Killer's visit leaves mark on rail town | Fannie Byers

    Summary:
    July 3, 2006

CARL, Ga. - Dozens of freight trains still pass through town every day, making most of the noise in this quiet Barrow County hamlet of about 250 people.

But eight years ago, a now-notorious serial killer who was in the country illegally arrived in town on a freight train.

Before he left, Angel Maturino Resendiz, a Mexican drifter dubbed the "Railroad Killer," murdered 81-year-old Fannie Byers, a crime that shook the close-knit community.

"It was scary living here," resident Patty Nocera remembers. "We don't have a police department, and we're supposed to be protected by the sheriff's department. That right there is scary in itself."
