What Is Happening In Ukraine Is Far More Important Than Most People Realize

What Is Happening In Ukraine Is Far More Important Than Most People Realize

By Michael Snyder, on February 24th, 2014

What the people of Ukraine are being put through is absolutely horrible. They are caught in the middle of a massive tug of war between the East and the West, and they are paying a great price for it. Ultimately, Ukraine will end up either being dominated by Russia (a bad outcome) or by the EU and the United States (another bad outcome). Most Ukrainians just want to be free and want to be able to build a better future for themselves and their families, but it is extremely unlikely that they will be able to escape the specter of foreign domination. Meanwhile, the violence in Ukraine is planting the seeds for a potentially much larger conflict down the road. The days of "friendly relations" between the United States and Russia are now gone. Russia is absolutely furious that the U.S. has fueled a violent revolution on its own border, and it is something that Russian officials will not forget for a very long time. In return, U.S. officials are taking an increasingly harsh stance toward Russia. In the end, the seeds that are being planted right now could ultimately blossom into a full-blown conflict between the superpowers in the years to come.

Let there be no mistake - the United States is heavily involved in what is going on in Ukraine. Even the New York Times admits this. And the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine and the Assistant Secretary of State have been caught on tape discussing their next moves in getting a new government installed in Ukraine.

In addition, a number of non-governmental organizations inside the United States have allegedly been assisting and organizing the revolution in Ukraine for a long time. At least a few of these organizations have ties to George Soros. This is something that I discussed in a previous article.
Some of the "progressive" NGOs that have been accused of fueling the violent revolution in Ukraine include the National Endowment for Democracy, Freedom House, and the Open Society Foundations (formerly known as the Open Society Institute).

Please don't misunderstand me. I am not taking sides. I am just pointing out that both sides in Ukraine are controlled. If I was living in Ukraine, I would want both Russia and the United States to go away and leave Ukraine alone.

Instead, Ukraine is being used as a battleground to fight a proxy war between the East and the West. Now that the opposition has gained the upper hand, it does not appear that Russian officials are in any mood to recognize the new "government"...
Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on Monday said Russia had grave doubts about the legitimacy of those in power in Ukraine following President Viktor Yanukovich's ouster, saying their recognition by some states was an "aberration".
Medvedev also stated that he has "big doubts about the legitimacy of a whole series of organs of power that are now functioning there."

Last Friday, an agreement was signed by the two sides in Ukraine that was supposed to bring about a peaceful resolution to all of this. But the revolutionaries reneged on the deal and toppled the government instead. Needless to say, Russia was quite horrified by this...
The Russian Foreign Ministry criticized the West for turning a blind eye to what Moscow described as the opposition reneging on its agreement signed Friday to form a unity government and aiming to “suppress dissent in various regions of Ukraine with dictatorial and, sometimes, even terrorist methods.”
So what does Russia plan to do?

That is the big question that everyone is asking.

They are not doing much of anything just yet. But there have been rumors that we could potentially see some economic blowback...
Russia and the Customs Union could temporarily limit increased-risk food imports from Ukraine, given fears of loose safety control, said Sergei Dankvert, head of the Russian veterinary and phytosanitary oversight service Rosselkhoznadzor.

"My Belarusian colleague and I are extremely concerned about the situation in Ukraine. We do not rule out that curbs could be introduced on the imports of products of high veterinary and phytosanitary risks from Ukraine," Dankvert told Interfax after talks with his Belarusian counterpart Yury Pivovarchik in Bryansk, and telephone talks with Ukraine's Deputy Agrarian Policy Minister Ivan Bisyuk.
Of course what the U.S. government is most concerned about is any military action that Russia might take.

National Security Adviser Susan Rice says that what has happened in Ukraine reflects "the will of the Ukrainian people and the interests of the United States and Europe" and that it would be a "grave mistake" for Russia to get militarily involved.

But whatever happens over the next few days, nobody should think that the Russians are simply going to abandon their interests in Ukraine. Russia has a very important military base down in the Crimea, and the eastern half of the country is very pro-Russian.

