Tom Woods: Ron Paul campaign chairman Jesse Benton is going to head up the campaign of Mitch McConnell. Gee, now why did those incorrigible naysayers have so many unkind words for him?
People who said Benton was positioning himself all along for bigger things in the GOP were scoffed at. Why, Jesse has a secret plan to get Ron Paul the nomination at the last minute!
Well, now we know the real secret plan.
Ask yourself this: how much money would you have to be paid to work for an enemy of the things you’re supposed to stand for?
Maybe now people will understand why Jesse would fly into a tirade after some of Ron’s most heroic moments, when the rest of us were cheering.
I could go through a lengthy catalogue of problems with Benton.
The grassroots folks already know a lot of them, so there’s probably no need. What’s done is done.
Not that the world revolves around me, but just a word about how I was treated.

Liberty Groups a Front for the Republican Machine

Thank you Mr. Woods, you inspired me to speak up.
In an effort to believe that I was the only one experiencing this vortex in the liberty movement – I have kept my mouth shut. But no more – after reading Mr. Woods ‘ article about his experience with Jesse Benton and Campaign for Liberty (C4L), I think it is important to speak out and speak the truth.
Several “liberty-oriented” groups have completely ignored my candidacy for Congress because I refuse to run as part of the Republican machine. I told them I would not run Republican because I know how corrupt the Republican machine is (remember, these are groups that claim to be non-partisan). I think we witnessed how corrupt the Republican machine is with how they have treated delegates in the States and at the convention.
Campaign for Liberty has ignored my request for a survey and to be included in their survey (which I answered some time ago and sent to both the national and Colorado contacts). The Colorado director was an interim, and has changed again – they refuse to post my answers in a timely fashion up on their website so that people who are a part of this organization can see that I am a candidate who supports the Constitution.
Why won’t they post my answers? Because they are supporting the Republican – the Republican even though the Republican does not speak up for Constitutional government. Campaign for Liberty is a front for the Republican machine.
Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) has ignored my request to be connected with other liberty-candidates in their organization. I don’t want their endorsement, I don’t want their money (they have a PAC) – all I have wanted is to be connected with other people (e.g. their membership that would theoretically support a young liberty candidate like myself), and their executive director, among others in the organization, just ignore me. I don’t exist. Stupid little girl, right? All of the people they support are Republican and men. Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) is a front for the Republican machine.
Several other people associated with the “liberty-movement” had urged me to run Republican (my race would have been over awhile ago) and then did not follow through with their commitments to work with me. They are a front for the Republican machine.
Strangely silent – the people you thought were leaders – the people who are Republican, the people who tell you over and over that to “win”, you have to infiltrate the machine. Let me tell you something – you don’t win by fixing a broken system – you build a new one.

Ron Paul was denied the nomination by the RNC. Jesse Benton has gone his own way. Gary Johnson wasn't endorsed. Rand Paul hasn't been dubbed the new boss. Ron Paul isn't running third-party.
Shouldn't these things mean that the Daily Paul would dry up and disappear?
But in fact, there has been excellent content and discussion. The grass roots are growing into a friggin' tree here. There is hope for Ron Paul to run again in 2016, and people are keeping their eyes on other important offices up for grabs.
Do you know what this reminds me of? Hope. I don't mean Obama "hope". I mean something more like "Jakob the Liar" kind of hope...though I think we're a bit more optimistic.
No matter what the power-lusting politicians do, we have formed our army. We're a rag-tag bunch of who-knows-what, and we're regularly clicking the "reload" button on the Daily Paul website, but the unavoidable fact is that we are still here.
Yes, we are still here.

In response to yesterday's announcement from the Federal Reserve, Congressman Ron Paul issues the following statement:
"No one is surprised by the Fed's action today to inject even more money into the economy through additional asset purchases. The Fed's only solution for every problem is to print more money and provide more liquidity. Mr. Bernanke and Fed governors appear not to understand that our current economic malaise resulted directly because of the excessive credit the Fed already pumped into the system.
"For all of its vaunted policy tools, the Fed now finds itself repeating the same basic action over and over in an attempt to prime the economy with more debt and credit. But this latest decision to provide more quantitative easing will only prolong our economic stagnation, corrupt market signals, and encourage even more misallocation and malinvestment of resources. Rather than stimulating a real recovery by focusing on a strong dollar and market interest rates, the Fed's announcement today shows a disastrous detachment from reality on the part of our central bank. Any further quantitative easing from the Fed, in whatever form, will only make our next economic crash that much more serious."

