how poultices made from plants like prickly pear, clay and plantain can treat burns, infections and even venomous bites.
- Simons shared practical strategies for addressing severe conditions like staph infections and brown recluse spider bites using herbs and poultices. He stressed the importance of rebuilding health through rest, nutrient-rich foods and natural remedies, rather than relying solely on antibiotics, which often fail to address root causes.
- The interview underscores the importance of taking control of one’s health by growing medicinal herbs, preparing natural remedies and embracing the healing potential of everyday plants. Simons encourages a shift in mindset, urging people to view their gardens and kitchens as sources of wellness and resilience.
During the fourth episode of "Off Grid Survival Skills" by Marjory Wildcraft, streamed last Feb. 4 on Brighteon University, Doug Simons, a master herbalist with decades of experience treating infections, burns, wounds and more using the power of plants and food, shared profound insights into how diet, herbs and natural remedies can fortify the body against infections and promote lasting health.
"The best medicine is good food," Simons said. "We'll never have high-quality health by consuming poor-quality foods and trying to make up for it with pharmaceuticals or supplements." His message is clear: The foundation of immunity lies in nutrient-dense, high-quality foods. He also introduced the concept of "boundary medicines"—herbs like garlic, oregano and chaparral that create a harmonious barrier against harmful microbes without resorting to the "war mentality" of modern medicine.
"We're not trying to kill all the microbes," Simons explained. "We're creating boundaries, communicating with them and establishing a balanced relationship." This holistic approach not only prevents infections but also strengthens the body’s natural defenses, reducing the likelihood of future illnesses.
Simons emphasized the importance of boundary medicines, which include antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal herbs. Garlic, for instance, is a powerhouse when crushed and exposed to air, releasing allicin, a potent compound that combats infections. Oregano, particularly wild or Mediterranean varieties, is another boundary medicine that can be consumed as a tea or oil to fight infections internally.
"Garlic is a hot medicine," Simons cautioned. "It's powerful, but you don't want to consume it on an empty stomach. Always have water or an apple nearby to soothe any digestive discomfort." He recommends consuming three to seven cloves daily during an infection, depending on the severity.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Simons' approach is his use of poultices — natural compresses made from plants like prickly pear, clay and plantain. These poultices draw out infections, reduce inflammation and speed healing. "Prickly pear is the best poultice for burns, infections and even venomous bites," Simons said. "It's superior to aloe and works wonders for second-degree burns, often healing them in about 10 days."
Simons demonstrated how to prepare a prickly pear poultice, emphasizing the importance of size and consistency. "The poultice must be larger than the wound and at least an inch thick," he explained. "It should stay on for six to eight hours, depending on the condition." For burns, he recommends changing the poultice every six hours to prevent infection and promote healing.
The secret to lasting health isn't in a pill
Simons also shared his methods for treating serious conditions like staph infections and brown recluse spider bites. "Staph infections are a sign that the body is run down," he noted. "To treat them, you need to rebuild your health with high-quality food, rest and herbs like garlic and chaparral." He recommends making a strong chaparral wash to pour over the body and consuming raw garlic to combat the infection internally.
For brown recluse bites, which can cause necrotic tissue damage, Simons relies on poultices to draw out the venom. "A prickly pear poultice, changed every six to eight hours for two to three days, can completely resolve the bite," he said. "It's far more effective than antibiotics, which don't address the venom itself."
As antibiotic resistance continues to rise, Simons’ insights offer a hopeful alternative. "The secret to lasting health isn't in a pill," he concluded. "It's on your plate and in the herbs you grow. By embracing these natural remedies, we can build a stronger, more resilient body and a healthier future."
Throughout the interview, Simons stressed the importance of diet in preventing and treating infections. "The healthier we are, the fewer infections we get, and the less severe they are," he said. He advocates for green powders made from nutrient-rich plants like nettles, which can be consumed daily to boost immunity. "High-quality green energy is one of the most powerful things you can put in your body during a stress state," he added.
Simons' message is one of empowerment and simplicity. "These methods are not difficult, but they require a shift in perspective," he said. "We need to take responsibility for our health and work with our bodies, not against them." He encourages people to grow their own herbs, learn to make poultices and build a relationship with the plants that heal.

U.S. faces most severe flu season in 15 Years, but dozens of HOME APOTHECARY EARLY TREATMENTS go ignored by the CDC

The United States is grappling with its most active flu season in over a decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Preliminary estimates reveal that the country has seen at least 24 million influenza cases this season, marking one of the most severe outbreaks in 15 years. The CDC also reported that 310,000 Americans have been hospitalized due to the flu, and 13,000 people, including 57 children, have died from the infection as of February 7. These numbers are expected to change as the flu season continues. Most of these patients are dehydrated and are not receiving the proper nutrients to assist in their body's recovery.Dr. Robert Hopkins, Jr., medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID), noted that influenza is widespread across most of the U.S., with hospitalizations reaching their highest levels since 2010. "We are currently seeing the highest level of influenza hospitalizations since 2010," Hopkins told Live Science.