So the struggle between East and West in Ukraine is likely to continue for quite some time to come. The following is an excerpt from a recent WND article...
The issue with Ukraine is whether it will join the E.U. or Putin’s Eurasian Union. The country is roughly divided on this issue between eastern and western Ukraine. The eastern portion wants to remain with Russia while the western side wants to move closer with the West.

In southern Ukraine, where the Crimea is located, Russian influence remains strong.

Because demonstrators who want to see Ukraine lean westward have become emboldened with their immediate success of ousting Yanukovich, it could make it more difficult for them to come to terms with any settlement agreement to reunify the country.

Moscow has a large naval military facility in Sevastopol in the Crimea and recently received a 25-year lease extension to 2042, with another five-year renewal option until 2047. In exchange, Ukraine received a multiyear discounted contract for much-needed natural gas.
And the pro-Russian eastern half of the country is actually the stronger of the two halves economically. So this will likely complicate matters for the EU and the U.S. as they try to bring Ukraine into their sphere of influence...
Seven of Ukraine’s 10 largest private companies by revenue are either headquartered or maintain the majority of their operations in eastern Ukraine. These firms are owned by some of Ukraine’s wealthiest and most influential individuals. Three of these 10 corporations — mining and steel company Metinvest, energy firm DTEK and its subsidiary Donetskstal — are based in the eastern industrial city of Donetsk and are owned by Ukraine’s wealthiest man, Rinat Akhmetov. Interpipe, the company that controls 10 percent of the world market share of railway wheels and more than 11 percent of the world market share of manganese ferroalloys, is based in Dnipropetrovsk and belongs to businessman and politician Victor Pinchuk.

The country’s most important businessmen are embedded in the east, where their businesses make disproportionately high contributions to the Ukrainian economy and national budget.
In the end, this proxy war between the East and the West has left Ukraine with a collapsed economy and on the brink of civil war.

And what has happened in Ukraine has caused permanent damage in the relationship between the United States and Russia.

It won't happen this month or even this year, but someday the U.S. may end up bitterly regretting antagonizing the Russian Bear.

At least that is what I think.

    So what do you think?

Russia May Be Preparing to Annex Crimea

Yanukovych, the deposed president of Ukraine, may be hiding out in Crimea

    Infowars.com
    February 24, 2014

According to Ukraine Liveblog Russian officials have arrived in Sevastopol on the Crimea peninsula and are preparing to issue passports.

The following translation appeared earlier today on the blog:
Russian State Duma deputies have arrived in Simferopol. The delegation is headed by Leonid Slutsky, head of the committee on the CIS. Russians promise to simply the issuance of passports to Crimeans.
Report summarizing their statements from Oleg Kryuchkov of censor.net.ua:
“Russia is starting to give out passports under a simplified procedure. Russia demands the fulfillment of the conditions of the agreements between the opposition and Yanukovych. And the main thing is that in the event of a decision of the Crimeans to have a referendum, or an appeal to the Supreme Council of the Crimea to Russia with a request to annex…Russia will review this question very quickly. Tsekov and Aksyonov mumbled, spoke about integrity and the Russian Word festival.”
This is a similar procedure the Russians initiated before the Georgia-Abkhazia conflict in 2008. Abkhazians received passports well ahead of Georgia’s invasion and Russia’s military response.

The Russian news outlet Izvestia reported military movement:
Four ships from the Russian town of Kubinka with a regiment of special troops are headed to Anapa.
From there within 4 hours they will reach Sevastopol at a speed of 10-15 knots, reports a source for Izvestiya in Ukraine.
According to the source, this movement is qualitative, and not quantitative. It is being observed from Ukraine. A depot for loading large tanker and infantry ships is located for dispatch to Sevastopol.
Crimea has signaled secession from Ukraine and possible annexation by Russia may be acceptable. The Guardian reported earlier today that a Russian flag was hoisted over the city hall in Sevastopol.
Rumors are rife that Viktor Yanukovych, the deposed president of Ukraine, may be hiding out in Crimea.

The last time an insurrectionary mood overcame Crimea was in 2008 when then president Viktor Yushchenko announced plans to evict the Russian fleet. Yushchenko was installed during the Rose Revolution fomented by the West. He was voted out of office and replaced with Yanukovych who was toppled by Euromaidan revolutionaries last week.

