In Case You Missed It: Ron Paul Supporters in Iowa Make GOP Inroads for RNC and Long-term Battle of Ideas

“A rising tide of Republicans who share Ron Paul’s philosophy of limited government are flooding into GOP party roles in Iowa.” – Des Moines Register

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – Supporters of 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul were elected last night to state Republican Partypositions helpful for his delegate-attainment strategy, and for ensuring that constitutionally-limited government has a voice in the state party. At four district conventions held Saturday, party activists tied to Paul won seats in the state nomination committee that selects at-large delegates to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, and in the state central committee, writes the influential Des Moines Register.

Ron Paul backers sweep into GOP party roles in Iowa

    A
rising tide of Republicans who share Ron Paul’s philosophy of limited government are flooding into GOP party roles in Iowa.

Like the anti-abortion movement and tea partiers that made in-roads into GOP politics here in recent years, Paul loyalists want to send a message to party leaders, the governor, the state legislature and the nation, they said Saturday.

Six of the new Iowa GOP state central committee members elected Saturday have publicly expressed support for Paul, a libertarian-leaning presidential candidate: Joel Kurtinitis, Kris Thiessen, Dave Cushman, Jeff Shipley, John Kabitzke and Marcus Fedler. Two more have close ties.

“Ron Paul’s display of strength is to encourage their followers to say, ‘We have the numbers. Join us and we can accomplish even more,’” said Gopal Krishna, a popular longtime central committee member who has declined to reveal his caucus vote. “Because once they’re a force to be reckoned with, everybody starts to cater to them.”

Despite Downpour Ron Paul Draws 4,300-plus to Rally on Independence Mall in Philadelphia

Thousands brave rainy weather to greet Paul near birthplace of where founders envisioned a small federal government of the kind Paul promotes

LAKE JACKSON, Texas – 2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul drew a remarkable 4,300-plus voters to a major campaign rally he held on the Independence Mall in Philadelphia despite poor weather conditions that would have kept supporters of other candidates away.

Event organizers noted that, despite the inclement weather, supporters and undecided voters greeted the 12-term Congressman from Texas with the characteristic enthusiasm for which his crowds are known. It had rained all day and with chilly temperatures to boot, many attendees responded that they were cold, uncomfortable, and feeling poorly. And yet, the people persevered for Paul.

Also noteworthy is that the campaign event took place in the footsteps of America’s modern founders, who conceptualized, advocated for, and created a modest federal government of the kind Ron Paul has been promoting for more than three decades.

Ron Paul’s campaign rally took place on the lawn at the Independence Mall Visitors Center, located at 1 North Independence Mall West (b/t Market and Arch Streets), Philadelphia, PA 19106. The rally commenced at 1:00 p.m. ET, while Congressman Paul addressed the crowd at around 2:30 p.m. Dr. Paul discussed his platform of constitutionally-limited government, the restoration of our civil and economic liberties, and provisions of his path-breaking ‘Plan to Restore America.’ In addition to keynote speaker Ron Paul, featured speakers included Paul backers Pennsylvania State Senator Mike Folmer (R-Lebanon) and former CIA officer and Bin Laden Unit leader Michael Scheuer, both of whom have endorsed him for the presidency.

A photograph of Ron Paul’s Philadelphia campaign rally with 4,300-plus people on Independence Mall follows.

Obama Worse than Bush on Civil Liberties – Romney No Different From Obama

The top story currently at The Daily Caller features former Bush Department of Justice official John Yoo making some interesting observations:
The Obama administration’s use of executive power has gone further than the Bush administration’s toward diminishing Americans’ civil liberties, author John Yoo told The Daily Caller…

Yoo said the anti-war movement has not criticized President Barack Obama, despite his administration’s formalization of a process for “targeted killing[s]” of American citizens without trial.

“You don’t see the same critics who so thrashed President Bush, for allegedly thinking he was a king, making the same arguments and engaging in the same criticism of President Obama,” Yoo told TheDC.

When “Torture Memos” author and “enhanced interrogations” inventor John Yoo is calling you out for being bad on civil liberties–and he’s right–you’ve got problems.

Worse, we all have problems. Big ones. If Bush was controversial for allowing terror suspects to be arrested and held indefinitely without trial, Obama’s National Defense Authorization Act allows American citizens to be arrested and held indefinitely without trial. This is unprecedented in our history.

It has become a general conservative consensus that the NDAA is bad legislation because it gives the Executive branch unconstitutional and dangerous new powers. Conservative champions in the Senate like Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Jim DeMint have fought against the NDAA’s indefinite detention provision and Rep. Justin Amash has spearheaded this effort in the House.

When Obama signed NDAA he said ”My administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens.”

This pretty much cemented the conservative consensus on NDAA–no president, and especially Obama, should be able to throw American citizens in jail indefinitely without trial or due process.

Mitt Romney disagrees. Not only would he sign NDAA without hesitation, his position is essentially no different from Obama’s. Watch this video:

Said Romney: “There are a lot of things that I think this president does wrong. Lots of them. But I don’t think he’s going to abuse this power. I know that if I were president I wouldn’t abuse this power.”

Giving the Executive Branch unprecedented new powers and then trusting Obama or Romney not to abuse them–who do these people think they’re kidding?

Conservatives at the grassroots have come out in opposition to NDAA in full force. Romney still doesn’t get it:

If you want to toss the Constitution in the
trash can vote for Obama or Romney. If you want to uphold it vote Ron Paul.