The surge in cases highlights the importance of proper hydration, sleep, and nutrient assimilation, especially during times of stress. The CDC pushes vaccines annually, but after 80 years of flu vaccine campaigns, forward-thinking people are questioning whether this paradigm of immunity is working at all and potentially causing more harm. The truth is: dozens of home apothecary solutions exist to treat the flu and support the body through the infection and detoxification process. However, the CDC fails to mention any of these well-researched remedies and supportive measures, despite the population desperately needing new advice for handling influenza and symptoms related to the flu.
Here are 55 basic home apothecary preparations that can help with flu, respiratory illness, and other flu-like illnesses:
1. Ginger - Contains gingerols, which have antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce flu symptoms. Example: Ginger tea or powder can be consumed to alleviate fever and sore throat.
2. Echinacea - Boosts the immune system and has antiviral properties that may reduce flu severity. Example: Echinacea supplements or teas are commonly used during flu season.
3. Garlic - Contains allicin, which has antiviral and antibacterial effects that can help fight infections. Example: Raw garlic or garlic-infused tea can be consumed to strengthen the immune system.
4. Green Tea - Rich in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has antiviral properties that may reduce flu transmission. Example: Drinking green tea daily can help maintain immune health.
5. Stevia - Contains antioxidants that support immune function and may reduce flu risk. Example: Stevia can be used as a natural sweetener in flu-fighting beverages. Stevia is the proper sugar replacement.
6. Lemon Balm - Has antiviral properties that can help combat influenza viruses. Example: Lemon balm tea can be consumed to relieve stress and improve immunity.
7. Parsley - High in antioxidants like vitamin C, which strengthens the immune system. Example: Adding parsley to meals can boost vitamin C intake.
8. Sage - Contains rosmarinic acid, which has antiviral effects against flu viruses. Example: Sage tea can be drunk to soothe sore throats and reduce inflammation.
9. Thyme - Rich in antioxidants and has antiviral properties that can help prevent flu infections. Example: Thyme tea or extracts can be used to support respiratory health.
10. Rosemary - Contains carnosol, an antioxidant that may enhance immune function. Example: Adding rosemary to dishes can provide immune-boosting benefits.
11. Oregano - High in antiviral compounds like carvacrol, which can combat flu viruses. Example: Oregano oil or tea can be consumed to reduce flu symptoms.
12. Clove - Contains eugenol, an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory compound. Example: Clove tea can be drunk to ease sore throats and reduce fever.
13. Cumin - Rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties. Example: Adding cumin to meals can support immune function.

- Savannah Brown has built a thriving chicken business in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, starting with baking bread as a hobby and expanding to raising 80-90 chickens. She sells eggs, hatches chicks and creates fly-fishing materials from rooster feathers, showcasing her innovative and eco-friendly farming practices.
- Brown prioritizes sustainable farming by feeding her chickens non-GMO sprouting feed, allowing them to free-range on grass and bugs and using natural remedies like essential oils for their health. Her methods create a self-sustaining cycle that benefits both the environment and her flock.
- Brown incubates eggs in her bedroom, meticulously controlling temperature and humidity for successful hatches, achieving a 92% success rate. She also experiments with breeding to create unique chicken varieties, such as a hen that lays green eggs.
- Brown uses electric poultry netting and portable coops to protect her chickens from predators. She emphasizes their well-being by providing constant access to water and using natural treatments like rosemary and melaleuca oils to address health issues.
- Brown's story highlights the potential of young people to drive sustainable agriculture. She advocates for spending time in nature rather than on screens and aims to expand her business, including becoming NPIP-certified to ship chicks nationwide. Her work serves as a model for eco-friendly farming and self-reliance.
In the episode 10 of "Off Grid Survival Skills," aired Feb. 10, Savannah Brown joined Marjory Wildcraft to discuss her chicken business. At just 13 years old, Brown is not your average teenager. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, she has built a thriving chicken business that is setting a new standard for sustainable agriculture. From selling eggs and chicks to crafting fly-fishing materials from rooster feathers, Brown's innovative practices are inspiring a movement toward eco-friendly farming and self-reliance. Her story is a testament to the power of passion, hard work and a deep connection to nature.
Brown's journey began two years ago when she started baking bread as a hobby. What began as an accident turned into a small business, with friends and neighbors eagerly buying her loaves. "I made 34 loaves in one 19-hour baking day," she recalled. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to save up for her first flock of chickens, which she purchased in March 2016. Starting with 27 chicks, Brown quickly fell in love with poultry. "I got chicken fever very early on," she said. Today, she manages a flock of 80 to 90 chickens, selling eggs, hatching chicks and experimenting with innovative farming techniques.
What sets Brown apart is her commitment to sustainability. She feeds her chickens non-GMO feed that sprouts into plants, creating a self-sustaining cycle. "When I drop their food, the next year it will sprout morning glories, corn and peas," she explained. Her chickens also enjoy a free-range diet of grass, worms and bugs, supplemented with essential oils like oregano for immune support. "I dilute the oils and spray them on the chickens," she said, emphasizing the importance of natural care.