    Russia Sends Troops to Crimea

Russian official said his country will go to war over Crimea

The Russian Navy confirmed it has deployed Marines to Sevastopol in Crimea. Troops deployments began over the weekend.

It also confirmed that a large landing ship, the Nikolay Filchenkov, from the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation, sent Marines based in Temryuk, Russia. The Filchenkov also delivered ten BTR-80 armored personnel carriers, according to the naval website.

The weekend airlifts using four Ilyushin Il-76 strategic aircraft out an airbase in near Moscow delivered personnel from the 45th Airborne Special Forces to Anapa on the Black Sea, according to the report. Six Soviet-designed medium twin-turbine MI-8 transport helicopters were also sent.

The Black Sea Fleet stationed at Sevastopol includes various infantry, assault, artillery, reconnaissance and air defense battalions.

Interfax Ukraine reported antitank hedgehogs were placed at the Yalta highway in Sevastopol. A local newspaper explained the devices were placed in response to a spate of recent carjackings.

The unconfirmed video below allegedly shows troop movements in Ukraine.

During the upheaval in Kyiv last week, Russia quietly dispatched one of Putin’s leading advisers, Vladislav Surkov, to meet with Crimean leader Anatoly Mogilev, Crimean legislative Speaker Vladimir Konstantinov, and Sevastopol Governor Vladimir Yatsuboi. Meetings were also held in Moscow and included Sergei Naryshkin, the speaker of the State Duma.

On February 20, an unidentified Russian government official told the Financial Times Russia is willing to go to war over Crimea. “If Ukraine breaks apart, it will trigger a war,” the official said. “They will lose Crimea first [because] we will go in and protect [it], just as we did in Georgia.”

US and EU Waging “New Type of War” Against Russia

Russian general urges his government to wise up to the threat on its borders

Gen. Leonid Ivashov: US and EU threatening Russia with “a new type of war” that begins as informational and psychological operations. Photo: Axis for Peace

On February 5 a Russian news website, KM.ru, posted an interview with Gen. Leonid Ivashov, the former foreign relations head of the Russian Ministry of Defense and current president of the Academy of Geopolitical Studies. The interview was completely ignored by the corporate media in the United States and Europe due to its frank examination of the EuroMaidan revolution in Ukraine and the role played by Obama’s State Department and EU ministers in overthrowing the democratically elected government of President Viktor Yanukovych.
Ivashov said the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria represent “a new type of war” that begin as informational and psychological operations. EU officials and Secretary of State John Kerry, Ivashov said, “very conscientiously and scrupulously studied and continue to study the doctrine of Dr. Goebbels,” the Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it,” Goebbels said, expanding on Hitler’s definition of the Big Lie.
“I think our Foreign Ministry does not understand that there is a war, and the war has its own laws,” Ivashov explained. The new war has an “anti-Russian orientation,” but this is not fully understood by the Russian Foreign Ministry. If it was, Russia would present the facts “as they are” and the real agenda of the United States and the European Union would be exposed.
The Syrian and Ukraine interventions, Ivashov said, are controlled from Brussels, the headquarters of the EU. “They make plans, carry out a coordinating function, provide installation and finance. This is true for Syria, and with regard to Ukraine.”
Moreover, what Obama and Kerry have “encouraged in Kiev” – violent demonstrations where armed paramilitaries target police – would be “severely repressed” in the United States. “European leaders have dispersed unauthorized demonstrations using water cannons and demonstrators are imprisoned. But they hold the opposite position in the case of Ukraine.”
In the United States, for instance, the government conspired to undermine the non-violent Occupy Wall Street movement and went so far as to target leaders of the movement for assassination. The effort to demonize and attack the political opposition in the United States spans decades, most notably under the aegis of the FBI, America’s political police, and its COINTELPRO operation.
In addition to mobilizing demonstrations through “democracy” NGOs and agencies of the U.S. government, the United States placed warships in the Black Sea (under the pretense they would be used to provide security at the Sochi Olympic Games) and sent an influx of tanks to Germany prior to the orchestrated overthrow of Ukraine’s democratically elected government.
Moreover, the so-called EU “Association Agreement” ultimately rejected by Yanukovych and cited as a pretext igniting demonstrations in the Ukrainian capitol, was in fact a NATO Trojan Horse, not an economic remedy for the Ukrainian people.
“For NATO, the goal is expansion,” former Congressman Dennis Kucinich wrote last December, well before the engineered explosion removing Yanukovych from office. “The prize is access to a country that shares a 1,426-mile border with Russia. The geopolitical map would be dramatically reshaped by the Agreement, with Ukraine serving as the new front for Western missile defense at the doorstep of Russia.”
On February 5, Ivashov warned about the possibility NATO troops would be required to restore order. Due to the success of the coup and the speedy collapse of the government, however, this option was not required. Over the weekend, Ukraine’s new leaders promised to deliver the country into the hands of the IMF and unelected EU ministers.
The final stage in Ukraine will be an attempt to wrest Crimea away from Russia. On Sunday, Time magazine speculated the peninsula, overwhelmingly Russian in orientation, will ultimately appeal to Russia for protection, thus igniting a conflict similar to the one in South Ossetia in 2008. That short war was initiated by the U.S. puppet, Mikheil Saakashvili, who oversaw the murder of Russian peacekeepers in the autonomous Georgian Oblast that had declared independence in 1990. The conflict, as Paul Craig Roberts notes, was blamed on Russia by the corporate media despite the role played by Saakashvili.
The pattern, now increasingly understood by the Russians, is unmistakeable. The EuroMaidan revolution ushering in the predatory vulture economic policies of the financial elite operating out of the IMF and the totalitarian globalist agenda of the EU is a nuanced repeat of what went down in Saakashvili’s Georgia. Orchestrated out of the U.S.State Department by then ambassador to Georgia, Richard Miles, the so-called Rose Revolution in 2003 was a creature of the same forces at work in Ukraine – the National Endowment for Democracy, George Soros’ Open Society Georgia Foundation, and other subversive NGOs controlled by the globalists.