"Everything will collapse" is the consequence Gloom, Boom, & Doom's Marc Faber sees from the Fed's latest 'stimulus' (and the fallacy and misconception of how money-printing can help employment). In a wondrously clarifying interview on Bloomberg TV this morning, Faber explained why he was 'happy', since "the asset values of his holdings will go up" but as a responsible citizen he is worried because "the monetary policies of the US will destroy the world." It truly is class warfare under a veil of 'its good for you' as he notes: "the fallacy of monetary policy in the U.S. is to believe this money will go to the man on the street. It won't. It goes to the Mayfair economy of the well-to-do people and boosts asset prices of Warhols." Congratulations, Mr. Bernanke.

Arizona’s State Convention was a joke. Liberty delegates and their votes were cast aside and left out in the cold despite having a massive voting bloc.

I discovered Mitch McConnell on May 22, 2010.
Of course, as a budding young politico, I had followed Sen. McConnell for more than a decade. I respected his achievements and understood his importance, but it was that day that I was first allowed an inside look at the man who led my party in the United States Senate.
May 22 was five days after Rand Paul’s primary victory and any celebration we enjoyed had been short-lived. The liberal media was circling, the national Democratic machine was cranking up its attacks and Kentucky Republicans were deeply divided after a contentious spring campaign. The tea party won the primary, but the tea party alone would not be enough to win a general election in a state where Democrats held a 2-to-1 registration advantage.
Rand and I rode to Frankfort that morning not knowing what to expect. What we experienced was a very real GOP Unity Rally that had been put together by the only man capable of doing so: Senator Mitch McConnell.

What if they both support the authority of the federal government to spy on Americans without search warrants?
What if they both support confining foreigners, uncharged and untried, in Guantanamo Bay?
What if they both believe the president can arrest without charge and confine without trial any American he hates or fears?
What if they both believe in secret courts — kept away from the public and the press — that can take away the rights of Americans?
What if they both think the president can disregard the Constitution when it comes to the rights of those the government has confined to speedy trials, to confront witnesses and evidence against them, and to counsel of their choosing?
What if they both believe the government can use evidence obtained under torture at trials in American courts?
What if they both think the president can incarcerate those he once prosecuted, even after acquittal?
What if both major presidential candidates believe they can fight any war, assassinate any foe or assault any country using the military or the CIA, and they need not ask Congress for a declaration of war as the Constitution requires, nor account to Congress or the public as the law requires?
What if they both want American troops to remain in Afghanistan, even though no foreign country in history has successfully done so, and even though the culture in Afghanistan is as lawless, as vicious to women and children, and as harmless to America today as it was when President Bush invaded it in 2001?
What if they both think this costly and fruitless war — the longest in American history — is somehow good for American freedom and security, even though most Americans do not?
What if they both refuse to understand that the longer we are killing people in foreign lands who can cause us no real harm the more likely will people from those lands come here and bring us real harm?
What if they both believe in adding to the government's $16 trillion debt and letting future generations deal with paying it back?
What if they both want to have the feds spend more money next year than the feds are spending this year?
What if they both accept FDR- and LBJ-style entitlements, even though they are nowhere authorized by the Constitution and there are not enough present-day workers to tax in order to pay for them?
What if President Obama wants to raise taxes by increasing some tax rates on the rich?
What if Gov. Romney wants to raise taxes by eliminating some tax deductions available to the rich?
What if raising taxes on anyone in a recession will cause higher unemployment?
What if they both believe in borrowing newly printed money from the Federal Reserve in order to fund the government?
What if Obama is of the view that the federal government can tell you how to live and keep you from becoming too rich?
What if Romney wants to make the same federal government more effective and efficient at what it does?
What if Obama is really a Marxist who rejects personal freedom, natural rights and private property?
What if Romney is really an empty suit who doesn't know or won't say what he believes?
What if Obama really wants all health care providers to work for the federal government?
What if Romney spent the entire presidential primary season condemning Obamacare, only to say this past weekend that there are parts of it he really likes and will endeavor to retain?

What if Romney spent the entire presidential primary season running against conservative and libertarian opponents and arguing that only the free market or the states should address health care, but earlier this week accepted a major federal role in its management?
What if Obama will have the feds tell you what doctor to see and tell the doctor what procedures to administer?
What if Romney consistently blasted the concept that Congress can constitutionally force you to buy health care coverage you don't want to buy, but now accepts the concept that Congress can constitutionally force insurance companies to sell you health care coverage they don't want to sell?
What if the system is fixed?