Brown's business is not just about profit — it's about education and empowerment. She incubates eggs in her bedroom, carefully monitoring temperature and humidity to ensure successful hatches. "A degree off can make or break a hatch," she noted. Her first hatch had a 92 percent success rate, far exceeding expectations. She also experiments with breeding, aiming to create her own varieties of chickens. "I'd like to cross a Black Copper Maran with a Blue Ameraucana to produce a hen that lays green eggs," she shared.
Predator management and animal welfare
Her innovative approach extends to predator management and animal welfare. Brown uses electric poultry netting and portable coops to protect her flock from hawks, raccoons and weasels. "I close my chickens up every night to keep them safe," she said. She also prioritizes their health, providing constant access to water and using natural remedies like rosemary and melaleuca oils to treat lice. "Essential oils are powerful, so I always dilute them," she explained.
Brown's passion for chickens has not only empowered her family but also inspired others in her community. She sells chicks and eggs locally and her dedication has earned her a loyal customer base. Her long-term goals include becoming NPIP-certified to ship chicks across the United States and expanding her business. "In five to ten years, I'd like to have everything expanded," she said.
Her story is a beacon of hope for sustainable farming and youth empowerment. "I really think younger people should spend more time outside with chickens and nature than on video games," she advised. Brown's journey proves that age is no barrier to making a meaningful impact. As Wildcraft said, "Savannah Brown is a remarkable young lady. Chickens are fundamental for every backyard and her story is an inspiration to us all."
Could this teenage farmer hold the key to a more sustainable future? Brown's innovative practices, dedication to animal welfare and entrepreneurial spirit suggest that the answer is a resounding yes. Her story is a reminder that the next generation of farmers is already here — and they’re ready to change the world, one chicken at a time.

- Mike Adams explores the transformative health benefits of full-spectrum light, especially sunlight, through personal experience with a high-intensity light therapy device, noting significant improvements in health and energy.
- The device Adams uses is a sophisticated, powerful machine with hundreds of LEDs, including infrared and red lights, providing a bright, sun-like light that he describes as a "godsend" for his well-being.
- Ott's research in "Health and Light" reveals that different light wavelengths impact plant and animal health, with full-spectrum light promoting optimal growth and health, and artificial light potentially causing negative effects.
- Light impacts human health profoundly, affecting sleep cycles, mood, energy, and the immune system; natural light may help prevent and reverse certain cancers, underscoring the importance of natural light exposure.
- Practical tips include morning routines with light therapy devices, avoiding excessive use of sunglasses and sunscreen, and maximizing full-body light exposure, especially in the morning, to harness the health benefits of light.
In a groundbreaking report, Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, delves into the transformative power of light, particularly sunlight, and how it influences health and well-being. Inspired by his recent interview with Jonathan Otto and the book "Health and Light" by John Nash Ott, Adams shares his personal experience with a high-intensity light therapy device and emphasizes the crucial role of light in our lives.
The importance of full-spectrum light
Light, especially full-spectrum sunlight, is essential for health, affecting everything from mood to cellular function. Mike Adams, known for his deep dive into natural health and nutrition, has always advocated for the benefits of sunlight. However, he recently realized the depth of its importance through his personal use of a high-intensity light therapy device.
Adams describes the device as a towering, heavy machine with cooling fans and hundreds of LEDs, including infrared and visible red lights. "It’s so bright, it’s like the sun," he says. After using it for a couple of weeks, he found it to be a "godsend," noting significant improvements in his health and energy levels.
The science behind light therapy
The science behind light therapy is well-documented. John Nash Ott, in his book "Health and Light," explores how different wavelengths of light affect living organisms. Ott's research began with time-lapse photography of plants, where he observed dramatic changes in plant growth under different colored lights. For instance, plants exposed to red light grew taller but didn’t flower, while those under blue light flowered profusely.
Ott extended his research to animals, particularly lab mice. Mice exposed to pink fluorescent light became aggressive and lethargic, and developed tumors faster. Conversely, mice under full-spectrum light, which mimics natural sunlight, thrived with increased life spans and normalized behavior.
Light and human health
The impact of light on human health is equally profound. Adams explains that light entering the eyes stimulates the pituitary gland, influencing various bodily functions, including sleep cycles, mood, energy levels, and even the immune system. Ott’s research suggests that natural light may play a role in preventing and reversing certain types of cancer. In one study, cancer patients who spent more time outdoors without sunglasses saw improvements in their conditions, with some experiencing a halt in tumor progression.
Modern life, however, often deprives us of the full spectrum of natural light. We spend most of our time indoors under artificial lights and use sunglasses or sunscreen when outdoors, blocking out beneficial wavelengths. Ott’s advice is straightforward: get outside, especially in the morning, and use full-spectrum lighting indoors when natural light is not available.