Soros Funded “Libyan Scenario” Now Unfolding in Ukraine

Libya suffered from an order out of chaos plan. A similar design on Russia’s frontier is now underway

    Kurt Nimmo
    Infowars.com
    February 22, 2014

Back in 2011 the Party of Regions warned that if left unchecked the globalist financier George Soros would unleash a “Libyan scenario” on Ukraine.

“I even have information that Soros has allocated certain funds in order to prepare a certain group of young boys here in Ukraine who could launch any existing projects based on the North Africa examples,” said Aleksandr Yefremov, head of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction.
A “certain group of young boys,” namely violent gun-toting hooligans from the Right Sector and associated neofascist groups, are reportedly in control of Kyiv as of Saturday. Members of 31st Hundred, an opposition group from Lviv, were said to be in control of Ukraine’s Parliament building, The New York Times reports, and the president, Viktor Yanukovych, has fled the capitol. Protesters have taken control of his home.
The United States and NATO supported mercenaries in Libya who overthrew the government and murdered its leader, Col. Muammar al-Gaddafi. Libya is now paralyzed by factional, regional, tribal and ideological divisions, a fate Ukraine now confronts as stores are looted, cash machines emptied, and a mass exodus departs the capitol for Odessa, Simferopol and Kharkov, Ukrainian cities largely loyal to the government and less affected by the turmoil, according to Russia Today.
In 2008 the now imprisoned former prime minister, Yulia Timoshenko, talked about the role George Soros played in Ukrainian politics and the advice he gave following the financial crisis.
“This raised suspicions that through such advice George Soros could influence the rate of the Ukrainian national currency in his own speculative interests. Several officials from president Yushchenko’s administration said they wanted to launch a probe into Soros’ Ukrainian activities, but it did not happen,” RT.com reported in 2011.
In 2010 the Ukrainian State Security Service began monitoring the activities of the Soros sponsored and funded Vozrozdeniye (“Renaissance”) foundation and its connection to other NGOs operating in the country. The investigation did not produce actionable results.
In response to the accusations leveled by Aleksandr Yefremov, the Soros Foundation “said in a special statement that all funds allocated for Ukrainian programs are being spent on the development of the open and democratic society and also for helping Ukrainian citizens, who suffered from the effects of the international financial crisis.”
In January we reported on the cynical attempt by Soros to undermine Ukraine and other nations in the Russian Federation. Soros’ Open Society Institute, now known as Open Society Foundations (OSF), doles out grants to activist NGOs in central Europe and builds upon and continues the work of the Ford Foundation. Since the early 1950s, the CIA has used the Ford Foundation as a funding cover. Soros and a handful of U.S. organizations such as the National Endowment for Democracy destabilize and overthrow governments, tasks formerly accomplished by the CIA.
The destabilization of the Ukrainian government is part of an ongoing geostrategic move by the globalists to undermine any challenge to their hegemonic designs. Libya suffered the result of what is essentially an order out of chaos plan. A similar plan on Russia’s frontier is now underway.