As a direct consequence of the over-the-top corruption of the RNC at the convention, I've closed my pocketbook.
As we approach November, the pleas for cash are piling in my email and paper mail boxes, and they're going unanswered.
It could be that a liberty candidate here and there will get my attention though means other than begging for donations and I might send some money to those so deserved, but I guarantee that I won't send a dime to any beggars, period. And ordinary Republicans, faux tea partiers, and supposed 'liberty' lip-synchers are cut off forever.

Now, this could be a major turn of events if more electors would choose not to nominate Romney.
At least three Republican electors say they may not support their party's presidential ticket when the Electoral College meets in December to formally elect the new president, escalating tensions within the GOP and adding a fresh layer of intrigue to the final weeks of the White House race.
The electors – all are supporters of former GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul – told The Associated Press they are exploring options should Mitt Romney win their states. They expressed frustration at how Republican leaders have worked to suppress Paul's conservative movement and his legion of loyal supporters.
"They've never given Ron Paul a fair shot, and I'm disgusted with that. I'd like to show them how disgusted I am," said Melinda Wadsley, an Iowa mother of three who was selected a Republican elector earlier this year. She said she believes Paul is the better choice and noted that the Electoral College was founded with the idea that electors wouldn't just mimic the popular vote.

The Obama administration had some harsh words Friday after a federal judge appointed by Obama said the government doesn't have a right to indefinitely detain anyone even remotely associated with terrorist groups.
Judge Katherine B. Forrest permanently blocked the government from enforcing the National Defense Authorization Act, claiming it was too vague and would have a "chilling effect" on free speech.

To President Obama: The 2nd Amendment Is About Fighting Tyranny, Not Hunting Deer - Michael Scheuer