Personal experiences and practical tips
Adams shares his morning routine, which includes using the high-intensity light therapy device while checking the news. "I rotate every couple of minutes to ensure I get a full-body light treatment," he explains. He emphasizes the importance of light exposure on all parts of the body, noting that some health enthusiasts practice nude sunbathing to maximize the benefits.
For those unable to sunbathe nude, Adams recommends using a high-quality light therapy device. He also advises against overusing sunglasses and sunscreen, which can block beneficial UV light. Instead, opt for sunglasses that don’t block all UV wavelengths and use natural methods to protect the skin from excessive sun exposure.
Conclusion
The healing power of light, particularly full-spectrum sunlight, is a potent yet often overlooked aspect of health and well-being. As Mike Adams highlights, light influences our mood, cellular function, and overall health. Incorporating more natural light into our lives and using light therapy devices can have profound benefits. Whether it’s a morning walk in the sun or a session with a light therapy device, embracing the power of light can be a transformative step towards better health.
By prioritizing light exposure and understanding its profound effects, we can harness a natural resource that has the potential to revolutionize our well-being. Stay curious, stay healthy, and keep seeking the light.

- John Nash Ott's 1973 book, "Health and Light," explores the impact of light on human health and emotional well-being, based on his research on plant growth and light exposure.
- Ott discovered that different wavelengths of light affect plant behavior, leading him to hypothesize that light could also influence animals and humans.
- Experiments with lab mice showed that exposure to full-spectrum light improved health, lifespan and behavior, while pink fluorescent light led to negative effects.
- Ott's research revealed the critical role of light in regulating circadian rhythms, which affect sleep, mood, energy levels and immune function.
- Ott's findings suggest that increased exposure to natural sunlight, reduced use of sunglasses and sunscreen, and the use of full-spectrum lighting indoors can improve health and potentially prevent chronic diseases.
In a world increasingly dominated by artificial lighting and indoor living, John Nash Ott wrote all the way back in 1973 about the profound impact of light on human health and emotional well-being.
Ott's book, "Health and Light: The Extraordinary Study that Shows How Light Affects Your Health and Emotional Well-Being," delves into the intricate relationship between light and life, revealing how different wavelengths and light exposure can influence everything from mood and energy levels to cellular behavior and disease prevention.
Ott, a pioneer in the field of light research, began his journey with time-lapse photography of plant growth. He noticed that altering the color of light in his experiments produced dramatic changes in plant behavior. Red light caused plants to grow taller but prevented flowering, while blue light promoted robust flowering. Green light, on the other hand, seemed to inhibit plant growth altogether. These observations led Ott to hypothesize that if light could have such a significant impact on plants, it might also affect animals and humans.
To test his hypothesis, Ott conducted a series of experiments with lab mice, exposing them to various types of light. The results were staggering. Mice exposed to pink fluorescent light exhibited aggressive behavior, lethargy and an accelerated development of tumors. Conversely, mice exposed to full-spectrum light, which mimics natural sunlight, thrived. Their lifespans increased, their behavior normalized and their overall health improved. These findings were consistent across multiple experiments, underscoring the critical role of light in biological health.
Ott's research extended beyond the type of light to include the timing and duration of light exposure. He discovered that light plays a crucial role in regulating circadian rhythms, the internal biological clocks that govern various physiological processes. Just as plants have a built-in mechanism to open and close their flowers in response to light, humans have similar rhythms that influence sleep, mood, energy levels and even immune function.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Ott's work is the impact of light on human health. He found that light entering the eyes stimulates the pituitary gland, which in turn influences a wide range of bodily functions. This discovery led Ott to explore the effects of different types of light on specific health conditions.
In one notable experiment, he worked with a group of cancer patients who were instructed to spend as much time as possible outdoors without sunglasses. The results were remarkable. Fourteen out of 15 patients showed no further progression of their tumors, and some even experienced improvements.
Ott's findings suggest that modern life, characterized by prolonged indoor exposure to artificial light and the widespread use of sunglasses and sunscreen, may be contributing to a range of health issues.
Light pollution from artificial sources can disrupt circadian rhythms, leading to problems like depression, fatigue and potentially more serious conditions such as cancer. Ott's advice is straightforward: Get outside, especially in the morning, and spend time in natural sunlight. If sunglasses are necessary, choose ones that do not block all ultraviolet light. When indoors, opt for full-spectrum lighting that mimics natural sunlight.
The implications of Ott's research are far-reaching. In an era where mental health concerns and chronic diseases are on the rise, understanding the role of light in health and well-being could provide a simple yet powerful tool for prevention and treatment. Ott's work serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of nature and human health. It challenges the modern tendency to overlook the subtle yet profound ways in which our environment, including something as ubiquitous as light, can influence our well-being.

- Tropical Storm Debby has caused unprecedented damage in Florida, leading to widespread infrastructure failures, power outages and severe flooding, making travel dangerous and cutting off communities, with some areas becoming accessible only by boat.
- While the immediate impact of the storm is visible, a financial crisis is looming, marked by a crashing stock market and failing online brokerages, suggesting a critical fragility in the economic system that could lead to a financial collapse.
