Man killed in Coraopolis hit-and-run crash; suspect in ICE custody

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. — Surveillance video captured the moment a man was killed in a hit-and-run crash near a gas station.

The man was hit and killed late Sunday night while crossing 4th Avenue in Coraopolis.

“He used to stand in the corner over by the front door every morning, and say ‘Good morning! Good morning.’ He was just the sweetest guy,” Carole Thompkins told Channel 11.

Thompkins works behind the desk at the Citgo on 4th Avenue in Coraopolis, and is talking about the man who was hit and killed by a car last night — a man who she considers a “regular.”

Surveillance video from the gas station shows him being hit by a black SUV, dragged along the road, and killed.

Because of how graphic the video is, Channel 11 has paused it just before the moment of impact.

“The video made me sick to my stomach. That was the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s horrible,” Thompkins said.

Investigators say the driver never stopped. Through license plate readers, detectives found him at a home in Ambridge.

Detectives discovered he is an undocumented immigrant. He is now in ICE custody.

“So now what, he’s going to be deported and get to live his life? Where our friend can’t live his life anymore. He’s gone,” Thompkins said.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Ulises Montalvo, 61, of Coraopolis.

Channel 11 also spoke with the Montalvo’s neighbors, who bonded with him over their Puerto Rican descent.

“We had a flag and he would yell out ‘boricua!’ And that’s how we knew he was Puerto Rican as well. And whenever you would see him, he’d have his Spanish music playing on his phone. And he was just in his own little world,” Noel Saez told Channel 11.

Nearly 24 hours later, they’re shocked he’s gone.

“A few regrets. Didn’t say stop to say hi on another day or something to that extent. Now the opportunity is lost,” Saez added.

The driver has not been charged yet, but is in ICE custody.