Soon after the Denver shootings, President Obama said it was time to put stricter gun-control measures in place. With the failure of Attorney General Holder’s “Fast and Furious” ploy to void the 2nd Amendment, it seems Obama thought he might capitalize on the Denver shootings to further damage the Constitution. The negative public reaction to his words, however, sent Obama backtracking, and senior Democrats like Senator Reid and Representative Pelosi quickly made public remarks to bury the issue — for now.
Before moving on, it is worth noting that Obama said gun laws must be changed but only in a way that protected Americans’ cherished tradition of hunting. Well, hunting game is not the central concern of the 2nd Amendment. What is central is that the 2nd Amendment protects the right of Americans to be armed in case they decide there is a need, in Jefferson’s words, “to alter or to abolish [the government]” and “to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
In creating the 2nd Amendment, the Founders — through James Madison‘s pen — took their cue from the British Bill of Rights (1689) which recognized that an unarmed populace could not protect its rights, liberty, and economic welfare against a king backed by a standing army, and so it allowed for an armed populace. The Founders also recalled that when London cracked down on New England’s resistance to the Crown, one of British General Thomas Gates’ first moves was to try to seize the munitions and ordnance the colonists had stockpiled around Boston. One reason for the British Army’s ill-fated expedition to Lexington and Concord in April, 1775, for example, was to capture the colonists’ stores of cannon, muskets, and munitions.
Even before Jefferson’s declaration, therefore, what in today’s parlance is called “gun control” was seen by Americans for what it was and is, a policy instituted by an oppressive government that fears its population and therefore aims at ensuring that citizens cannot arm to resist its will. The 2nd Amendment is meant, in part, to make sure that if the federal government created by the Constitution turns oppressive, Americans will have arms with which to defend their liberties and welfare.
And this right is much more important today than it was when the 2nd Amendment was drafted because the federal government has over time deliberately and probably unconstitutionally eradicated the 2nd Amendment’s other anti-oppression provision, the one that made sure the several state governments had well-regulated — that is, well-trained — militias at their command. The state militias were of course meant to assist the U.S. government’s standing army in case of foreign attack or domestic insurrection, but they also were meant to defend the states and their populations if the federal government used its standing army to willfully violate the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, or acted in a manner harmful to the peoples’ security, economic welfare, and/or their society’s social cohesion.
Except for Alexander Hamilton and a few other of the Founders, both Federalists and Anti-Federalists were very wary of — indeed, many hated — the idea of maintaining a strong standing army in time of peace, seeing it as an all-too-easy-to-use tool of would-be tyrants. The 2nd Amendment took cognizance of this historically genuine danger and established two hedges against it, an armed citizenry and effective state militias. The much stronger hedge — state militias — is long gone, and only the weaker hedge of an armed citizenry remains. And there seems nothing outrageous about the idea that, as the 2nd Amendment allowed citizens to be ready to resist federal-government oppression by matching it musket-for-musket in the 1790s, today’s citizens ought to be free to face the same potential threat of tyranny assault rifle-for-assault rifle.
Now, in response to the foregoing, I am sure President Obama and other recent presidents, their administrations, and their media shills would argue there is no chance of the federal government ever acting in a manner so oppressive to the liberty and welfare of Americans that the latter would decide to take up arms against it. And they may well be right. I hope they are.
But just for the sake of argument, let us imagine a future circumstance — far off and wildly unlikely though it may be — in which the federal government did violate the Constitution, threaten the destruction of the U.S. economy, tore the fabric of American society, and made the American political system a cesspool of financial corruption. And to add to the unreality of our scenario, let us further imagine that these actions are much more substantively threatening than those which motivated the Founding Fathers to rebel against Britain and those that led to the creation of the Confederate States of America and a civil war.
Just imagine, for example,
–1.) That a single unelected federal bureaucrat issues a mandate that clearly violates the 1st Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom for more than 70 million American Catholics, Jews, and Muslims.
–2.) That multiple U.S. presidents take the United States to war without the formal declaration of war irrefutably demanded by the U.S. Constitution, and then intentionally fail to win the wars they start and so kill thousands of America‘s solider-children for nothing.
–3.) That the federal government each year reaches into its citizens’ pockets and takes between $40 and $50 billion dollars and then gives it to foreigners, even in times when 25-percent of America’s youngsters are malnourished, more than 8 percent of Americans are unemployed, and the country’s critical infrastructure is crumbling.
–4.) That senior elected officials in both parties, as well as senior federal bureaucrats constantly leak highly classified intelligence information to advance their partisan interests and thereby knowingly undermine U.S. national security.
–5.) That presidents and attorney generals from both parties pick and choose what laws they will enforce, in direct and flagrant violation of the oath to execute all laws that the Constitution mandates they swear on taking office.
–6.) That a long list of presidential administrations under both parties refuse to enforce laws designed to control U.S. borders, thereby knowingly compromising U.S. security and causing several U.S. states to have their economies damaged and social fabric weakened. In addition, imagine that those federal administrations also take legal action to prevent state governors from defending their populations.
–7.) That the Congress and the Senate regularly and knowingly act to bankrupt and destroy such essential national institutions as the Social Security Administration and the U.S. Post Office by siphoning off their funds for other pet or less-important projects.
–8.) That cabinet members and would-be cabinet members who do not file income tax returns, leak classified intelligence information, mislead Congress, and knowingly hire illegal aliens are never prosecuted.
–9.) That the federal government so overspends the public treasury that the national debt can never be repaid, and that in funding the debt it also compromises U.S. independence and citizens’ economic well-being via massive borrowing from malign foreign powers and by exacting half-a-year’s wages from each American taxpayer.
–10.) That the unaccountable U.S. Supreme Court interprets the Constitution in a way that makes the nation’s political system a cesspool of financial corruption, endorses the murder of more than 50 million-plus unborn U.S. citizens, and empowers the federal government to wage unrelenting war on religion, especially on Christianity.
–11.) That the federal government’s executive and legislative branches permit multiple lobbies to act as agents of foreign powers to corrupt our political system; to influence our foreign policy in a manner destructive of U.S. security and leading to war; and then protects them by not making them register as agents of foreign powers and by passing “hate-speech laws” — the latter a clear violation of the 1st Amendment.
12.) That the federal education department ensures the school curriculum taught to U.S. children negatively distorts U.S. history, denigrates the Founding Fathers, and keeps students ignorant of the meaning and purposes of the country’s founding documents — such as the 2nd Amendment of the Bill of Rights.
While it is hard, nay, nearly impossible to imagine that even one — let alone all — of these severely oppressive and destructive actions could be deliberately perpetrated by the federal government, we each learn over the course of a lifetime never to say never. And if the sorry day ever dawns when one or more of the above depredations occur, I would suggest Americans might well think about taking recourse to the arms guaranteed them by the 2nd Amendment, arms with which to defend their liberty, economic welfare, national independence, and their Constitution’s viability.
And who knows what the future will bring, some of the foregoing hard-to-imagine actions may not be all so far fetched. If one or more came to pass, I suppose the 2nd Amendment would be the last, best resort for Americans after, as Jefferson recommended, a patient and prolonged effort to peacefully undo the oppressive measures imposed on them. “Prudence, indeed,” Jefferson wrote, “will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.”
At day’s end, then, the 2nd Amendment exists to permit American citizens to perform the “duty” Jefferson describes by resisting and defeating with arms a federal government that knowingly produces a “train of abuses and usurpations” that is designed “to reduce them under absolute Despotism.” The 2nd Amendment should not be altered or diluted a whit, but should stand, as the Founders intended, as a stark reminder to all elected federal officials and their bureaucrats that, in extremis, the 2nd Amendment ensures that Americans have the right and the means with which to hunt down and remove those who use the federal government to oppress them.