- Tina Blanco and Steve Slepcevic recommend proactive measures such as converting dollar wealth into tangible assets like gold and silver, and stockpiling essential supplies to prepare for potential economic instability and collapse.
- Other key preparedness strategies shared by the two include the use of reliable communication devices like satellite phones, stocking up on essential supplies in advance and investing in security and emergency training.
- Highlighting the importance of community support, Blanco’s company provides free satellite phones to emergency responders, and Slepcevic emphasizes the role of individuals as protectors of their families and communities in times of crisis.
As Tropical Storm Debby ravaged Florida with unprecedented force, causing widespread infrastructure failures and power outages, a more insidious tempest is brewing in the financial markets. While the immediate crisis is visible and tangible, the economic turmoil on the horizon is equally, if not more, perilous.
Tina Blanco of the Satellite Phone Store and experienced emergency responder Steve Slepcevic joined the Health Ranger Mike Adams on the "Health Ranger Report" to discuss this economic collapse. They drew critical parallels between the chaos of a natural disaster and the impending financial crisis.
While the physical storm is immediate and visible, the financial storm is more insidious. The stock market is crashing, and online brokerages are failing, highlighting the fragility of the current economic system. Blanco and Slepcevic both advocate for proactive measures to navigate the uncertain economic landscape.
Adams emphasized the importance of preparing for a financial collapse when it becomes starkly apparent. The Health Ranger said people need to trade out dollar wealth for things that hold value, like gold and silver, and stock up on essential supplies. Meanwhile, Blanco shared how she personally purchased a year's supply of food for her family – acknowledging that being prepared is not a game but a matter of survival.
Practical advice for weathering the storm
Blanco and Slepcevic shared important pieces of advice for weathering the storm in their "Health Ranger Report" interview.
- Reliable Communication: They highlighted the critical importance of reliable communication methods, with Blanco emphasizing that satellite phones are essential stressing that when cell service dies, a satellite phone can be the only way to stay in touch. Her company, the Satellite Phone Store, offers affordable plans and drills for families to practice using these devices. (Related: Preparedness and survival: Ways to communicate after a disaster if cell phones don’t work.)
- Strategic Stockpiling: Slepcevic advised people to stock up on food, water and essential supplies well in advance. The transformational leader in operational resilience emphasized the dangers of waiting until the last minute, when stores are empty and panic is rampant. He urged people to be preventative and preemptive.
- Security and Training: Slepcevic stressed the need to invest in security and getting trained for emergency situations. He mentioned that he is holding a grid-down training event to teach skills from hot-wiring cars to building shelters and hunting for food. The founder of Strategic Response Partners added that training can mean the difference between survival and chaos.
- Financial Preparedness: Both experts recommend investing in precious metals. Slepcevic pointed out that if the financial system collapses, tangible assets like gold and silver are crucial. Blanco has followed this advice, securing her family's financial future with such investments.
The insights of Blanco and Slepcevic offer a roadmap for individuals and families to navigate the challenges ahead. By prioritizing reliable communication, strategic stockpiling, security and financial preparedness, people can mitigate the impact of both natural and economic disasters. The calm before the financial storm is a time for action, not complacency.

- Recent crises like the Texas winter storm and the CrowdStrike IT outage highlight the fragility of centralized systems, and the risks associated with just-in-time delivery, underscoring the need for personal and community preparedness.
- Thom Rigsby, founder of American Contingency (AmCon) emphasizes that preparedness involves developing a mindset of self-reliance, informed by his personal experiences of growing up on a farm and serving in the military, as well as a significant 11-day power outage.
- AmCon provides a structured approach divided into 12 categories, such as food and water, income, health and communications, advocating for a PACE (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency) plan to ensure resilience in various scenarios.
- The organization fosters a nationwide network of members who can support each other in crises, with local chapters providing immediate assistance, exemplified by a rapid response to a member in distress after hitting a deer.
- AmCon addresses the normalcy bias through training and practical skills, while leveraging technology with an app that offers checklists, training and daily situational reports, emphasizing the importance of satellite phones and ham radios in communication.
In an era where the reliability of centralized systems is increasingly questionable, the importance of personal and community preparedness cannot be overstated. From the cascading power outages during the Texas winter storm to the widespread disruption caused by the CrowdStrike IT crisis, it is evident that people's reliance on just-in-time delivery and centralized infrastructure is a double-edged sword.
American Contingency (AmCon) founder Thom Rigsby joined the Health Ranger Mike Adams and Todd Pitner on "Decentralize TV" to touch on the issue. He delved into the stories of individuals and communities who have found themselves in dire situations due to system failure. In the same manner, he shared how organizations like AmCon are stepping in to provide the knowledge, resources and network needed to navigate these uncertain times.
Personal preparedness is not just about stockpiling supplies; it's about building a mindset of self-reliance. Rigsby emphasized the importance of a balanced approach to preparedness. According to the executive director of AmCon, he had learned the value of preparedness and self-sufficiency by growing up on a farm and serving in the army.
