Guatemalan Illegal Charged With Murder in Virginia Sanctuary County

An illegal alien from Guatemala has been charged with killing another man in a Virginia sanctuary jurisdiction.

The deadly assault unfolded on Aug. 4, but key details about the suspect were just released this week.
Elmer Castro, 32, was rushed to hospital from an undisclosed location by Fairfax County Fire and Rescue and treated for what was initially believed to be a fall associated with heavy intoxication, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) explained in a press release.

Castro’s health declined significantly and he passed away on Aug. 12.

Medical examiners ruled Castro’s death as suspicious and alerted FCPD.

During an ensuing investigation, detectives learned Castro had been assaulted by 39-year-old Elmar Waldemar Xitumul Vasquez on the day of his hospitalization.

On Sept. 5, Xitumul Vasquez was arrested near Annandale, VA, and charged with second-degree murder.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has now confirmed Xitumul Vasquez is a citizen of Guatemala who is illegally present in the U.S. and lodged a detainer against him with the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

“Xutumul also has previous charges for assault on a family member in 2012 and property damage in 2024. Xutumul entered the United States in 2007 at an unknown location and without admission by an immigration official,” ICE told immigration news outlet Border Hawk on Thursday.

“Fairfax County notoriously refuses to honor ICE immigration detainers and releases dangerous criminal aliens back into the communities of northern Virginia. As we have seen recently, there are dire consequences to releasing criminal alien offenders from custody, allowing them to reoffend and harm law abiding citizens.”

Investigators are still working to determine the sequence of events that led to the death of Castro, who did not have a known address in the U.S.