Domino Effect: Ukraine Neighbor Belarus May Be Next

Fossilized Soviet-era policies make Belarus a prime candidate for the next crisis

    Kurt Nimmo
    Infowars.com

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko Sunday made a point of stating that the Maidan revolution that has transformed Ukraine will not be a factor in Belarus.
“There will be no Maidan in Belarus,” Lukashenko said. He admitted that likewise tensions exist in his country and said it is the “sacred mission” of the Belarusian state to “preserve peace and stability in our land.”
Lukashenko vowed his government will “prevent even smallest indications of instability in our country. The neighboring Ukraine, which has become an arena for a clash between powerful internal and external forces, should be a lesson for us.”
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice characterized Belarus as the “last remaining true dictatorship in the heart of Europe.”
Lukashenko has imposed authoritarian control over the landlocked eastern European country since 1994. Belarus declared independence in 1990 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Despite widespread criticism in Europe, Lukashenko has maintained Soviet-era polices, including state ownership of the economy.
During anti-government demonstrations in 2011, Lukashenko vowed there would be “no color revolution” in Belarus like the ones in Serbia, Georgia, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan. He blamed outside influences and the internet-based Revolution Through Social Networks for the protests. Lukashenko said the government would respond violently to peaceful demonstrations challenging the state. Hundreds of activists from the online organization were arrested in Minsk. Journalists were also arrested and detained.

Following independence “Belarus’s history presents a long litany of laws restricting the country’s independent media, legislation hindering the work of NGOs, the expulsion of foreign diplomats and NGO workers for conspiring against the regime, and arrests at demonstrations protesting Lukashenka’s policies,” write Abel Polese and Donnacha Ó Beacháin (The Color Revolutions in the Former Soviet Republics).
On Independence Day 2011, the police used tear gas and batons against hundreds of Belarusians protesting against Lukashenko’s authoritarian rule.
Freedom House, the National Endowment for Democracy, and George Soros’ Open Society funded Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) attempted to gain the release Ales Bialiatski, a purported human rights activist who was sentenced to four years in prison.
Bialiatski was the vice president of FIDH, “making him anything but a ‘human rights defender’ and instead a coordinator of US-backed destabilization efforts that have been ongoing in the Eastern European nation for years,” writes researcher Tony Cartalucci.
“Several years back,” writes Andrrei Khrapavistski (The struggle for survival of independent newspapers and the role of new media during the 2006 Belarus presidential elections), “the International Research & Exchanges Board, the Soros Foundation, and the Independent Institute of Socio-Economic and Political Studies were forced by the Belarusian government to close their offices in Belarus, but some of them continue to function either from abroad or covertly within the country, providing some insight into the Belarusian conundrum.”

George Soros (/ˈsɔroʊs/ or /ˈsɔrəs/;[2] Hungarian: Soros György; Hungarian: [ˈʃoroʃ]; born August 12, 1930, as Schwartz György is a Hungarian-born American[3] business magnate,[4][5] investor, and philanthropist.[6] He is the chairman of Soros Fund Management. He is known as "The Man Who Broke the Bank of England" because of his short sale of US$10 billion worth of pounds, giving him a profit of $1 billion during the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crisis.