His personal experience with an 11-day power outage in North Alabama underscored the need to codify and share the lessons of preparedness. "When you don't have power for 11 days, you realize how much you take for granted," Rigsby told the two hosts. He added that AmCon's goal is to help people move from a state of anxiousness to a state of confidence.
The impetus for change often comes from personal experience, with Pitner recounted his own journey into preparedness after a four-day power outage in Florida. This led him to begin his contingency plans starting with a whole-house generator on propane.
Adams meanwhile highlighted the reliability issues of the modern power grid. The Health Ranger pointed out that the grid is overburdened and not equipped to handle the demand, especially with the influx of electric vehicles. He cited what happened in Texas where the grid wasn't winterized, and people were left without power for days.
Multi-faceted approach to preparedness
AmCon divides preparedness into 12 categories – including food and water, income and economics, health and medical, and communications. Each category is crucial, and the organization provides a structured approach to help individuals and communities prepare.
Rigsby emphasized the importance of a PACE (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency) plan for each category, stressing stressed the need for a primary plan as well as alternatives if that plan fails during a crisis. But while personal preparedness is vital, the strength of a community can make all the difference. AmCon fosters a nationwide network of members who support each other in times of need. (Related: Community preparedness: Building networks for support and resources.)
According to the preparedness expert, AmCon has members in all 50 states and when a crisis hits, they can rely on each other. He cited as an example a member in Mississippi who was stranded after hitting a deer. Within 30 minutes three local members were there to help.
The organization also encourages local chapters, which provide a more immediate support system. Rigsby stressed that community support is essential, and their local chapters can provide immediate assistance.
Rigsby noted that people don't think about the need to prepare until something happens to them. He stressed the need to train people to recognize the signs and take action before it's too late. Pitner echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the need for practical skills.
In the digital age, technology plays a crucial role in preparedness. AmCon offers an app for both iPhone and Android, providing members with checklists, training and a daily situational report. The use of satellite phones and ham radios is also emphasized.
In an increasingly unpredictable world, the need for personal and community preparedness has never been more crucial.Organizations like American Contingency are providing the tools, knowledge, and network to help individuals and communities become more resilient. By embracing a mindset of self-reliance and community support, people can navigate the uncertain times ahead with confidence and resilience.

- Bucket food, consisting of dry, shelf-stable foods stored in airtight five-gallon buckets, is a cost-effective and sustainable way to ensure long-term food security during emergencies. Properly prepared, these foods can last many years.
- Bucket food consists of dry staples like grains, legumes and other essentials that are stored in Mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside five-gallon buckets.
- This type of food storage creates an airtight barrier, preventing spoilage and pest infestation, and is both affordable and customizable to dietary preferences.
- Successful bucket food storage relies on selecting nutrient-dense, versatile foods that your family eats and knows how to prepare.
- Stockpiling bucket food provides security and peace of mind during emergencies, ensuring access to nutritious meals even when grocery stores are closed or supply chains are disrupted.
In a world where natural disasters, power outages and supply chain disruptions are becoming more frequent, being prepared is no longer just a niche hobby — it’s a necessity.
One of the most practical and cost-effective ways to ensure your family has access to nutritious food during an emergency is by stocking up on bucket food. From grains like quinoa to protein-packed staples like pinto beans, storing dry foods in five-gallon buckets is a simple yet powerful strategy for long-term food security. (h/t to NowThatWereAFamily.com)
What is bucket food, and why does it matter?
Bucket food refers to dry, shelf-stable foods stored in airtight containers, typically five-gallon buckets. These buckets are often lined with Mylar bags and paired with oxygen absorbers to extend the shelf life of their contents.
When properly prepared, foods like rice, beans, oats and even pasta can last up to 30 years — making them an ideal choice for emergency preparedness.
The beauty of bucket food lies in its simplicity.
Unlike canned goods or freeze-dried meals, which can be expensive and bulky, bucket food is affordable, easy to store and customizable to your family’s tastes. It’s also a sustainable way to stockpile food without relying on pre-packaged emergency kits that may not suit your dietary preferences. (Related: Debunking the TOP 5 MYTHS about emergency food storage.)
What should you store in your buckets?
The key to successful bucket food storage is choosing items you already eat and know how to prepare.
There’s no point in storing split peas if your family refuses to eat them, no matter how nutritious they are. Instead, focus on versatile, nutrient-dense foods that can form the foundation of countless meals.
Popular options include:
- Grains – Brown rice, quinoa and oats
- Legumes – Pinto beans, black beans, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), lentils and kidney beans
- Other essentials – Himalayan salt, cane sugar, dry milk and popcorn
Quinoa, for example, is a standout choice. It’s a complete protein, cooks quickly and can be used in everything from breakfast bowls to hearty stews.
Pinto beans, on the other hand, are a budget-friendly source of protein and fiber, perfect for soups, burritos or even as a standalone side dish.