Referred by one of the most respected elder attorneys in the country a major mover and shaker in the US has been in touch with me. After numerous conversations he has decided to make a big move: he is promising to bring us a minimum of 1.2 million votes and up to 1.5 million, all as write-ins, where possible, for Dr. Ron Paul.
This is an Ethnic United Establishment, which will vote as one block. Previously, they voted for Obama (about 900,00 votes) but are entirely disillusioned, and they know the agony they've suffered.
They are also highly disenfrachised by Romney, who failed to contact them.
They love the fact that Ron Paul people are liberty-minded and are willing to talk to them. As one massive unit they want to support the liberty movement forever. In fact, they are so fired up they wish to lend support to every one of our liberty candidates, including Ron Paul and far beyond.
This is happening on the eve of the launch of the new vote counting and confirming Website, www.WriteInRon2012.com
Many of us have been praying for a miracle--and many of us have never relented in that belief. No doubt, God works in mysterious ways. Many of us have felt that because of all the good that this movement represents, we will be blessed. This could be one of those divine blessings.
The Obama people have already wooed them. Romney gave them no creedence, though they were willing to receive him. However, we the Ron Paul people are reaching out, and thank God they have accepted. Furthermore, they are willing to vote on principle just to make the point, that they are sick and tired of that old party system bloated with false promises.
This is the real deal. We are taking these votes AWAY from Obama and Romney. Here is what he requested:
* who are our favorite, dedicated liberty candidates who will support our freedoms and the Constitution--and who are real RP people (bring the troops home, end the Fed, and more)
* when are such candidates up for re-election
* what is each candidate's district and state
* will our movement be willing to raise money to fund such candidates, which will be matched by the ethnic block
He is excited, too, that through www.WriteInRon2012.com the votes of all liberty candidates will be counted and confirmed.
This is the intial post. Who can help me achieve this? SovereignJanice work is thorough. However, it must be vetted to be 1000% sure that the candidates truly are what they claim. Bottom line: if we do this right, they will remain a part of this liberty movement forever. Let's, thus, gather together the list of our best candidates. This group has promised to vote for them.
Bottom line: this man said, "We want to get behnd the liberty movement and vote for Ron Paul but really aim to support all future liberty candidates. We need your help as quickly as possible, so we can organize this effort."

Federal Reserve accused of setting U.S. up for 'crash'

The Federal Reserve, that private organization that determines interest rates and the availability of money in America, is going to be examined by a congressional committee whose chairman is worried it is setting the nation up “for a much larger crash in future.”
The plans for a review of Fed actions were announced today by U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, who heads the Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology Subcommittee.
The hearing will focus on the Fed’s recent practice of essentially loaning money to large banks and others for no interest at all.
“The Federal Reserve is relentless in pursuing a policy of zero interest rates, as manifest by their decision last week to engage in another round of quantitative easing and keep the federal funds rate at zero for another three years,” Paul said.
There are answers to your questions about the complicated Federal Reserve issue in “End the Fed,” “No More National Debt” and “The Case Against the Fed.”
Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke announced just days ago another round of money printing by the U.S. government.
The Fed’s third attempt at such a maneuver will involve having the government buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month, with no set end date.
There is a petition process set up to urge members of Congress to act on plans to audit the Fed.
The central bank’s objective is to keep interest rates low, and thus trigger more spending and more hiring. The Fed has been trying to impact the economy for the duration of Barack Obama’s tenure in the White House, but its usual tool – lowering interest rates – is ineffective now since those rates have been approaching zero for most of that time.
Paul for years has advocated a full audit of the Federal Reserve, which routinely shrouds its actions in secrecy. Just last week, the U.S. House on a 327-98 vote adopted a bill that would set an audit process in motion. It now is going to the Senate, where Sen. Harry Reid previously has been receptive to the idea, although there’s no word whether he’ll take time for it now.
“The Fed is intent on ignoring that their policy of low interest rates in the past brought us the financial crisis of 2008 and their zero interest rate policy of today is prolonging the agony while sowing the seeds for a much larger crash in future,” Paul said today.
“Their manipulation of interest rates – essentially price setting – can only ever have destructive effects on the American economy. Artificially low interest rates continue to cause malinvestment and misallocation of resources throughout the economy. Savers and investors suffer from negative real interest rates, while the federal government takes advantage of the Fed’s zero interest rate policy to run up gargantuan fiscal deficits.
“These problems cannot and will not be remedied until the Fed stops manipulating the price of money,” he said.
The hearing is called, “The Price of Money: Consequences of the Federal Reserve’s Zero Interest Rate Policy,” and will be held on Sept. 21st, at 9:30 a.m. in room 2128 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington.
Among those expected to testify are James Grant, editor of Grant’s Interest Rate Observer, and Lewis E. Lehrman, senior partner, L.E. Lehrman & Co.