Soros was born in Budapest, Hungary, to a nonobservant Jewish family. His mother Elizabeth (also known as Erzsebet) came from a family that owned a thriving silk shop. His father Tivadar (also known as Teodoro) was a lawyer[12] and had been a prisoner of war during and after World War I until he escaped from Russia and rejoined his family in Budapest.[13][14] The two married in 1924. Tivadar was an Esperantist writer and taught Soros to speak Esperanto in his childhood.[15] Soros later said that he grew up in a Jewish home and that his parents were cautious with their religious roots.[16] Soros was thirteen years old in March 1944 when Nazi Germany occupied Hungary.[17] Soros took a job with the Jewish Council, which had been established during the Nazi occupation of Hungary. Soros later described this time to writer Michael Lewis:

    Soros is a well-known supporter of progressive-liberal political causes.[10]

Tymoshenko Promises to Deliver Ukraine to the Globalists

Plan to loot and further impoverish nation may now commence

    Kurt Nimmo
    Infowars.com
    February 23, 2014

On Saturday, oligarch, embezzler, murder suspect and former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko, released from a clinical hospital in the eastern industrial city of Kharkiv, told the Euromaidan revolutionaries in Kyviv’s Independence Square to stay the course.

“Do not leave Maidan as long as you have not obtained what you wanted,” she told the crowd. “Your fight for freedom will bring about democracy in other ex-Soviet republics.”
“This is a different Ukraine. This is a Ukraine of free people, and you have given this country to each and all of us, those who are living today and those who will live tomorrow. That is why people were on Maidan, who perished on Maidan will be heroes for ever,” she said.
As she traveled to Kyviv to embrace the revolution that claimed the lives of around 100 people and brought down the government of a corrupt Yanukovych and his confederates, Tymoshenko declared she is “sure that Ukraine will be a member of the European Union in the near future and this will change everything,” according to the Interfax news agency.
Saturday brought a slew of developments in the former Soviet republic. The dismissal on Friday of president Viktor Yanukovych was followed up by the sacking of Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara and Education Minister Dmytro Tabachnyk. Warrants were issued for the arrest of former Incomes Minister Oleksandr Klimenko and former Prosecutor-General Viktor Pshonka. Parliament named its former speaker, Oleksandr Turchynov, as interim president. Turchynov set a deadline of Tuesday to form a new government. Parliament also seized the impeached president’s luxury estate outside of Kyviv after protesters entered it on Saturday. Yanukovych has fled the city and is believed to be in Kharkiv. Rumors swirled over the weekend that his jet was denied permission to leave the country despite a statement by Yanukovych to the contrary.
“I have no intention to leave the country. I am not going to resign, I’m the legitimately elected president,” the fallen president said in a televised statement on Saturday. “Everything that is happening today is, to a greater degree, vandalism and banditry and a coup d’etat,” he said. “I will do everything to protect my country from breakup, to stop bloodshed.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told Secretary of State John Kerry by telephone the opposition has refused to follow a peace agreement signed last week. It was, he said, “sharply degraded by opposition forces’ inability or lack of desire” to respect it.
“Illegal extremist groups are refusing to disarm and in fact are taking Kyviv under their control with the connivance of opposition leaders,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov’s boss, Russian president Vladimir Putin, had previously urged the Obama administration to “use every opportunity to stop the illegal actions of radicals and return the situation to constitutional channels.”

The developments set the stage for the final dismemberment of Ukraine. It is speculated that the eastern, pro-Russian portion of the country will break away from the western part as it embraces the European Union. Southern Ukraine, in particular the Crimea, has strong ties to Russia. The region hosts a Russian naval base at Sevastopol. Politicians in the region have called for autonomy from Kyviv backed up by protection from Moscow.
Regardless of the west-east divide and calls by ultra-nationalists to keep Ukraine whole, serious economic problems continue to wrack the country and are driving it headlong into the hands of European Union apparatchiks and international bankers.
In December, Russia offered Ukraine $15 billion while political figures like Tymoshenko promised to deliver the country to the globalists at the EU. Now that the latter appears inevitable, the people of Ukraine can expect the suffer the fate of other poor and wanting junior partners of the globalist union – severe austerity and reduced living standards as the financial elite loot the country.