The science behind long-term storage
The secret to preserving bucket food for decades lies in the combination of Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. While plastic buckets alone are slightly porous and can allow air to seep in, Mylar bags create an airtight barrier that locks out oxygen — the primary culprit behind food spoilage.
Oxygen absorbers further reduce the oxygen levels inside the bags, ensuring your food stays fresh and free of pests.
This method is so effective that it’s used by professional food storage companies. By mimicking their approach, you can achieve the same level of quality and longevity for a fraction of the cost.
Imagine a scenario where grocery stores are closed or supply chains are disrupted. Having a stockpile of bucket food means you won’t have to worry about where your next meal would come from.
It’s not just about survival — it’s about peace of mind.
Whether you’re a seasoned prepper or just starting your preparedness journey, consider adding a few buckets of quinoa, pinto beans or brown rice to your stockpile. It’s a small step that could make a world of difference when it matters most.

- Thom Rigsby, founder of American Contingency, emphasizes the critical role of community and local networks in disaster preparedness, showcasing how they can serve as lifelines during crises, exemplified by American Contingency's actions in Mississippi.
- Rigsby highlights the importance of both individual preparedness and collective support, drawing from personal experiences and a period of heightened uncertainty (2018-2020) to form an organization focused on practical preparedness skills.
- Rigsby's personal experience with an 11-day power outage and the increasing public awareness of the need for preparedness underscore the importance of proactive planning, often triggered by direct or witnessed crisis experiences.
- American Contingency offers a structured approach to preparedness, dividing it into 12 categories and emphasizing the importance of skills and knowledge over mere stockpiling of equipment, while also facilitating local chapter connections and community support for members.
In a world where the reliability of centralized systems is increasingly in question, the concept of self-reliance is often romanticized. However, the true strength in preparedness lies in the power of community.
American Contingency (AmCon) founder and executive director Thom Rigsby joined the Health Ranger Mike Adams and Todd Pitner in a recent episode of "Decentralize TV," where the preparedness expert highlighted the transformative impact of local networks and how they can serve as lifelines during crises.
From the rescue of a stranded member in Mississippi to the swift response of American Contingency in delivering essential supplies to tornado-stricken Forks, Mississippi, they illustrate the critical role of community in disaster preparedness.
Rigsby emphasized the importance of both individual preparedness and collective support. Growing up on a farm, the AmCon executive director learned the value of self-sufficiency and later applied these principles through his military and business experiences. The timeframe between 2018 and 2020 saw a surge in uncertainty, leading to the formation of AmCon – an organization dedicated to helping people eliminate fear and gain practical preparedness skills.
Rigsby's personal experience with an 11-day power outage in North Alabama solidified his belief in the need for preparedness. This experience, combined with the increasing awareness seen among the general public, underscores the importance of proactive planning. He told Adams and Pitner that while people often need to experience a crisis firsthand to understand the necessity of preparedness, witnessing others' struggles can also prompt action.
"People have to experience a crisis moment for themselves. They have to have that power outage. They have to live in South Texas and have the polar vortex come through and really knock them off their feet. They have to experience that," Rigby said.
Case studies: Local networks in action
One compelling example of the power of local networks is a member from Pennsylvania who was stranded in Mississippi after hitting a deer. Through AmCon's app, the member was able to reach out for help.
Within 30 minutes, three network members arrived to assist, and one even transported the car back to Pennsylvania. This incident demonstrates the immediate and practical support that local networks can provide.
Another striking example is the response to the tornadoes in Forks, Mississippi. The local emergency manager requested plastic totes for survivors to store their belongings.
Fortunately, an AmCon member in Ohio who had thousands of totes sent them down overnight. Such acts of kindness highlight the importance of community support in times of crisis.
While having the right equipment is crucial, Rigsby stressed the importance of skills and knowledge. Owning 12 tourniquets is one thing, but knowing how to use them effectively is another. Pitner emphasized the need for hands-on learning, noting that acquiring skills can be more challenging but ultimately more rewarding than simply stockpiling supplies.
For those interested in joining or starting a local preparedness network, AmCon offers a structured approach. The organization divides preparedness into 12 categories, with a focus on health and medical, food and water, communications, and security. Members can access comprehensive checklists and an onboarding course to assess their current preparedness levels and identify areas for improvement.
AmCon's membership tiers ranging from $5 to $10 per month provide access to a wealth of resources, including a daily situational report, discussion groups and local chapter connections. Pitner, excited about the service, suggested a "buy one, gift one" option to help those in need.
Upon joining, members are connected with local chapters, ensuring they have a support network in their immediate area. Pitner, based in Tampa, expressed enthusiasm about getting involved and contributing to his local community. The organization's regional coordinators help new members connect with local groups or start new chapters if none exist in their area.
The power of local networks in crisis situations cannot be overstated. While individual preparedness is essential, the collective strength of a community can make the difference between survival and resilience. (Related: Community preparedness: Building networks for support and resources.)

Maximum Prepping With Minimum Cash
When people think about preparing for hard times, focusing on immediate needs like food, water, or tools is tempting.