Paul long has argued that the Federal Reserve simply is illegal. Some of his concerns have revolved around Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, which assigns to Congress the right to coin money.
There is no mention in the Constitution of a central bank, and it wasn’t until the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 that the Fed was created.
Paul previously has said, “Throughout its nearly 100-year history, the Federal Reserve has presided over the near-complete destruction of the United States dollar. Since 1913 the dollar has lost over 95 percent of its purchasing power, aided and abetted by the Federal Reserve’s loose monetary policy.”
And he’s proposed repeatedly the idea of auditing the Fed to determine exactly what it has been doing and then begin making corrections. With a book titled “End the Fed,” he’s made no secret of his ultimate goal.
That the Fed is at least partly to blame for the financial problems that have developed in the U.S. seems not to be in dispute.
It was longtime Federal Reserve chairman Ben. S. Bernanke who admitted as much.
Bernanke said it was the Fed that caused the Great Depression, the worldwide economic downturn that persisted from 1929 until about 1939. It was the longest and worst depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world. While originating in the U.S., it ended up causing drastic declines in output, severe unemployment and acute deflation in virtually every country on earth. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, “the Great Depression ranks second only to the Civil War as the gravest crisis in American history.”
At a Nov. 8, 2002, conference to honor economist Milton Friedman’s 90th birthday, Bernanke, then a Federal Reserve governor, gave a speech at Friedman’s old home base, the University of Chicago.
After citing how Friedman and a co-author documented the Fed’s continual contraction of the money supply during the Depression and its aftermath – and the subsequent abandonment of the gold standard by many nations in order to stop the devastating monetary contraction – Bernanke added:Before the creation of the Federal Reserve, Friedman and [Anna] Schwartz noted, bank panics were typically handled by banks themselves – for example, through urban consortiums of private banks called clearinghouses. If a run on one or more banks in a city began, the clearinghouse might declare a suspension of payments, meaning that, temporarily, deposits would not be convertible into cash. Larger, stronger banks would then take the lead, first, in determining that the banks under attack were in fact fundamentally solvent, and second, in lending cash to those banks that needed to meet withdrawals. Though not an entirely satisfactory solution – the suspension of payments for several weeks was a significant hardship for the public – the system of suspension of payments usually prevented local banking panics from spreading or persisting. Large, solvent banks had an incentive to participate in curing panics because they knew that an unchecked panic might ultimately threaten their own deposits.It was in large part to improve the management of banking panics that the Federal Reserve was created in 1913. However, as Friedman and Schwartz discuss in some detail, in the early 1930s the Federal Reserve did not serve that function. The problem within the Fed was largely doctrinal: Fed officials appeared to subscribe to Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon’s infamous “liquidationist” thesis, that weeding out “weak” banks was a harsh but necessary prerequisite to the recovery of the banking system. Moreover, most of the failing banks were small banks (as opposed to what we would now call money-center banks) and not members of the Federal Reserve System. Thus the Fed saw no particular need to try to stem the panics. At the same time, the large banks – which would have intervened before the founding of the Fed – felt that protecting their smaller brethren was no longer their responsibility. Indeed, since the large banks felt confident that the Fed would protect them if necessary, the weeding out of small competitors was a positive good, from their point of view.In short, according to Friedman and Schwartz, because of institutional changes and misguided doctrines, the banking panics of the Great Contraction were much more severe and widespread than would have normally occurred during a downturn. …History records that in 1913 President Woodrow Wilson approved the Federal Reserve Act but later reflected that his actions “unwittingly ruined my country.”
Wilson said that since the U.S. system of credit is concentrated in the hands of a few, “we have become … one of the most completely controlled and dominated governments in the civilized world.”