Yet seasoned preppers often describe actual preparedness as a three-legged stool made up of specific supplies (e.g., non-perishable food, water filtration systems), skills (e.g., first aid, gardening), knowledge (e.g., understanding local weather patterns, financial management), and community (e.g., local homesteading groups, neighbors).
Each leg supports the others. If anyone is missing, your homestead or plan wobbles and risks collapsing. It’s not enough to stock up on beans, bullets, and bandages. You also need the know-how to use your supplies and the support of neighbors or like-minded individuals to help trade, defend, or share resources.
Assessing Realistic Threats
Prepping must be grounded in reality. Many new homesteaders or survival-minded folks make the mistake of overreacting to implausible threats like asteroid strikes or zombie invasions.
While having a broad perspective is good, it’s far more important to assess real-world risks. Start by considering the most likely threats in your area, such as a massive snowstorm, a drought, or a financial downturn. Once you identify the most immediate threats, you can build practical plans and learn relevant skills. A good starting point is to create scenario-based decision trees… imagine various challenges and decide how you would act in advance.
Building a Resilient Mindset
A resilient mindset helps you cope with life-altering events. In every historical crisis, those who survived often had an uncanny ability to adapt and persevere. This mental flexibility can be practiced by considering “what if” scenarios, such as losing your home in a flood or supporting relatives in a prolonged blackout.
These mental rehearsals help inoculate you against shock and indecision. And when times do get tough, you’ll be less likely to freeze. A practical example is prepping for grid failure, which happens often enough locally to be worth serious consideration. Think about how you will cook, stay warm, and maintain sanity when the power goes out. This process of mental preparation and problem-solving is what we mean by ‘Building a Resilient Mindset ‘.
Focusing on Skills Over Stuff
Too often, new homesteaders obsess about gear. They’ll buy off-grid gadgets without learning how to fix or operate them or stockpile specialty foods nobody in the family actually eats.
Stuff has its place, but it’s just one leg of the stool. You must learn skills like cooking from scratch, gardening, canning, carpentry, first aid, and perhaps even blacksmithing or small-scale animal husbandry. Tools break. Ingredients run low. But know-how can’t be taken from you once it’s cultivated.
One way to ensure you’re learning what you truly need is to rely more on everyday shelf-stable basics… like rice, beans, and pasta… and to practice cooking them creatively on an alternative heat source, if possible.
Recognizing the Power of Community
The notion of a lone-wolf survivalist is romantic but flawed. Historically, survival has nearly always been a team effort. Communities share skills… one family might excel at growing vegetables while another can repair broken machinery. Even the hardest-working homesteader can’t become an expert at everything.
More importantly, community boosts morale. Knowing you can trade, barter, and watch out for each other increases everyone’s chances of thriving. Take time to befriend neighbors, get involved in church or social groups, and collaborate in good times so you can trust each other in bad times.
Lessons From the Great Depression
Our grandparents and great-grandparents lived through devastating economic turmoil and learned lessons that still apply. Many embraced a “use it up, wear it out” mentality, patching clothes, repurposing scraps, and preserving foods in every way possible.
They also understood the value of living debt-free, maintaining multiple income streams, and learning to improvise. In those days, having a cow and a garden could be the difference between going hungry and being well-fed.
Often, families who farmed and preserved their harvest supported neighbors who had lost everything, illustrating how vital community bonds can be.
Old-Time Survival Wisdom
Daily life in earlier eras required both skill and resourcefulness. People observed nature’s rhythms, could forage for plants and berries, and kept essential livestock to meet year-round needs. Children were taught these skills at a young age, cultivating self-reliance across generations.
Very little went to waste. Even a broken shoe might be repaired with bits of tire, and leftover food scraps usually went to the family pig or compost pile. Today, you can rekindle that spirit by learning to grow herbs on a windowsill, turning old clothing into cleaning rags, or experimenting with preserving methods like fermentation and dehydration.
Adapting to Changing Circumstances
One hallmark of those who thrived during rough times… natural disasters or financial crises… was their ability to adapt. Farmers who lost one crop diversified into others. People who couldn’t find regular jobs became creative, selling skills and wares or moving to where work was available.
The key is to plan for uncertainty. That doesn’t mean living in fear or gloom. Rather, it means accumulating skills, building relationships, saving money where you can, and staying open to new opportunities. If you’re physically, mentally, and emotionally prepared, the unknown becomes less daunting.
Carrying Forward a Legacy of Hope
Homesteading, at its core, connects you to the land and older self-sufficiency traditions. A rich heritage of helpfulness, neighborly generosity, and resilience guided families through the Great Depression and other crises.
As you plan your food storage or map out alternative power sources, remember that hardship can often be best overcome by leaning on one another. Cultivating a spirit of gratitude, humor, and hope sustains the body and mind.
The wisdom of old-timers reminds us that true wealth lies in strong roots, shared efforts, and a steadfast belief that tomorrow can be a little brighter if we work together today.
